News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

I would have thought this is for archiving pre-slop-era data, but archiving slop might be archaeologically interesting too.

Right, like when generating code you can just say "make no mistakes" and it will make no mistakes.

Re:I Am the Reason OpenAI Is Killing Unlimited Chats on Monday November 02, 2026 @10:25AM (#50338097)
Even if so, next week will be different again.

Why does it matter whether it was porn? Would you be more sympathetic if those petabytes were filled with pictures of roses?
Never trust an experiment you haven't faked yourself.
The knockers are missing solar panels to continuously charge their batteries. So there will be sustained costs to keep them running. And how water-proof are they? Apart from that, it's going to sell like hot cakes.

> _almost literally everyone_

Sorry to disappoint, but I don't even know what a Wii looks like. I've always been using my computer to play games on.

I have no doubts that there will also be new bugs.
The hardware it runs on has capacitors as its components and some of them do in fact contain electrolytes.
So there's a real risk that Cisco might become history in just a few years. Taking that kind of risk with a rather unproven technology has to be psychosis. Or is that kind of belief a form of Religion?
But this one generates more clicks because "AI" is hot right now and has religious following.

Ultra-capitalism will eliminate anything that is not completely bland sanitized antiseptic total mainstream. Creativity will only be found in the profit maximizing methods.

Re:AI promised less work. I've never worked more on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @11:45AM (#50261043)
Let me get this straight: If someone who works for you takes more time but achieves less in that time, you would still pay them more. And if they took less time but achieved more, you would pay them less? That's some sick logic.
It doesn't say how I can run it in llama.cpp locally. By next week I'll have forgotten all about it.
Re:The first broken iPhone Duos are here on Saturday October 24, 2026 @03:46PM (#50224452)
It's what happens when you rush a product. The indications that Apple has lost the plot are getting ever harder to ignore.
Re:The first broken iPhone Duos are here on Saturday October 24, 2026 @03:42PM (#50224415)
Or Apple could say that they were holding it wrong to save that cost.
Using slot machine technology to hallucinate a fake paper is new though.
So the disappointed sellers of ads and surveillance will buy legislation that makes this kind of LLM use illegal.
These Escher pages don't scroll and are generally unusable. Is that some Chrome-only garbage?
You're technically right, but, as always, convenience and passivity will prevail, Disney's move will be successful, and ads will keep spreading like a contagious disease. I can see the day coming where ads play on our retinal implants and even closing our eyes won't help against them anymore. Yes, in theory the masses could do what's necessary to stop enshittification, but in practice I would be very surprised if they actually did.
Re:25years of CrimeStoppers Tips to Police Leaked on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @10:44AM (#50181910)
Believing in anything that's connected to the internet being remotely "secure" is like believing in Santa Claus these days.
Re:Facebook now charging to post more than 2 links a month on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @10:41AM (#50181852)
That should make it clear for everyone who hasn't got the memo yet: You serve the Facebook, not the other way round.
Re:Big Tech Oligarchs Have a Terrible Plan for Humanity on Monday October 19, 2026 @12:21PM (#50154309)
These technofascists are today's equivalent to the eugenicists of 100 years ago. They believe they have the singular vision and the moral authority to dictate the future of humanity.

But it's also different this time because these maniacs come with the power of perverse amounts of money and control over actual technology.

We let them become that big and powerful and I have an inkling we might come to regret it.

Re:8 in 10 Americans oppose live-streaming execution on Monday October 19, 2026 @09:19AM (#50152105)
Everyone who is for the death penalty should be legally obligated to watch every single execution.
Re:macOS 15.8.2 Breaks OpenGL on Sunday October 18, 2026 @01:25PM (#50143189)
I never "upgraded" to macOS 15, but my situation is similar. None of my future computers will be Macs anymore. News like this only prove moving to Linux was the right decision in the nick of time.
Re:macOS 15.8.2 Breaks OpenGL on Sunday October 18, 2026 @01:16PM (#50143100)
So they keep breaking previously functioning components even in older OS versions? I thought those were only getting security updates?

Until recently only Windows was the OS where I thought, "how could anyone use that voluntarily?", but Apple has managed to put their OSs right next to that in the same category. After a monotonous decline over more than a decade the final slump only took them three years. They've gotten better at failing faster than before.

I wholeheartedly recommend Linux. Seriously.

You're absolutely right.
