Remember the science mines in Egan's Diaspora? It's like that
Good comic. Good drawing etc.
This might be my new favorite language. Deeply sane.
Re:SS United States to be sunk as largest artificial reef on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @07:00PM (#50267086)
Well that's symbolic as heck. A component in a piece of ritual magic maybe. Somebody should feature it that way in a comic book.
Re:AI promised less work. I've never worked more on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @02:10PM (#50263348)
It was a question. You answer it.
Like, per-ounce?
Re:AI promised less work. I've never worked more on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @10:13AM (#50259702)
Therefore we can make the job more stressful. Because the beach soaks up the stress.
Re:AI promised less work. I've never worked more on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @09:59AM (#50259464)
Well, if my life gets easier (from these benefits) then I can work harder at my job. That's the logic, right?

When I get stronger the load gets heavier. When I run faster the road gets longer.

As an artist, there is the temptation to hoard my works like Smaug on his hill of treasure. But I got past that in a moment of weed-inspired revelation : I am the fruit-bearing tree. Therefore my wealth is infinite. In fact every fruit I bear is better than the last. So giving it away is not such a biggie. And clutching it to my breast like a boney vampire is in fact detrimental to my process. I put great faith in the process.

Technological progress only serves the ruling class. Can we say that?
Thanks. Always looking for good sci-fi
Re:When Do We Become the Person We Ought to Be? on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @10:31PM (#50190461)
I relate. There was this one saint, Augustine I think, who, entering puberty, realized that the mind-control orbs dangling between his legs were gonna interfere with his life-goals, so he cut em off.

Maybe that's the smart thing to do. I mean, does "fight and fuck" really enter into your saner agenda? Do you want it to?

It makes my head spin trying to think about it and then when I successfully give it a good think I get depressed and sometimes a bit hysterical.
Re:Namecheap just seized and disabled all my domains on Sunday October 18, 2026 @04:01PM (#50144862)
I use nfs as host too. Didn't know they did registrar. Thanks.

Ya every time I installed a slightly involved CMS it was a broken headache for some technical reason, so I gave that up. Made my own superuninvolved CMS and that works fine.

Assuming that nobody is gonna exploit it for marketing or other nefarious ends. A society that constantly videos everything would be kindof great. Everything documented. Everything searchable. Crime might become impossible. Like, no more murder or illegal dumping.
Everybody speaks in reversospeak when they get heated
We obviously need to dissect them to see how it works
Re:Wood Tape (2004) on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @09:10PM (#50000835)
If I was gonna tape wood I'd use cloth strips and silicone caulk. Make my own tape that way.
That's a good reason to only talk about scary stuff with deepseek.
Re:AI Makes Me Sad on Friday October 02, 2026 @12:27PM (#49935402)
AI makes something that was hidden, visible.

It's a thing inherent to thinking, language, machines and computers.

The thing is, it looks like life but it really isn't.

That fact is being rubbed in our face now. Treat it like life and it will make you sick, sooner or later.

Sooner now, because of AI. So thank AI for making the badness more immediately visible before it can do more damage. So you spit it out immediately instead of swallowing it for years.

Re:Ten Lines of Code That Changed My World on Sunday September 27, 2026 @01:05PM (#49868540)
My first shipped code was an art thing. C64 Basic. Poke random characters to random locations on the screen. Random colors, screen and border too. On infinite goto loop. Radio Shack (IIRC) in the local mall used it on all their C64s.
Re:Gravity Seems Holographic. What Does That Mean for Reality? on Saturday September 26, 2026 @12:09PM (#49857862)

Re:Earth is tearing apart beneath the Pacific Northwest on Saturday September 26, 2026 @11:31AM (#49857504)
subduction zone. a million years buried a mile underground, pulverized by lava and rocks, will erase literally any crime.
Re:Attention is all you have on Monday September 21, 2026 @01:31PM (#49790430)
Attention is the axis of reality. Focus on a thing and it gets realer. Ignore a thing and it fades away.
to hear it from the users, ya, it's all about censoring the other team. so that's why censorship is good.

to hear it from the mods, it's about being responsible for what's said to the admins above. so that's why they need to have censorship power.

Re:The senior engineer death spiral on Sunday September 20, 2026 @01:45PM (#49778095)
i voice to text. in hopes of getting the thing to stop capitalizing every third word because it's somebody's trademark, i told it to stop autocapitalizing. So here i am. blame Google
They should be paying them to meditate. That would be the more healthful and revolutionary course.

Regular daily intellectual concentration is much the same be it game, book or reddit. And it makes you crazy. You withdraw from reality.

I want an unmoderated space. Or rather, I want the tools of moderation to be in the hands of the users instead of a central authority.

Giving an anonymous rando the power to censor my conversation is abhorrent. And it's absurd that most people are ok with that.

"Dictatorship" is the standard forum design. Reddit, HN, X, Lemmy... All of them. And censorship is common. We literally prefer it that way. I think it's to create a solid blame trail. I think that's a necessary thing.
