Also, if you haven't, Prey (2017) is the final song of that genre and probably the best of them.
Re:Deus Ex by mjr00 on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:20AM (#50394388)
Prey is extremely good, but boy did I hate the ending. It's not just a disappointing ending, it's one that retroactively cheapens the rest of the game, IMO. Still a great game and worth playing, but that ending will always leave a bitter taste in my mouth.
Re:Deus Ex by paulryanrogers on Friday November 06, 2026 @06:28PM (#50399920)
Agreed. I try to focus on what I enjoyed and imagine my own head-cannon ending.
Re:Deus Ex by satvikpendem on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:40AM (#50394707)
The Mooncrash DLC specifically is one of the best pieces of gaming available. It turns the base game mechanics into a Rogue-like where the world resets but some things in the world still stay persistent.
Re:Deus Ex by izacus on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:47AM (#50394814)
While I like that DLC, I think it loses what makes these games so great to play: the feeling of exploration and slowly uncovering a story. Moon crashes repetition and time limits don't quite do it for me (although I still really recommend it to anyone).
Re:Deus Ex by thor-rodrigues on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:52AM (#50394881)
Absolutely agree. Prey is stunning puzzle sandbox and I love so much the atmosphere of the game, from both the artistic and environment design perspective, but also from the outstanding ambiance soundtrack by Mick Gordon.

Unfortunately I have the impression that the final part was rushed, as the story feels incomplete at best. I wish Arkane could dedicate 6 more months to this game.

I've been out of the gaming scene for a while; will the iGPU on my Ryzen 7 9700X be able to handle a 9 year old game?
Re:Deus Ex by load-bearing on Friday November 06, 2026 @12:26PM (#50395392)
Until you get a better response, here's my experience: my 7700 gets stable 60 fps in gta5 at 1080p on medium-low. Haven't tried anything more modern, I'm addicted to ancient stuff.

I tried it out: Smooth on Low setting, playable on Medium nausea inducing on High.
Re:Deus Ex by ceuk on Friday November 06, 2026 @12:52PM (#50395753)
I picked it up a few months ago for the first time but I've not found the enthusiasm to keep going. Think I was around half way maybe. Does it get better? It's the sort of game I really like on paper but it just feels a bit shallow tbh. Plus I don't find jump scares relaxing after a long day at work. Feels like I'm missing something
Re:Deus Ex by peezd on Friday November 06, 2026 @01:59PM (#50396749)
Honestly doesn't get a ton better, but your character gets stronger and more able to deal with the enemies so they become less of a concern and can explore with a bit more freedom
Re:Deus Ex by giobox on Friday November 06, 2026 @12:54PM (#50395787)
If you love Deus Ex, I think the Dishonored games carried the flag for this kind of game too. Harvey Smith, lead designer on Deus Ex, was heavily involved in making them and while the setting is completely different (magic, steampunk-ish), the “feel” of the games owes a huge amount to Deus Ex.

Re:Deus Ex by izacus on Friday November 06, 2026 @01:25PM (#50396233)
Agreed, the Dishonored series was great as well.
Re:Deus Ex by jasomill on Friday November 06, 2026 @03:11PM (#50397752)
Also the System Shock and BioShock series.
Re:Deus Ex by giobox on Friday November 06, 2026 @03:13PM (#50397781)
Agreed on the System Shock, and of course if we are talking about Looking Glass games you have to mention the Thief influence.

Bioshock has never been in the same category for me, because it is very focused on run and gun combat, for this reason I’ve never felt it worked as an “immersive sim”. The levels aren’t nearly as open plan either. It’s still great in its own right of course.

Re:Deus Ex by aidenn0 on Friday November 06, 2026 @01:41PM (#50396483)
I just checked, and it's available now for $8 with mooncrash or $5 without at gog.com
Re:Deus Ex by jasomill on Friday November 06, 2026 @03:13PM (#50397778)
It's impossible to speak highly enough of this game.
Re:Deus Ex by FuriouslyAdrift on Friday November 06, 2026 @03:20PM (#50397893)
Only thing that bugged me about Prey is it felt like it was "on rails" and I couldn't just explore. The game is huge and gorgeous...

One of the few modern games that actually got me tense and scared. It is a really good game.

Re:Deus Ex by spopejoy on Saturday November 07, 2026 @08:05PM (#50409593)
> final song

I mean there's deathloop ... not saying it's anywhere near as good.

It does seem like immersive sim is gone, but it feels like it's influence lives on in BG3 and Elden Ring. The best games these days try hard to hide the rails.

Re:Deus Ex by shmerl on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:17AM (#50394333)
I played it for the first time using Deus Ex: Revision. It's very good.
Re:Deus Ex by account42 on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:23AM (#50394442)
I would suggest anyone playing it for the first time to give the original with only basic engine fixes (e.g. Deus EXE) a go before playing some random modders take on what the game should be like.
Re:Deus Ex by shmerl on Friday November 06, 2026 @12:07PM (#50395101)
If you have a lot of free time, may be. The game is pretty long. I enjoyed Revision though, so nothing to complain about.
Re:Deus Ex by onli on Friday November 06, 2026 @03:30PM (#50398048)
You played a worse version. Revision butchers a few levels, especially the NYC section - bigger in scale without a good reason for it, making it impossible to find key persons organically (with also the hints not working anymore).
Re:Deus Ex by anthk on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:25AM (#50394464)
Revision sucked as it had crappy textures on Hong Kong. GMDX it's far ahead, less tacky/broken and with hugely enhanced areas. As early as at Hell's Kitchen you are looking a much more realistic area (city planning, buildings, park benches/objects and whatnot) than before.

Re:Deus Ex by giobox on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:25AM (#50394459)
Genuinely curious if this ever ships. It was meant to release in January this year, but the devs pulled the launch after it got a terrible reception from fans.

What has been shown so far looks worse than many of the free modded versions out there, and with AI lowering the bar for modifying games every week… As an experiment I asked Claude to take the source code from the browser port of the game that appeared on GitHub recently, add coop multiplayer and as much of the graphical enhancements from the remaster video.

It took about 4 prompts, and I have builds playable on Linux, MacOS and Windows, with coop. Gets well over 300fps on my Mac Mini as uses metal on an a Mac.

Re:Deus Ex by komali2 on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:36AM (#50394648)
Nightdive studio will be fine with their Sony and Nintendo devkits and arrangements with them, store access, publishing deals etc. They'll just use the same AI tools to get things done faster, presumably.
Re:Deus Ex by rjh29 on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:38AM (#50394687)
The studio will be fine. They'll use AI but it won't be a buggy vibe coded mess; they'll actually test it and refine it. That's the hard part.

Re:Deus Ex by AlexandrB on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:46AM (#50394777)
A lot of modern remakes become "demakes". Often a remake focuses on surface level improvements, like graphics, but damages the underlying game systems that made the original beloved in the first place. Another common problem is lazy graphics upscaling that improves the resolution but makes the result look cheap or incongruous with the game's original style (GTA3 remastered is a great example[1]). I think there are a handful of truly great remakes a bunch of mediocre ones and a surprising number of total disasters like Warcraft 3.

But probably the worst trend with modern remakes is taking the original games off of online stores or "upgrading" them to the remake thus making the original unavailable. Combined with the "demakes" trend above and it seems like we're actively destroying many historical games with these "remakes".

Re:Deus Ex by load-bearing on Friday November 06, 2026 @12:24PM (#50395358)
I spent hundreds of hours in the game, if not thousands, over the decades. Your best pick would probably be gmdx as it fixes many bugs and annoyances of the original, improves graphics a lot, while staying very close to it.

Revision is popular and cute, but changes too much. Level design on some levels is so different that you can't recognize them, I still get lost despite playing though it at least ten times, as original levels are burned in my memory.

Although this can be changed in settings, I'd still avoid Revision unless you want to have another go at it after finishing the original.

Re:Deus Ex by paulryanrogers on Friday November 06, 2026 @09:04PM (#50400954)
Age helps when revisiting old games. I bounced off several that now I enjoy much more as an older person.

My last replay was with GMDX and it felt faithful to the vision of the original, with fewer rough edges.

Hoping the remaster can deliver some further refinement and optional enhancements.

Re:Deus Ex by glenstein on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:08AM (#50394200)
I had a subscription to PC Gamer and saw it was named Game of the Year. I got it from Wal Mart, a beautiful shiny box, and inside was a fake newsletter about events in the game world, I think the paper that Joe Greene, an in-game character, wrote for.

I had no idea what I was in for, and as a 15 year old, I felt twists and surprises, and organic game reactions to things I did that blow my mind even today, and imo still haven't been matched. And leveling and skills truly mattered and were tied into the game. Inventory management and ammo was interesting, the interface was perfect. It also had a kind of intellectual curiosity in the dialog that I only ever felt in, say, Alpha Centauri and later, Disco Elysium. It's still the best PC game ever imo.

Re:Deus Ex by piltdownman on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:15AM (#50394297)
It probably kicked off a minor G.K. Chesterton revival as well. 90s Cyberpunk viewed through post-graduate Philosophy amidst the transition of cyberpunk to eCapitalism, all tied together with cinematic sensibilities and a phenomenally realised OST.

Now if only someone could make a game aping 'The Difference Engine' in the style of Dishonoured... the time is right for a steampunk equivalent!

Re:Deus Ex by anthk on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:23AM (#50394443)
I've got it for ~5 eur (~$5) back in the day with a gaming magazine in Spain in 2003/2004, I can't remember. Dirt cheap and amazing game running really well on my Athlon with a Geforce2 MX.

Now with GMDX it's a must play.

Re:Deus Ex by LarsDu88 on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:40AM (#50394712)
On my last replay the game's politics read to me as hyper libertarian. Very anti-UN, anti globalism. Right up Alex Jones' territory

When the game came out though the politics around conspiracy theories was very different. Deus Ex tried to cram in every conspiracy theory circulating at the time. MJ-12, the trilateral commission, Roswell...

Re:Deus Ex by glenstein on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:52AM (#50394877)
I wouldn't say it was anti-UN per se. The UN just happened to be the vehicle that bad guys used. It was ramping up an extrajudicial military force, coordinating with rich elites in the shadows and spreading a plague for political leverage that was the bad stuff.

The good guys were trying to coordinate and make sure vaccine was widely distributed, and IIRC the original friends of the main character continue to believe in the value of UNATCO (the agency you work for in the game) and treat it like a good cause that was poisoned rather than a philosophical error.

I can see the libertarian bent, but with the very heavy qualifier that it's like Noam Chomsky 90s anarcho libertarianism than the joke that is today's fascist-friendly memeified online libertarianism. I doubt Tracer Tong and Alex Jones would have much in common if they tried to have a conversation. And it does give you three choices at the end of the day, and seems to mean it, though if you squint I suspect it's most sympathetic to Tracer Tong's preferred outcome.

Re:Deus Ex by vinceguidry on Friday November 06, 2026 @01:45PM (#50396544)
The article, (not that anyone ever seems to read it before commenting) does dive into the game's politics and comes to the conclusion you mention, right down to the Alex Jones comparison. It also has this to say:

> Lurking in the accusations against “wealthy bankers” is the oldest, ugliest conspiratorial trope of all, the idea — stemming from the 1903 forgery “The Protocol of the Elders of Zion” — that a cabal of Jews secretly run the world. “Famous conspiracy theories always turn out to be just antisemitism,” this website’s regular commenter Ross theorized after reading a piece I wrote about the thoroughly unpleasant Pierre Plantard, the man behind some of the most outlandish tales surrounding the French village of Rennes-le-Château. The more conspiracy theories I examine in depth, the more true this proposition seems.

While true, in 2026 if you're conflating antisemitism with anti-Zionism, you're part of the problem.

Re:Deus Ex by jamesu on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:14AM (#50394289)

Re:Deus Ex by lopsotronic on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:37AM (#50394663)
While most of the country was all Glass Em! post-9/11, a few of us were sort of amazed that it took so long.

It wasn't just misanthropy on our part.

Zooming out, macrohistorically[1], the amount of destruction that can be controlled by the individual soldier has increased, steadily at first, then exponentially in the modern era. Obviously the extreme example would be something like SADM[2], but this increase also includes the multiplying complex systems of the modern world - bulk ammunition, heavy vehicles, commercial aircraft. As the numbers needed for X level of destruction decreases, the span of viable ideologies increases; it's easier to convince 12 guys of nutty ideas than it is to convince 12,000. So, in the big view, the idea of big cultural icons getting flattened, this is something scifi has been kicking around for a while now. One could argue it's a significant pillar of "cyberpunk" worldbuilding: the persistent presence of the "crazies" wielding the modern tools of fuel, bullets, and nuclear bombs.

[1] Which is definitely the perspective of the Deus Ex creative team.

"There's a tendency among the press to attribute the creation of a game to a single person," says Warren Spector, creator of Thief and Deus Ex.

Re:Deus Ex by smallmancontrov on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:17AM (#50394342)
The journalist understood the assignment!
Re:Deus Ex by deadbabe on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:44AM (#50394756)
This goes beyond just the press really.

The myth of the solo creator who heroically makes something amazing has a romantic appeal to a lot of people, especially those who dream of doing such a thing themselves someday. In truth, all great things in history have many collaborators and what we think of as the “creator” is often just a person who played the role of bringing together the collaborators, with perhaps a few other direct contributions.

But in the AI era, this solo-creator myth can now become reality, or if you are more cynical, just an even deeper delusion that exploits the non-consensual labor of millions for one’s personal benefit.

The Morpheus' quoted text is also nonsense. It was hardly the judgement that kept individuals together and led to civilization building. This kind of logic may seem plausible only to an individual of nowadays' condition, to whom the covered basic needs faded out of attention. The basic needs (with the need for security at the center of them all) was sufficient reason for group cohesion, time and time again.

Re:Deus Ex by shepherdjerred on Saturday November 07, 2026 @12:55AM (#50402035)
I think the iPod is also fair to attribute to him.

My understanding is that he often came up with ideas for products and 'forced' engineers to find a way to make it possible. He wasn't very technical, but in a way that was a strength.

Re:Deus Ex by ahartmetz on Saturday November 07, 2026 @04:18AM (#50402961)
IMO, the iPod wasn't that much better than other MP3 players.

Re:Deus Ex by Lerc on Saturday November 07, 2026 @04:59PM (#50408439)
Job's contribution was having the vision to let the engineers make the things they felt they could make if given the support.

That's why iPhone clones turned up almost immediately. Management said to their devs, ok now Apple has done it, you can make that thing you've been wanting to make for ages. The capability was there, what was missing was the belief that something better was possible and needed.

Re:Deus Ex by bigstrat2003 on Friday November 06, 2026 @09:10PM (#50400981)
I've never understood why people give Jobs so much credit. He didn't make anything. He was a salesman. Now, as a salesman, he was phenomenal, one of the best in history. But without the engineers who actually made things, he would've been nothing.
Re:Deus Ex by satvikpendem on Saturday November 07, 2026 @12:33AM (#50401933)
The engineers wouldn't have made world changing products without his guidance. There are many books about this, even by the employees themselves such as Creative Selection and Insanely Simple, which talk about how Jobs' product vision simplified much of the UI and UX and therefore product for regular users when engineers instead wanted to add more features and complexify the product. Steve was not just a salesman handed a product and asked to sell it.
Re:Deus Ex by homarp on Saturday November 07, 2026 @02:18AM (#50402389)
Steve Jobs said no. No to 'stupid' ideas and no to 'cannot be done'. That leads to some products being bad (eg mac cube) and other to be interesting to build on (iphone with no app SDK).
Re:Deus Ex by moomin on Friday November 06, 2026 @02:24PM (#50397109)
Indeed, the narrative here, which is the commonly recited version, does exactly this, and so fails to explain why Deus Ex 2 didn’t hit nearly as hard.
Re:Deus Ex by stego-tech on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:19AM (#50394373)
Remains one of my favorite games ever, even as current events make it difficult to return to at present (it used to be a yearly replay over my winter holidays).

One thing strikes me however, as perhaps revealing my own naïveté:

> Lurking in the accusations against “wealthy bankers” is the oldest, ugliest conspiratorial trope of all, the idea — stemming from the 1903 forgery “The Protocol of the Elders of Zion” — that a cabal of Jews secretly run the world.

I never made that connection until literally reading this piece. Bankers weren’t all Jews, and not all Jews were Bankers. I had heard the stereotype, sure, but I never read said stereotype into such conspiracies or narratives. It just made logical sense that a newly-emerged global society formed around currency and trade would be manipulated by those people who specialize in said sectors, i.e. bankers and financiers. The fact said individuals continue having outsized import on daily news and current events almost cements the plot point as real prophecy instead of antisemitic nonsense, but I can also see how bad actors would tie hate speech to current events to boost their own platforms.

Just an odd bit of reflecting, is all.

Re:Deus Ex by kakacik on Friday November 06, 2026 @12:18PM (#50395283)
Old boogeymen in bankers became faang owners in real life some 10-15 years ago and almost nobody complained. Now its ai companies owners.

Compared to those, all bankers of the world even combined are still a minor insignificant player. I wonder if we will ever see 'occupy sillicon valley' movement?

Re:Deus Ex by bigstrat2003 on Friday November 06, 2026 @01:13PM (#50396058)
> One thing strikes me however, as perhaps revealing my own naïveté...

On the contrary: whenever I see someone accuse a work of antisemitism because it has greedy bankers, I think that says a lot more about the accuser than it does the work in question. It is not normal to look at a fictional banker sect and assume that they are meant to be Jews, or a reflection on Jews.

Re:Deus Ex by AngryData on Friday November 06, 2026 @03:17PM (#50397838)
Yeah, most of the "antisemetic" crap people claim I don't associate with jewish people at all.
Re:Deus Ex by morsch on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:20AM (#50394396)
There's a lot to cover with the game, so I'm not surprised he doesn't cover the music. But the soundtrack is great! I still listen to it regularly. I like the UNATCO music best. Each track has a regular theme, and switches to variations on the theme for combat and other situations. Pretty unusual in 2000 and even today.
Re:Deus Ex by filoleg on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:37AM (#50394673)
UNATCO theme is absolutely legendary. I actually got chills during the surprise post-credits scene in Deus Ex: Human Revolution when the theme started playing.

Re:Deus Ex by glenstein on Friday November 06, 2026 @12:23PM (#50395352)
Same for the DX:HR game that weaves the song in! Before the shine wore off as you play through the whole game.
Re:Deus Ex by filoleg on Friday November 06, 2026 @01:13PM (#50396070)
100%. DX:HR soundtrack was very much fitting the game, and tracks built upon variations of the tracks from the original DX worked so well there. The aesthetic was perfect as well.

Shame what happened to the series after DX:HR (with Mankind Divided feeling rather unfinished and ending on an abrupt cliffhanger with no follow-up on the horizon, despite the game itself being great otherwise). But at least we got some really good crumbs (HR and MD) out of it, and I am very much thankful for that.

Re:Deus Ex by zelphirkalt on Friday November 06, 2026 @01:56PM (#50396703)
I felt like MD was kinda the refined version of HR. Most things felt just a little bit improved, polished. Story was great, but I very much want to know what's next and I don't know, if we will ever get another great one in the series.
Re:Deus Ex by tadfisher on Friday November 06, 2026 @05:16PM (#50399230)
It's funny, I appreciate DX and HR because they are still obviously video games at their core, jank and affordances galore. MD just felt like they wanted to go all in on realism and inverse-kinematics and cover mechanics and such so it felt like any other hyper-realistic modern shooter.

I loved the gold filter for HR, for another example. I know I am probably in the minority.

Hong Kong Streets FTW! I remember having it on a playlist with my kids in the car.

I loved the theme changes on them -- I remember HK Streets had explore, combat and death scene; transitions felt seamless in the game.

Re:Deus Ex by glenstein on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:59AM (#50394975)
Goodness, the introduction to Hong Kong and the music cast a new vibe on the game at a perfectly timed moment, when you've just about had enough of NYC. And it was seeded with all these little scripted moments you could happen upon. Talks in tea shops, gang fights in tunnels, overhearing convos in bars, the little newspaper boy who relayed threats to a newsstand vendor and leads you to a gang HQ if you follow him.

And the discoverability of all kinds of stuff in the canals. The cityscape building hopping, it had everything. You truly felt like you were discovering every inch of it and like it wasn't just on rails or procedurally generated.

Re:Deus Ex by zelphirkalt on Friday November 06, 2026 @01:45PM (#50396545)
Unatco and HK, of course, but much later while giving each track another more complete hearing, I discovered one of the NYC streets tracks has a long time building up, like >1min, and then gets really great too. And I love how in later Deus Ex parts random radios throughout the levels will start playing familiar tunes. Makes it all more epic and nostalgic.

If I am remembering correctly, I felt terrible after completing the first mission but that may have been the point - make you think about what you are doing. It was presented to the player as authentic threat, then when you get to end you are told it was a test but in my playthrough I killed all the “bad guys” on the way, and could have spared their virtual lives by sneaking around and knocking them out.

Postal 2 can be played through without ever hitting anyone, which I've done for fun. Although it's the exact opposite of what you're supposed to do there, which is the joke.

Haven't been able to repeat that in Deus Ex, you can't play through the campaign as a total pacifist, and Carter explains as much right at the beginning.

Sure, I've done at least a dozen of less-violent runs (being addicted to this game and a couple of others), but you still can't get though it without ever killing anyone, at least not without hacks exploiting NPC pathfinding bugs, and the game still treats characters like Anna as dead even if you work around it.

100% of regular NPCs can be spared IIRC.

Re:Deus Ex by none_to_remain on Friday November 06, 2026 @07:49PM (#50400522)
One of Deus Ex's main flaws in my book is that they didn't really keep up with this after that first mission - you still have the choice to be lethal or non-lethal, but I don't recall the game really reacting to the choice later on.
Re:Deus Ex by erhangundogan on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:32AM (#50394577)
If I am not mistaken Deus Ex had one of the first non-linear gameplay with different story entries and exits. That feature itself was very interesting and unique. Apart from that cyberpunk rpg design was attractive. All in all it was an epic game and It is a game which is memorable for lifetime. Thanks to Ion Storm one more time.
Re:Deus Ex by LarsDu88 on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:35AM (#50394637)
Still my favorite game of all time. The difficulty scaling was absolutely ridiculous though. In the first level, you're supposed to be a cyber augmented super soldier, but in the first level, they give you like 2 magazines for your pistol, and if you don't max our your small weapon skill, you have worse aim than a toddler with a nerf gun.

The gameplay and graphics don't hold up but the story was absolutely prescient around AI, billionaire oligarchs, and mass surveillance.

Re:Deus Ex by bsimpson on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:38AM (#50394690)
Deus Ex and Alice were both games I wanted to play when I was in high school, but they didn't have Mac ports.

I tried playing Alice a couple times when I got Steam in 2023, and I couldn't get into it. Made it about halfway through Half Life on a long flight, and same.

It's wild how games that were considered state-of-the-art when we were kids can feel unplayably unpolished today.

Re:Deus Ex by bee_rider on Friday November 06, 2026 @11:49AM (#50394839)
It is funny to go back and play some classics like that.

IIRC Quake “a” and “d” to… turn, instead of strafe, by default. Absolute madness. Can be played without a mouse I think(?).

On the other hand, it is still very cool that you can get the bad guys to fight each other sometimes. That should be a feature in every game really.

Re:Deus Ex by giobox on Friday November 06, 2026 @08:57PM (#50400904)
Deus Ex absolutely had an official Mac port at the time! It worked on OS 9 as well as Classic mode in early OS X. Came out a month or so after the PC version in 2000.

I've still got an old G4 tower with a working install.

I was also completely blown away by something I only discovered years after playing the game when the sequel landed.

There's a portion in the game when your brother Paul is sick and he tells you to leave him to fight off enemy goons alone. Apparently you can fight your way through the hotel and he survives all the way to the end of the game!

Re:Deus Ex by deburo on Friday November 06, 2026 @12:27PM (#50395399)
Haha, nice. Which reminds me of my first playthrough as well, and I was very much on-rails brained (just do what the game tells you to do, because most games give you barely any agency). In the plane where Anna goes to kill Lebedev, for whatever reason I tried killing her, and after a few tries, I ended up LAM'ing her and I was confused that the game continued afterward.
Re:Deus Ex by mickeyp on Friday November 06, 2026 @12:47PM (#50395674)
Indeed he does. There are many of these hidden things.

You can kill Anna on the plane where you're supposed to kill Lebedev; the game accounts for this with voice dialogue and everything. Crazy. At that point in the game there is no reason for you to even try (and she's a tough match) unlike later on --- but you can!

Re:Deus Ex by load-bearing on Friday November 06, 2026 @02:22PM (#50397076)

Re:Deus Ex by jasomill on Friday November 06, 2026 @03:33PM (#50398081)
Fallout: New Vegas wins the award for allowing you to kill seemingly plot-essential NPCs. As far as I know, there are only two characters in the entire game you can interact with face-to-face that can't be killed, both robots. One is a vendor, so you always have at least one shop, the other is the head of a faction that allows you to complete the game even after alienating (or killing) all the other factions.
Re:Deus Ex by iaaan on Friday November 06, 2026 @12:59PM (#50395855)
The game implements this in a funny, low-tech way: you enter through Paul's window, and if you exit back through his window, the game treats it as though you've chosen to abandon him, so he dies. In order for him to survive, all you have to do is exit through the front door of the hotel before he is killed by any enemies, which you can do by running as fast as you can past all the enemies.
Re:Deus Ex by LarsDu88 on Friday November 06, 2026 @01:17PM (#50396124)
In my replays I just line the front door with LAMs so as soon as the goons enter they blow up. Then it's a massive shooting gallery all the way down. You can also use your leg augmentations to jump down the elevator shaft, and sneak your way to the front door.

The issue with this is that the game doesn't really communicate this fact to you, and not killing the goons technically should mean that they're still going to go upstairs at some point and kill Paul.

The most hilarious part of this is that Paul himself says he's too weak to climb through the window, but as soon as those goons bust in through the front door, he whips out a 50 lb flame thrower and starts strafing around at 30 mph like he's in the motherfucking murder olympics.

I remember playing it again and again as a teenager, each time finding something new, some shaft I hadn't explored or a character in some side street I hadn't talked to. I must have played through 15+ times.

One thing to remember is how quick it would be to build out maps in that era, big blocks to carve out the space and align/scale a single diffuse texture on each face.

I recall some anecdote from Harvey Smith that he liked to start the day earlier than the rest of the studio, and he could do a 'first draft' of a level before anyone arrived. I believe the example was the 'Ton hotel, which is a small map.

> Still, I do understand why it was done this way, and don’t really blame anyone for it: because truly interactive storytelling, especially on a scale like this one, is hard, as decades of experience have taught us all too well.

The Stanley Parable is an exploration of the fact that this sort of "interactive storytelling" is largely impossible. It's not a coincidence that it was made as a mod for Half-Life 2 (and then as a Source game). The different paths represent different attempts by the game designer or the player to either fix or cope with the failure of the game as the Narrator originally envisioned it.

Any mention of the original Deus Ex requires mention this old "walkthrough" by DOUG the Eagle called Sunglasses at Night:

For those who have never played Deus Ex, I'm actually going to do the heretical thing and propose that you start with Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Director's Cut).

It's an amazing game in its own right and holds up really well today. The problem with hopping directly into Deus Ex is that it's really showing its age these days, even with mods.

DX:HR is a prequel, so from a timeline perspective it makes sense to play it first :)

Re:Deus Ex by laidoffamazon on Friday November 06, 2026 @06:00PM (#50399655)
The story/dialogue in HR can’t hold a candle to the original though. Gameplay wise they did otherwise keep getting better with time and technology. MD is a masterpiece as far as open world immersive sims go - but the story is shallow and designed to be as uncontroversial as possible.

Warren Spector? Why do I always associate that name with the name of one of the characters?
Re:Deus Ex by cubefox on Friday November 06, 2026 @01:14PM (#50396078)
I always wondered why the game was called "Deus Ex". "Deus ex machina" is the "God from the machine", in a play someone who is magically lowered down from the sky via a theater contraption to save the day. "Deus ex" alone just means "God from". What does that mean? I guess I have to play the game to find out...
Re:Deus Ex by Archer6621 on Friday November 06, 2026 @03:12PM (#50397769)
I always interpreted it as "From god", as a jab at those who think they are godly, or perhaps can play god themselves, which is a common theme throughout the game.
Re:Deus Ex by cubefox on Saturday November 07, 2026 @04:14AM (#50402943)
But it means "god from", not "from god"...

Re:Deus Ex by iammrpayments on Friday November 06, 2026 @01:46PM (#50396555)
This game is so good that when I first played I couldn’t speak english and thought it was just a fun first person shooter.

Some years later I learned some english and found out the game is deep with layers, and the more I play the more I learn something new.

loved this game so much back in the day despite its ckunkyness at times. 2 felt cool still and later the whole atmosphere for me was lost. Still recognise and recall fondly a lot of the game many years later. ion storm, the intro music, dialogues.

great example in my mind of that games dont need to be perfect to be released or very memorable.

good writing is essential in my mind, dialogues and music / atmosphere. maybe its personal taste.

thanks for the lovely blog and memories :) totally makes me wanna go and replay them!

Best game of all time.

I have the logo tattooed on myself (along with Babylon 5). First played it around 16 pre-spoiler-filled internet and was blown away by my friend and I having completely different outcomes to pivotal moments of the game related to Paul Denton (no spoilers: if you know, you know).

Never worked in games (bar a bit of voice acting in The Nameless Mod for Deus Ex) but I think were it not for that era of gaming I’d never have ended up working on Homebrew or at GitHub.

Sadly the graphics have not aged well but if you can handle them: the writing and non-linear/branching plot and dialogue is still probably second to none.

Re:Deus Ex by hoppp on Friday November 06, 2026 @02:25PM (#50397111)
My favorite game too. I'm fine with the old graphics. Anything new would probably butcher it. There is a remake that replaces the engine but keeps the models, it was posted here a while ago.

Re:Deus Ex by Glyptodon on Friday November 06, 2026 @03:28PM (#50398008)
Like many games, I think people's ratings of importance and quality are highly colored by their own experiences. For example, Goldeneye is beloved, but I've always found it weird, and I think anyone who played multiplayer Quake, Descent, Doom, etc., before it came out will just never see it as the revelation that console gamers do. Similarly, if you played Marathon games, Halo never seems nearly as special as many gamers find it.

With Deus Ex, I think one factor that really boosts it is that very few games previous to it focused nearly as much on experiencing a story while giving a first person player agency of any degree, and this is probably doubly true for the kind of audience that would find a first person real-time experience appealing, or at least I imagine the audiences for Fallout and Planescape: Torment and such, while overlapping some, weren't really quite the same audience as for Deus Ex, and stuff like Lucas Film's Maniac Mansion style games (puzzle narrative games?) are even further removed. While other games that are obviously similar in some ways, like Half Life, are much much more on rails in terms of both player experience and narrative compared to Deus Ex.

I think it's a great game, just like the X-Files was a great show, but also just like X-Files was not a perfect show. (Though I'm not sure there's a strict analog to the degree of unnecessary continuation X-Files has had.) By the standard of its time, just being first person and having varied endings, varied routes, and a lot of narrative support are all big winners for its time.

Having played all those games before GoldenEye, I still thought GE was groundbreaking and raised the bar for both PCs and consoles. My guess is it's harder for those who came after to go appreciate it. Or really anyone who needs stable, high frame rates. Because GE's low frame rate is probably its biggest flaw.

All I can say is archives, pistols only, 4 controllers and some friends.
Re:Deus Ex by Glyptodon on Saturday November 07, 2026 @03:47PM (#50407897)
In your view what about it did? Having played multi-player PC shooters like Quake first, the friend experience of living room sharing the screen was great, but not that game specific - it's part of why makes Mario Cart type games so enduring. But the effective quarter resolution on a CRT always making my eyes bleed even after just 15 minutes + te much worse controls (compared to keyboard + ball or mouse) always made me feel like it was just drastically more miserable than Quake on PC.
Re:Deus Ex by paulryanrogers on Saturday November 07, 2026 @09:50PM (#50410028)
GoldenEye had better graphics, big levels, lots of detail (for the era), realistic (mo cap) animation, blood stains where you struck an opponent, could shoot the hat off someone, higher tick rates than most PC multiplayer, an interesting story with intriguing set pieces (mostly), and multiplayer options galore (unmatched until Unreal's mutators).

Screen sharing and low frame rates were all I can recall disliking. And the former could be solved with some cardboard ;). Nowadays you can play emulated or decompiled with high resolution and high frame rates. The models may not hold up as well, while most everything else is great.

> The most infamous and chilling “proof” of Deus Ex’s alleged facility for predicting the future is a view of the New York City skyline that you can see in the very first mission. This game that was released fifteen months before the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, nonetheless shows only empty sky where the twin towers of the World Trade Center ought to be. As the people who made the game have always been quick to explain, this was not intended as a conscious statement of any sort, much less a prophecy. The towers were left out simply because the rendering engine couldn’t handle any more polygons. But still… what a coincidence! It’s almost enough to make you believe that the ghost of the Oracle of Delphi really does haunt Deus Ex.

I always wondered how this was supposed to make any sense at all given that the skyline (a screenshot of which is shown right there in the article!!) is clearly a 2D image rather than being polygonal…?

Re:Deus Ex by adamrezich on Friday November 06, 2026 @04:38PM (#50398861)
Looked it up, and apparently Harvey Smith, the lead designer, said, in an interview with IGN [0]:

> When we made the skyline in the background we had pieces with the Twin Towers and pieces for the other parts of the city and for New Jersey. The texture memory was so high that I couldn’t use it all. I took one of the pieces and put it on one side, flipped it and put it on the other. So I made New York out of one half of the city so the Twin Towers were out.

> When people complained, we just explained that it had been destroyed by terrorist attacks. We start the game with the Liberty Island statue having been destroyed by terrorists a few years before. We just said that the towers had been destroyed too. And this was way before 9-11. Years.

Then, in 2012, Warren Spector said, in an interview with Game Informer [1]:

> Did you notice in the skyline on the City of New York, there’s no Twin Towers? […] It’s entirely coincidental, but this game about terrorism… and the Twin Towers are not part of the New York City skyline. […] We got rid of the Twin Towers, and I wish I could say we did it on purpose and we were, you know, sort of seeing the future, but it was actually just a mistake. The guy, the artist who did the skybox just, uh, left em out. And it sort of worked out in an unfortunate sort of way.

There's more about this that one can find online, including how apparently an image of the towers exists in the game's files, but hey, I'm not the one researching and writing the article and making claims that are plainly false on their face, which anyone can visually verify by looking at the screenshot right there in the article that is supposed to illustrate this supposed technical constraint!

Jimmy should probably fix the article to mention any or all of this, rather than repeating the often-retold urban legend, given how much he seems to care about factual accuracy in his writing! But, alas, he did not approve my comment, so maybe someone else can point this out to him instead.

>The excitable lads at Australia’s PC Powerplay, on the other hand, placed no such qualifiers on their declaration of love for Deus Ex. In a special feature published when the game was not yet three months old, they declared it to be quite simply The Best Game Ever: “Every action within Deus Ex’s expansive environments has far-reaching consequences, making it seem like the player is ensconced within a living, breathing world.”

I really miss PC Powerplay. It was great in its time.

That and Atomic were a cool combination of car-style modding culture with PCs. Super common now but innovative (and dangerous - "you're going to tell people to break their warranties by overclocking?!?!") at the time.

I worked with Ashton Mills for a little bit in the early 2000s and he was a standup guy, I included him in the Acknowledgements to a book I recently wrote as an inspiration.

Was not disappointed. Demiurge is still one of my favourite books.

The name mignt be misleading, but for the best vanilla plus experience, I highly recommend Deus Ex Randomizer with Zero Plus mode.

It has zero randomization, great setup experience on Windows and Linux, and what I consider to be the ideal set of changes for making the game better while adhering strictly to the vanilla experience. Not to mention all the bug fixes! The only thing I'd check for a vanilla experience is that password assistance is turned off.

I had a couple of friends play Deus Ex that way for the first time and it was a joy.

Unrelated, the randomizer speedrun mini-scene was the only time I did speedrunning and the most fun I've ever had replaying a game. The randomization aspect assuaged all my concerns about speedrunning having the wrong kind of repetitiveness for my preferences. I never saw myself doing speedruns, then I somehow ended up doing a world record. All because I saw a randomizer speedrun race and thought it was the coolest thing ever. If you're _that_ kind of Deus Ex fan, you owe it to yourself to check it out!
