Unfortinatly no. A lot of channels moved to OFTC or other networks instead (and some quit IRC entirely) so Libera isn't the one stop for open source IRC that Freenode was.
> And the hostile takeover person, Andrew Lee, deleted the Freenode database.

But only after it was clear that most channels were leaving anyway. In a way, that was the only good thing he did in this mess: reduce fragmentation that we would have gotten as some stuck to Freenode.

Even if that is possible for a pristine disc, you really do want that error recovery for discs people are actually expected to use.

It might also affect you positively. Memento mori.

> In every thread on this not a single person I have expressed anything other than regret for having heard it

That's because most people who don't feel the need to be overdramatic also don't need to feel the need to comment about it.

Re:Private Jet plane crashes in Florida on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @06:11AM (#50350511)
He is being overdramatic. It's pretty bening as far as what you can find on the Internet goes.
"Peak" writing was never a realistic expectation for Bioware - not even in the Infinity Engine days.

Shouldn't the missile warhead contribute to the crater size though?
Re:Nine killed as small jet crashes on Florida street on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @04:11AM (#50349728)
There is nothing wrong with people trying to understand what happened.

> but when things go this wrong it is more or less impossible for anyone on board to survive

That's not true, crash survival is actually higher than one might naively expect. It's just that the more violent crashes get the most exposure - and even for those you can get lucky like the one guy who walked of the Air India crash last year.

And to even have a crash at all will usually need more than one thing to go wrong.

The gp's point that deviating around the storm when it was apparent would have been a decision that cost more fuel. That there could have been theoretical routes that avoided the storm and not cost more fuel is useless hindsight.

It was "published" in that sense before the news outlets got a hold of it, by individuals without a profit motive - the news outletsprobably wouldn't have even known to look. I disagree that this is a bad things. The dead and their families are not the only ones who matter when it comes to the operation of deadly machinery and the recording helps people get an idea before the NTSB is done with their investigation (which will take a long time). Besides, the family and friends of the pilots might even get some closure from the recording and get to hear their loved ones final words - and if they don't then no one is forcing them to listen to it.
Re:WTF Ubuntu? on Monday November 02, 2026 @10:43AM (#50338393)
Do most VPSs even use distro kernels rather than kernels from the VPS provider?
Havy any of Bioware's developers?
What, Alyx is literally "Half-Life, but in VR". It's fiarly polished but the concept is not creative at all. They barely even pushed the overall series plot forward and there's like one whopping new character.
We used to have AA studios that produced something in between those though. Not all types of games lend themselves to indie scale and I'd argue that (C)RPGs are one of those.
Re:The future in old computer magazines (1984–2004) on Monday November 02, 2026 @09:59AM (#50337711)
Sucks when people are putting in all the hard work to physically scan stuff for preservation only to skimp out on the bits.
Neither are the on prem employees in each store.
Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Monday November 02, 2026 @09:38AM (#50337427)
Can you cite even one reliable source for your claim?

Yes, this is technically possible but to claim that there are TVs that actually do this is something else.

Re:Patrick Stewart has died on Monday November 02, 2026 @08:13AM (#50336402)
Picard went to both of these things as well AND had the implants on top.
Re:Patrick Stewart has died on Monday November 02, 2026 @08:06AM (#50336310)
Going from second in command on the federations flagship to his own command on some other ship is not such a clear advancement. And that goes from many of the other characters too: They are already at the top of their particular nieche and any "advancement" would mean switching to an entirely different job.
Re:Patrick Stewart has died on Monday November 02, 2026 @07:59AM (#50336239)
I think that's what makes TNG and TOS great actually. I can do without hack writers forcing "character development" to up the drama.
Re:Patrick Stewart has died on Monday November 02, 2026 @07:47AM (#50336104)
That's a cop out.
Re:Patrick Stewart has died on Monday November 02, 2026 @07:19AM (#50335848)
The situation on the station in Babylon 5 is that intergalactic peace is incredibly fragile and the station is basically a last ditch effort of making it work. It, like most of Star Trek, is also a military operation.

According to whose defintion for standard of living?

Re:Patrick Stewart has died on Monday November 02, 2026 @06:56AM (#50335663)
How much of an Utopia is Star Trek really? It's a future where told from the point of vew of a very much military organization who as far as we can see is the main interstellar represenation of Humanity.
Re:Forging a Microsoft Edge Full Chain with Logic Bugs Only on Thursday October 29, 2026 @08:43AM (#50288039)
That's downplaying how LLMs discourage humans from thinking themselves by providing an easier "good enough" path.
Re: on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @12:47PM (#50276600)
Good on EA not that this is going to redeem them.
And I also remember that even in that case resistance was in fact not futile in the end.
Re:Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @11:16AM (#50260632)
LibX11 is still alive and kicking. It is however possible to bundle libX11 and/or libxcb (libX11 today sits on top of libxcb) because the wire protocol between them and the X server is also backwards compatible.

And of course Wayland has XWayland to continue compatibility. This doesn't give you access to new toys but neither does restricting yourself to a 30-year old Win32 API.

And beyond libc/libX11/libxcb, libasound has also provided good backwards compatibility with newer systems implementing shims to make it work. You can also use libpulse directly if you don't care about old/opinionated systems though.

Yes, why even put the slop on Wikipedia when you can get it directly from the source.
