Re:Frontier Airlines Likely Breached on Sunday November 01, 2026 @09:22PM (#50332352)
As someone who has been working at a software supply chain security startup for the last 5 years of my life, watching it hemorrhage customers and watching our team get whittled down to essentially just me as our budget gets cut, while the rest of the company's token spend balloons past whatever we were paying the people we cut from my team... I think I'm done. I'm increasingly thinking I have to leave the computer industry in general or I'm going to off myself.
Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @02:59PM (#50279097)
Same, my latency in the home (which is where I spend 99% of my time), even over WiFi, is generally <5ms, which is plenty low enough to stream the desktop to the laptop via Sunshine+Moonlight and even control fast-paced FPS games.
I mean, I openly identify with the plight of the Luddites. Do you have a more detailed rebuttal.
Are you insinuating that anti-AI people are merely experiencing a skill issue?
Re:Neural chip decodes interactions between brain regions on Sunday October 25, 2026 @02:03AM (#50228764)
Tangentially related: recently I've taken to doing a kind of "meditation-like" thing while trying to sleep where I imagine the number 300 visually, and attempt to count down towards zero, decrementing this counter visualization in my mind's eye. For an extra challenge, I try to do this while mentally saying the word "tock", but NOT mentally saying the current number. I find it extremely difficult, which is stimulating enough to keep my mind from wandering to places that tend to keep me awake, but not so stimulating that it prevents me from sleeping.

Valve's Source Engine has pretty famously been source-available for its entire(?) lifespan, there's no need to decompile their games.
Re:There isn't an easy exploit for this PHP vulnerability on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @10:23PM (#50190396)
I feel like half of working in the cybersecurity industry is just cultivating your social media persona. It's bizarre. I left a viral up-and-coming startup over it. It was mixing into everyone's personas at work in weird and uncomfortable ways, as someone who doesn't use traditional social media.

The one downside of being named Ian is being predisposed to misread lowercased "LAN"
Where is it hosted that costs a few cents per month?
Re:New PlayStation 5 Console Jailbreak Released on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @09:49PM (#49903398)
I've been saying this for years. These companies don't want you to own the compute hardware. They just want to flash the colored pixels in front of you.
Re:Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah on Monday September 28, 2026 @02:21PM (#49882198)
What, succinctly, is your point? You first claimed that this was not a genocide, then posted a link to a list of other genocides. Are you saying that none of the genocides in your list happened? Or that they are miscategorized?
Re:Goodbye Google on Friday September 25, 2026 @02:16AM (#49840752)
IMO it's really not hard to extrapolate where this all ends up if you've read e.g. Das Kapital, and even if you haven't...
Organizing into communities and societies is absolutely what has allowed humanity to prosper beyond the sum of its parts. Our propensity for both idealism and shame, while being deeply intertwined with our vulnerability to highjacking, are also things that allow us to imagine something better and strive to achieve it. There's nothing that brings out shame better than the presence of other people, and nothing more inspiring than working well together with others towards a common goal.
Re:“I just chose words carefully” on Monday August 31, 2026 @02:33AM (#49506309)
There's a famous example of this in Malcolm in the Middle where the camera cuts to a different shot and a stand-in for Dewey is visible in the 16:9 release, but was not visible in the original 4:3 broadcast. So in one shot you have Dewey's normal actor, then in the next there is some random kid.

Neat, stealing this.
Re:Go 1.27 on Wednesday August 19, 2026 @04:20PM (#49366680)
Unfortunately for people SELECTing UUIDs out of a DB directly into a uuid struct, the built-in uuid structs don't implement the necessary interface for that, so you'll have to continue using the google package, or a plain string.

Re:Apple Upgrade on Tuesday July 28, 2026 @02:43PM (#49088171)
What I really want is a trade-in system that pays out closer to what I'd get selling my Macbook on Craigslist or something. I want to stay within Apple's ecosystem and upgrade regularly, but I'd end up having to shell out nearly full price every time to do so, so I don't upgrade and no money changes hands at all. If they weren't quite so greedy with it, they could easily extract hundreds from me per year.
Re:Chatto is now Open Source on Thursday July 09, 2026 @08:49AM (#48845055)
Yep, instantly lost all interest. I'm not sure how impressive it is that somebody vibecoded a browser-based chat app over the course of several months. I also don't know what difference it makes that the dev is a really cool guy, or whatever; I'm sure he is, but the usage of AI is unethical, plain and simple, and I won't support it at all whenever feasible.

Any idea how that works? Something with the microphone maybe?
Re:I feel like giving up on coding on Saturday June 20, 2026 @05:08AM (#48607640)
> But some of us just want to get something out of our heads and built without months of back and forth with a developer.

A different perspective:

I'd like to still be employed 5 years from now in the field I've spent all of my adult life building a career in.

Re:U.S. kids no longer reading for pleasure on Friday June 19, 2026 @10:04PM (#48605633)
No it did not!
I've seen physical billboards in the Portland, OR area for OpenAI, so I guess that accounts for at least part of it. Not really sure what kind of return they're getting on those but apparently they can just do whatever they want, even if they're losing money.
Re:U.S. kids no longer reading for pleasure on Wednesday June 10, 2026 @10:36PM (#48485609)
Anecdotally, 2012 is when I got back in to reading for pleasure, as a 16-year-old. I had no friends though, and thought someone cute might see me reading and become interested in me.

Prior to that, I stopped reading because video games were easy to get lost in endlessly. At the time, I recall I was probably playing a lot of League of Legends, TF2, Minecraft, and probably some others -- all of which I felt I could pretty much sink an infinite amount of time into, at the time.

Re:Changing How We Develop Ladybird on Friday June 05, 2026 @06:44AM (#48410601)
I, very genuinely, highly recommend reading the Wikipedia page about the Luddites if you feel confused. This is a class consciousness problem. People feel conflicted because they know they aren't acting in their own best interests when they use generative AI (i.e. it does not lead us, as a society, to a good place -- mainly due to our bought-out legislature).
I get that they're pushing AI really hard, but the article bearing so many of the hallmarks of being AI-generated almost feels crass, like there are no humans at the company who feel strongly enough about this device to author 5-6 enthusiastic paragraphs about its features, they had to outsource to something that can somewhat convincingly mimic enthusiasm. Yet I'm supposed to care...
I evangelized localstack at my company a while back, but as we integrated it deeper into our CI test runs we started running into more and more things they don't support, and it feels impossible to get any attention from their support/devs despite being paying customers.

Their Cloud Pod and ephemeral instance features in particular feel pretty half-baked and not very useful at the moment.

Fun tangent: it's pretty easy to write a crack for the pro version; we actually used that for about a month as a pilot to confirm that it would do what we needed it to.

Re:Block the "Upgrade to Tahoe" Alerts on Sunday March 01, 2026 @01:30PM (#47209343)
Not the person you replied to, but I immediately switched back to iTerm2 after finding that Ghostty broke SSH to nearly all my servers by having an odd custom terminfo thing or something. iTerm2 requires no extra configuration after install on my end, whereas I needed to change several things about Ghostty and the UX for changing settings is terrible.
Re:What AI coding costs you on Saturday February 28, 2026 @01:51PM (#47198852)
Yes! I love to code. I love the entire process end-to-end. I love doing all the things people say they prefer to hand off to LLMs. Makes me sad to see all the people allowing corporations to slowly rob them of all the little joys this field has to offer.
