I think we can all agree that Trump is the most corrupt we have seen for a long time. but It doesnt change that carrot and the stick problem. There are people operating to destroy freedom using these people as figureheads to push an authoritarian agenda, on both sides of the isle. Until people wake up to that, we have no chance to change this.
No. We have to direct our energy to a different way of doing things. Voting inside of a corrupt system not working. Its like going into a mafia controlled city and voting for criminals expecting different results. How many decades need to elapse for this to be clear to you?
> The only solution is to elect better people. I know some people who hoped that Trump would be that in 2016 but he is just more of the same.

The system is rigged in such a way where that isn't a possibility. Look at the history of our country. ITS NOT WORKING.

The system has to change before we can elect better people. I cant believe I have to point this out with all thats going on... Every election the same arguments and the same responses.

Yep this authoritarian movement is much bigger than the parties. We will see, again and again, how much it matters and the go back to the same old game every election and everyone will forget about how they have been played the first time. Im so sick of this corrupt system.
You know what I love? We have spent over 100 years going back and forth on party politics. It has done nothing to move the bar on justice. The democrats silently allow the same things under the radar while the republicans do things out in the open. Its the carrot and the stick approach. Populism isn't working. We need to focus on systemic change. Both parties are filled with institutionalists that will do nothing to stop the real abuses because they gain significantly by keeping things they way they are..

Well I thought these things were torries related but I'm less sure about that. Not that it matters either way. Authiratianism seems like an epidemic that's affecting everyone with strong egos.
Re:Ofcom Concedes Defeat in the 4chan Case on Thursday October 22, 2026 @12:45AM (#50191268)
We have ICE agents rounding up people of color and disappearing them, so I'm not saying our problems are worse than yours I'm just saying we have common ground.
Re:Ofcom Concedes Defeat in the 4chan Case on Thursday October 22, 2026 @12:41AM (#50191247)
The age verification laws using third parties to store digital id data that can be accessed and misused by 3rd parties is one example to me across the board that is part of an authoritarian agenda happening in many countries including the UK. We have a poster boy Trump that is being propped up as a dictator in the U.S by special interests (Instutionalists) that only have an interest in making money off the backs of the people by using our political offices for these corrupt practices. I read about the postal scandal in the uk and that seems remarkably similar to how our government and corporations work togeather to disenfranchise its people. I guess I'm saying we have more in common around these topics than we do differences. And trust me I'm not trying to lesson our role in what the U.S. is doing to the whole world. I'm doing my part to stand against what our government is doing. You can see what I'm doing on my website https://scottrlarson.com/blog. It's not much but it's the best I can do right now.
Re:Ofcom Concedes Defeat in the 4chan Case on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @05:13PM (#50187716)
I'm not seeing how it's any different except you have a whole political party doing the damage of the same scale.
Re:Ofcom Concedes Defeat in the 4chan Case on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @11:32AM (#50182739)
Well for me, I'm looking at the U.S problems first and foremost. And I see the UK is having problems under the authoritarianism banner same as us. But I don't judge UK's problems with the U.S. I see the UK as having big problems with freedom and corruption of the political system but I'm not a UK citizen so I have no idea. I always start with my own country and feel sad about what's happening across the world. The topics that are important to me are surveillance and censorship, and those issues are happening across different countries. The point I was trying to make originally was that we the U.S. need to focus on our own problems and stop worrying about other countries problems until we fix our own. And here in the US we have problems with corruption that needs to be fixed. We need to stop allowing money to affect our political system first and foremost and secondly, we need to stop corporations from making the world worse by enforcing antitrust.
Re:Ofcom Concedes Defeat in the 4chan Case on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @08:27PM (#50174550)
What the hell are you talking about? We have the same problems as the UK and they are just as bad. We are at the cusp, while the UK is further in, but we still have the same problems..
Re:Ofcom Concedes Defeat in the 4chan Case on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @04:08PM (#50171952)
> I wish them luck in that important work. In the meantime, we Americans have plenty more work to do on this side of the pond to protect our border and prevent the British, Australian, Russian, and other foreign censorship regimes from crossing it.

We got our own problems with Authoritarianism. There is no need to protect our borders from something our own government and corporations are practicing day in and day out on our own people, in our own country. You might want to acknowledge that first, before assuming we got problems across the pond.

And BTW the real answer is to enforce antitrust and put an end to Citizens United to prevent money from flowing into our political institutions and reign in these corrupt business. You might want to add that as well to your point about the GRANITE Act

Re:Namecheap just seized and disabled all my domains on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @10:09AM (#50166729)
That information doesn't stay with you domain provider. It's a 3rd party data collection system that will be used to surveil people eventually.
Maybe I'm missing something but didn't micron exit the consumer DDR market for HBM? I don't see a rollback from that. When you say DDR will ease last, in what reality would memory makers go back to a market they left behind?
Re:Namecheap just seized and disabled all my domains on Monday October 19, 2026 @11:37PM (#50161048)
You either see the long term ramifications of data collection, Or you don't.
Re:Namecheap just seized and disabled all my domains on Monday October 19, 2026 @12:26PM (#50154367)
Thanks for the heads up. Not a good outcome for a trusted domain provider like Porkbun
Re:Namecheap just seized and disabled all my domains on Monday October 19, 2026 @01:15AM (#50148626)
Porkbun is using surveillance tech to combat fraud now so I would be careful[0]

There's a reason for that. Israel is a test bed to remove freedoms world-wide through digital surveillance.
Re:Passkeys Are Not a Trap on Thursday October 15, 2026 @01:52AM (#50099716)
That's what the big corps are trying to do by forcing people to use passkeys by making it the only solution.
Re:Passkeys Are Not a Trap on Thursday October 15, 2026 @01:40AM (#50099648)
This is the rub for me. Passkeys are really about protecting the site and not the user. Its really designed backwards IMHO.
This happened to me. My site got shutdown for awhile because of the traffic after I posted an article on HN. I think they are trying to DDOS me (puts on Tin Foil Hat)
Re:Thunderbird for iOS on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @08:33PM (#50080910)
There is a reason why the 3 big three are trying to phase out web/email standards, lets let them control the open web moar.
Nothing's going to change with the Democrats in. The authoritarianism will be done but behind the scenes much more.

Remember the whole system is filled with institutionalists who believe following in the program, no matter who sets the standards.

We need to focus on systemic change rather than populism.

Id rather use shity software thats not tied to a conglomerate.
Excactly. Teams is pretty bad, but people use it because they are forced to use shitty software by being tied to Mirsofts eco system
> “That is not the case with Teams, where all we have is a guarantee that Microslop will not peek inside,” that official wrote, per Politico.

Or maybe that your comms won't get taken down by the U.S. like what happened to that judge that put a warrant out for bibi.

What a bunch of fucking idiots. And BTW teams is really bad as well. More features and the most bloat.

which anarchy are you talking about, the chaos one where everybody out for themselves, or the one with out rulers where there are leaders and people work together out of there own sense of authority?

Real anarchy isnt about getting rid of laws, its about getting rid of people that use laws to rule over everyone else.
