I'm wondering who published "Attention is All You Need" and brought this devastation to Google... Oh I remember, it was Google.

> The second thing is that GT got really slow with all the data structure re-interpreting and rerendering.

Ironically enough, I was thinking about the same thing in the morning of the day I replied to you, that gives the amount of data JS provides in the runtime, do we really need Smalltalk for a live system? I agree with you fully.

I guess something about me doesn't want to accept that BB can be a superior GT!

Re:Pharo 14 on Monday October 26, 2026 @01:51PM (#50247948)
I was talking at around a year ago with Tudor Girba and asked him what is his opinion towards AI---I somehow believed it to be conflicting with his world view, but then he showed me some amazing demos of llms walking inside of the GT, making tools and molding it. It was way before these new agentic plugin-based IDEs.

I think Girba's really amazing idea of "language = ui = software = data" has a huge win in terms of AI that is not used anywhere else (maybe only in Chris Granger's Eve), but to work with data and build live on it, is something way better than BB.

Re:How close can pure functional programming get to C? on Saturday October 24, 2026 @04:38AM (#50219314)
This is kind of hacker news post and comments I like; extreme languages on extreme performance with extreme features, not types being added to a language ten gizzilion times slower than a tortoise and the post making anti-type flat-earthers getting freaked out if they have to vaccinate next.

Exactly.
Re:The HTML-in-Canvas API origin trial on Friday October 23, 2026 @09:02AM (#50208338)
This is the best news ever! I can't believe it was implemented in just one year after that blogpost... Boy I'm going to be spending good portions of my life making with this API...

Re:Does Ruby on Rails still make sense? on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @07:42AM (#50179267)
Rails is slow, and it has little tooling. If it was me I would have used Go so that compiler would give the LLM some errors and narrow its error window, is way faster than Ruby and makes way more sense to have a way faster code than a slow one for the same price, everyone can read Go code and it is so narrow in the possible space of decisions that an LLM can never write usual spaghetti that it writes in other languages to save tokens... I think the problem is in looking at Rust as the alternative.

That is just so stupid...
Re:Namecheap just seized and disabled all my domains on Sunday October 18, 2026 @03:48PM (#50144704)
Yeah, but their treatment was terrible.
Re:Namecheap just seized and disabled all my domains on Sunday October 18, 2026 @03:47PM (#50144700)
Yeah, but you don't have to be such horrible people about it. At least give the person a few days to move their stuff. And I wasn't checking it from Iran.
Re:Namecheap just seized and disabled all my domains on Sunday October 18, 2026 @03:05PM (#50144208)
I'm an Iranian---which is something you have no choice in, you just turn 4~5 and understand enough language that they tell you that you are an Iranian. And well out of believing namecheap is a good company (since I had my DNS there) I purchased my domain from them. Then one day these fuckers banned my domain, and my access to the dashboard without any warnings or headsup, didn't even allow me to move my domain to somewhere else, and those vultures from GoDaddy bought it in the auction and have put it for 3500€... Horrible people

A very high bar prediction of the future which sadly like all utopias could not be delivered.

Re:Thunderbird for iOS on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @12:41PM (#50074624)
I don't get why Mozilla's designs are so ugly. It's 2026, everyone has beautiful designs and some browsers (Arc, Dia) are so gorgeous you don't want to work with anything else. And then this not-even-released mail app looks like old Bootstrap web apps. I used to love Mozilla for having some of the most beautiful designs. The era of Forefox OS and Firefox 4 with their beautiful beautiful designs and then they said no; threw out that beautiful dinosaur logo for whatever this ugly pointless one is and now look at their software. My eyes hurt for the amount of design problems in Firefox. Okay you made a bad one, at least start something new correctly.
Re:Apple HomeView on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @11:37AM (#50073407)
I thought this would be their big announcement...
At 200 you will get a faithful recreation of a SS outfit, tailored to you. This is all plus a signed copy of mein kampf, by none other than führer trump. (More donations buys you antichrist hunting with billionaires)
Wow. This is insane.
Re:Apple/macOS silently removed from official Unix registry on Saturday October 10, 2026 @10:42AM (#50033481)
When you're small, you need the certificates and badges others give you to be seen and be validated. I really don't think anyone needs to become familiar with Apple or macOS and that any of these certificates now matter a tiny amount to a multi trillion dollar corporation.

Given the amount and volume of software that mac has, the fact that almost all new interesting stuff are released for mac first or even mac alone, I also don't think it needs to attach itself to bigger names for platforms.

I think the financial burden of Ubuntu Mobile, Unity 8, and Mir; and the immediate rise of docker and WSL made canonical fully shift to server, so much so that their website no longer is about a better os for people, but what can it do for your cloud. Other distros also followed its path and Linus became all in on servers and IoT. I see windows as the biggest pile of trash in the world. Infinitely inconsistent, buggy, patched worked, visionless and rotting. Honestly that is one piece of software that is worse that AI slop.

And so what is there for Apple to compete with honestly? Haiku? Solaris?
