So what you are saying is they forgot the word "small" in "arginine is an amino acid small children need to grow".

The claim is that it is a literal translation, not that it is a loan word from German. Ie the Germans wrote their paper for this new control flow in German wenn/dann/sonst, then took their Langenscheidt and looked up "sonst".

Re:How to run a city builder on 16 MHz on Saturday October 24, 2026 @07:25AM (#50220240)
It ran great on a Performa 475 (25 MHz Motorola 68LC040). I guess that settles that old debate!
That sounds like Knuth came up with them, but the notation is much older than 1976
Re:Open Source Games on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @03:16PM (#50186076)
As a kid, I would have been all over this. The signal to noise ratio is pretty bad, but that was also true for shareware collections (how about another implementation of Mahjongg) and it didn't stop me. Granted, kids these days probably have other ways to spend their time.

France completely exited New York, the Netherlands roughly halved what they've stored there. That was in 2026. They didn't physically ship any of it, they sold it and rebought in Europe.

Germany moved 111t from New York in 2016, and, afaict, nothing since then. There's still 1236t left.

Italy also keeps over 1000t in New York (no plans for repatriation).

Germany's naturalization rate is not out of the ordinary for the EU, either per capita or per number of foreign residents. Italy, Belgium, Spain and others "hand out more passports" relative to their own population than Germany; Poland, Ireland, the Netherlands and others "hand out more passports" relative to the amount of refugees that live in their countries. Germany is very much middle of the road. So, you know, whatever.

Re:The designer lamps in my house on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @09:53AM (#49978527)
I have a similar lamp that also makes you press and hold. Annoying. Yours even has that knob (mine is all touch) -- it should just have a physical detent at the end that cuts power, you know, like lots of dimmable lamps used to have.

I was curious what they're currently sponsoring; here's another neat OSM project: https://osm2world.org/demo/?lat=52.5239396&lon=13.4104859&ra...

The current demo doesn't seem to cover many places worldwide, but what is there is really neat! To me this already looks better than modern city sim games, because they never seem to get the scale right, among other things.

Not sure what's stopping them from covering more places, since the idea presumably is to generate these tiles from existing OSM data. And in fact one of the easiest things to do with StreetComplete is add the height and type of a building.

Can anybody explain what the actual question was about? On the face of it, it's about this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDoc#Cancellation I guess. And Java?

They link to a cornucopia of samples they made available on archive.org at the bottom of the article (not in-line, where I was looking for them). Doom, which is fairly widely known, starts at #57: https://archive.org/details/DOS-Gaming-General-MIDI-Comparis...
That analogy works for encryption but doesn't really work for signature verification
Think about it, the key analogy is just terrible. In the origin domain, losing a key is always bad, and making a key available to all is a non sequitur.

It's not like non-technical people understand asymmetric cryptography. Or even technical people, for that matter.

Maybe we should refer to the public key as an address, and the private key is just a password again. You can send stuff, securely, to an address. And you can verify the sender when you have their address (ie check the signature).

The numbers you are probably referring to are for the market share in any given year.

Since people tend to stay married for years, and tungsten wasn't as popular previously, the actual number of adult men wearing tungsten wedding bands is probably a lot lower, maybe around 10%.

Still a lot. Approximately nobody wears them in Germany; seems like an opportunity.

That may well be true of the people you know, but in general the relationship is exactly what one would expect: the higher people's income, the more expensive their car purchases.

Europe, yes, EU, no. Alde had 5% for EU, I quoted a source for 6% for the EU.
Doesn't appear to be true, it's < 10% for the biggest cities (based on cursory research). Rome was 5% pre COVID; less now.

More like 6%, roughly in line with its population share (5.4%). Not sure if that includes air travel, international air travel often isn't included in national statistics. https://edgar.jrc.ec.europa.eu/report_2025
Tourism is 10% of the economy, most of it is domestic or internal to Europe; most of it doesn't involve air travel or city hopping.
I sometimes wish my scale was precise to below 1g when measuring yeast for long-rising (bread) dough. A recipe may ask for 1g, and adding 2g will make a huge difference.
Re:Air Conditioning Is Not a Luxury, It Is a Necessity on Thursday August 27, 2026 @08:22AM (#49463632)
Spot on. You're doing heatpump based cooling without floor heating? I didn't realise that was an option.
I just spent fifteen minutes to corroborate the numbers for Germany, and they appear to be a vague guess by Statista.

There don't appear to be any reliable stats or studies, which I find surprising; the few studies I could find had people use way less tp, eg https://www.radiohamburg.de/aktuelles/hamburg/Wie-scht-Hambu...

So I'm inclined to believe the 134 is hogwash; no idea if the numbers for the US are more reliable.
