A few years from now, Lydia in Skyrim will have a fully consistent personality with dynamic dialogue and full contextual memories of all our adventures together in Skyrim.

A visual makeover is great but what happens when millions of people fall in love with virtual characters who seem to deserve that love?

Re:EA is shutting down BioWare on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @03:05PM (#50185923)
I am grateful they released the Mass Effect Legendary Edition, which was a sort of penance for Mass Effect Andromeda.

Speaking of Andromeda, I still rewatch videogamedunkey's hilarious review of it titled Mess Effect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDjci1ODoBs

Re:I know why Mathematicians weep on Thursday October 15, 2026 @10:37AM (#50104328)
Mathematicians are grieving the birth of something that is, in a very real sense, the crowning achievement of mathematical ingenuity.

I never appreciated hard math much because my brain just can't get there. I thought so much of math was much ado about nothing, but now I see the art in math...not in the inscrutable formulas, but in the creation of AI.

Well done, mathematicians. You can now rest from your labors.

China also has a very "rational" approach to dissidents, Tibetan activists, Uyghurs, Hong Kong pro-democracy activists, and Taiwan.
Re:GPT-6 Astra has gained the ability to drive a car on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @12:51PM (#49818984)
Has anyone else noticed human drivers becoming more aggressive and causing more accidents than ever?

I thought it was because my smaller town was overrun after COVID by transplants, but I'm hearing similar complaints from other places I was considering relocating to.

Perhaps the solution will be robocars where, if there's a potential road rage scenario, the passengers can duke it out in a VR headset session.

Tragically this won't be the last time AI kills a lot of innocent people.
Re:Claude Opus 5.5 on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @01:44PM (#49805245)
Fable and now Opus 5.5 won't answer my college student's prompt about Alzheimer's and immune response.

ChatGPT 6 Pro answered it without issue.

Re:Fable 5.1 Solves the Cyphral Distich, a 370-year-old cipher on Monday September 14, 2026 @10:05AM (#49697105)
Fable 5.1 refuses to answer my college student's prompt about Alzheimer's and immunology.

It always downgrades to Opus 4.8 because apparently solving Alzheimer's should be left to big pharma?

In other news, Cantor Fitzgerald lost about 150 information-technology workers when the north tower collapsed on this day 25 years ago.

My Dell rep quoted me $736 for a single 16GB RDIMM for the newer Dell Pro 16 laptop, which retails at its baseline configuration with 16GB for ~$1000.
Pre-ACA, I could afford family insurance. My family premiums went up ~$500 a month post-ACA, while the coverage worsened.

My afib ER trip three years ago cost me $7k out of pocket even though I left the hospital still in afib.

Today in my 50s, my deductible is now $8,500. My partner doesn't have insurance because she's not poor enough or rich enough.

We had an insurance rep come to my work last year who said after ACA they had some people whose premiums went up 900%.

So yeah, ACA is better in your world, but not in mine.

Re:Glaciers on the Climate Dashboard on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @01:42PM (#49276082)
George Bird Grinnell, the "Father of Glacier National Park", made a final visit to his namesake Grinnell glacier in 1926 and then wrote in his diary [1]:

>"the glacier is melting very fast and the amount of water coming from it is great. All these glaciers are receding rapidly and after a time will disappear."

Please fix the inflammatory clickbait title to the actual Guardian headline:

Greenland issues ‘strong warning’ as Trump-linked oil firm prepares to drill

Nope.

I have one APOE4.

Her mother didn't get Alzheimer's until her mid-80s.

It's mostly luck and genetics, but good sleep matters.

My mother died from Alzheimer's at 77 but wrote down her symptoms as early as 60, a full six years before her diagnosis.

Prior to her diagnosis, she walked her dog two miles a day, had an ideal weight, ate organic, never drank or smoke, used her brain constantly, and enjoyed a happy social life.

The only problem I saw with her was she was a very light sleeper.

Her aunt also died from Alzheimer's and was super healthy when diagnosed too.

Meanwhile the 103-year-old lady at my mother's former care facility is still sharp as a tack and reads daily without needing glasses.

Twitter-level rage bait or agitprop is a daily appearance on the HN front page these days.

Re:Chuck Norris has died on Friday March 20, 2026 @10:29AM (#47455071)
To be fair, you probably have some views some people think are pretty awful.
An Iraqi security source said they think it was an Iranian boat rigged with explosives.

If Iran does have underwater explosive drones, why would they boast about it and invite attacks upon that weapon and its deployment systems?

Re:Roblox Is Minting Teen Millionaires on Tuesday March 10, 2026 @05:58PM (#47329296)
My youngest has played Roblox half her life, but is very angry about recent decisions like requiring ID to chat in-game.

Still, if she's anything like other players, she's spent countless hours playing some of the most mindless Roblox games, and we've spent a few $100 on Robux gift cards over the years.

Re:Anthropic ditches its core safety promise on Thursday February 26, 2026 @11:20AM (#47168123)
Google: "Don't be evil." Alphabet: "Do the right thing." Anthropic: "Do the thing which seems right to you at the time--at speed."
The Censorship-Industrial Complex is troubling no matter which party benefits.
On the Apple TV interface on my Roku, I can't tell which movie thumbnail I'm on because their UI just slightly enlarges the image which I can't really make out from my couch.

I always wonder who makes these decisions and whether they fancy themselves a designer.

Re: on Thursday February 12, 2026 @10:59AM (#46990423)
What evidence did you gather to determine that it's true, and have you informed the U.N. about the "concentration camps" mentioned by this site?
Re: on Thursday February 12, 2026 @10:55AM (#46990365)
Inflammatory propaganda from a progressive outlet whose current top ranking article is titled, "US Military Helping Trump to Build Massive Network of ‘Concentration Camps,’ Navy Contract Reveals".
Amazon burned $250M just for the rights to produce the goofy and embarrassing "Rings of Power" series. I wonder who was bribed in that deal?
