Models have proclivities, and many people use the same model.

Imagine all books on earth were written by just 5 people - and worse, they could not remember what they had written yesterday. You would quickly get tired of reading the same flourishes and patterns over and over.

Whatever style models currently in use have, that's what people are going to be tired of, and it's what they're going to recognize as "AI".

Re:Show HN: Qwen3-4B with the AI writing tics trained out by sejje on Monday October 19, 2026 @09:54AM (#50152551)
I predict by the end of the year they'll have a style/voice selector for responses.

You can already do that in your agents.md file, of course, or ask for a re-write and dodge the sameness.

Re:Show HN: Qwen3-4B with the AI writing tics trained out by MisterMunchkin on Monday October 19, 2026 @12:23PM (#50154325)
They have tried to implement that but it doesn't really work, because they've polluted the underlying model with slop.

> I predict by the end of the year they'll have a style/voice selector for responses.

Why would they add it now? This has been a solved problem since GPT3.5, just prompt it to write in a different style and/or never use specific phrases.

The reality is that for 99% of people and use cases, they just do not fucking care. They're either using chatgpt as a 1:1 chat interface where the AI style is fine, or they're sending off homework/generating reports to send to their boss/etc, which they know will never be read and just summarized by an AI anyway, so what's the point.

The most difficult thing in doing it yourself is knowing what to ask for. I can ask my model to talk like a caveman or like a Baltic pirate. But asking for something more nuanced, in the range of regular speech, requires the correct lingo

I'm sure it's trivial for somebody who has studied communication or contemporary linguistics, just as it's trivial for me to ask an LLM for tenant-isolation using row-level security in an app

Re:Show HN: Qwen3-4B with the AI writing tics trained out by ndriscoll on Monday October 19, 2026 @10:24AM (#50152897)
You could try taking a body of your own writing and asking it to characterize it/come up with a prompt (or fine tune if you can) describing your style and quirks.
Re:Show HN: Qwen3-4B with the AI writing tics trained out by techjamie on Monday October 19, 2026 @10:40AM (#50153062)
This is usually what I've had luck with. I've given it samples of my writing and told it to emulate my style. It did help, but it took some charistics of my speech and cranked them up to 10. I guess in hindsight I could have mentioned for it to take my writing quirks it finds and only apply them in moderation.

Reading what I did get out of it was just a bit uncanny valley strangely enough. Very much had some "hey there fellow kids" energy.

But you know what you like, and you know what bothers you, and the good news is that you don't have to one-shot a solution. You can create a skill and refine it over time. As you test and/or use it, identify copy you don't like and tell the LLM what you prefer instead, and ask it to distill and generalize that feedback into the skill.

I know what food I like, but that doesn't at all mean I know how to cook it.

Writing is similar. I enjoy well written texts, but that doesn't mean I can write them myself, or can tell an AI how to write in that way.

> I know what food I like, but that doesn't at all mean I know how to cook it.

Right, but you know what you like. The point is that you can tell the chef "too spicy" and send back the plate until you get what you want. He can then remember that, since you're his favorite regular.

I just went through this with a release notes skill. I brainstormed with the LLM about what I wanted, edited initial results when I saw something I didn't like or could be made better, than asked the LLM to capture that in the skill. Now I almost never need to touch it.

I gave Claude several pieces of writing from myself, from notes to code comments to iMessage messages with my wife[1], and asked it to write skills that match my voice. I also incorporated the humanizer[2] skill into it.

Worked like a charm. This is the prompt I used[3] to write a version for the company I own with my wife, if it helps anyone. The personal version, which lead to the `jamenizer` skill, is very similar, but has some personal details in it.

Re:Show HN: Qwen3-4B with the AI writing tics trained out by jamesponddotco on Monday October 19, 2026 @11:08AM (#50153412)
Yes, we talked about it, I explained to her what I was going to do, and she said she didn't mind. She doesn't work in tech, but we talk quite a lot about it, and she understands the implications.

Why do you assume I would do anything against my wife's will?

And I never said anything about "optimizing myself out of existence", this comment was still written by me and no LLM touched it.

But when writing comments on code or editing articles, reviews, and whatever long-form writing I give an LLM to review or edit, it's nice to know it'll keep my writing style, voice, and tone.

I'm already obligated to use LLMs at work, otherwise I might lose my job, so why wouldn't I want to have it write in a way I can actually understand?

The fact that you're doing that with your wife, with her consent, is no different. The real value is in keeping you grounded by someone outside tech.

That’s why Claude had a customizable style setting that let you just paste in example text to create a new writing voice. Not sure if they still have it or not.

You don’t need a built in feature though, you can just paste examples into the prompt and tell it to write in the same style.

>I predict by the end of the year they'll have a style/voice selector for responses.

Style permeates all aspects of writing: word choice, sentence structure, literary devices, pacing, plotting, characterization, dialog, theme, etc. Its a culmination of these things that is reinforced over again every sentence, paragraph, and chapter for potentially hundreds/thousands of pages.

I don't see how a prompt could reliably "tune" all of those different variables over such a large context window without it feeling like a surface level facsimile at best.

Human language isn't verifiable. If I ask for something "dark and gritty", there are endless outputs that are indeed "dark and gritty" yet completely miss the style I had in mind.

Trouble is, it’s still the same model, just with a request to sound different. It can only go so far. It’s much like asking an author to imitate the style of another author. They might do a decent job of it but they’ll never match perfectly. And that’s for humans who can actually learn. LLMs can’t.

Depends on the human.

I would use that turn of phrase (needs no XYZ) — but maybe not in the context of system prompts, perhaps. Though I don't know; sometimes a flourish is a nice thing.

You might be right that the clash of that vernacular pattern and technical language is a "tell", but AI did learn this stuff from actual people; a lot of the time Claude reminds me of an actual person who worked for a firm I worked for in the 90s, who wrote in an annoyingly gnome-wizard style.

Ultimately it's the volume of these problems that is the tell.

Re:Show HN: Qwen3-4B with the AI writing tics trained out by bityard on Monday October 19, 2026 @01:11PM (#50155003)
A human could write either. The former is just slightly more formal and concise.

Before AI, I used to write everything in somewhat formal phrasing mostly because I enjoyed it and a tiny bit because I assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that it made me sound smarter. Post-ChatGPT, I noticed that most LLMs had a writing style fairly similar to my own, so I changed my writing style to appear less formal in most circumstances. While I'm not anti-AI, I'm always fearful of being mistaken for a bot.

That's just a regional/educational quirk. Classically-educated folks and older Brits are both quite likely to use the "needs no" version.

Most "LLM voice" quirks come from actual human writing styles, even if Claude et al have managed to distil those styles into something pretty horrific.

On the other hand, the way you can tell the title line was at least edited by a human, is the missing comma before "and needs no system prompt".

Re:Show HN: Qwen3-4B with the AI writing tics trained out by dofm on Monday October 19, 2026 @11:42AM (#50153799)
I largely agree with this, though I think:

1) there's some value in internally generated text (automatic documentation, autosummary) being less aggravating

2) there are assistive applications — speech generated from sign language and touch panel communication etc. — and those users deserve a tool that can communicate for them in a way that has controllable or even personalisable outcomes.

3) a process of de-sloppifying text might also help train thinking clarity.

If you take this question far enough, you eventually reach a core philosophical debate:

"Does it matter what anything innately is, beyond the effects it has on you?"

For example: Suppose you were given a human companion with a robot brain that was your ideal friend. They made you laugh and you enjoyed every moment you spent with them.

Does it make it any less impactful/genuine to you that they're not a "real" human, or is your felt experience the only meaningful end-measure?

For me, it's the latter.

I would love if it could be a false dichotomy, but given conservative estimates pin about 30% of online posts to AI it seems like there may be a third outcome: we patch the visible holes of humans posting less and less from disinterest by making the bots post more and more.

The end result is that comment sections aren't enticing to join in on, just read. Which is perfect for ad impressions.

The sites that are there for ad impressions already worked this way though. The incentives were geared toward poor human discussion as well (c.f. reddit as a best case, and e.g. instagram/tiktok/youtube as what they'd like to be). So the problem here is ads, a desire to grow to include the entire world to show them ads, and a desire to do whatever it takes to keep their attention to show them ads.

"The sites that are there for ad impressions" are the websites, there's no invision powerboards in 2026, the alternatives have been gutted and eaten by the sites there for ad impressions. HN is an exceptionally poor replacement but it's the closest thing I've found. I don't enjoy that has the exact same dynamics as reddit but the ads are on pages I click through to instead of directly on the site, it sucks that I still don't recognise any usernames here.

By next week this thread might not have existed at all. The usership of the site likely won't remember it. If I was posting half the content on this site and then stopped and was replaced by another username, would anyone notice? It seems like there is no real community to be found, we've destroyed our own habitat.

Communication is a means to an end, a tool, not an end in itself, or something with intrinsic/unassigned value. Why would we want more energy wasted on focusing on the packaging (or worse, how the packaging is made) by drawing attention to it, instead of helping directing it towards that which actually matters?

I think is it the missing of human touch in writings that makes us think something as slop. Obviously, impersonating won't take one far I guess. One of the things I'm avoiding to use AI is for writing, because it is hard, enjoyable at the same time and is the only way for me to express what I think.

Side note but the multi-user cursors was a super cool feature, not sure it was relevant to this article but would love to see it on more interactive pieces (a la The Pudding, etc.)

There's a couple more things you can try.

If you limit the sample size, you end up finding more. For example, on my project when I tested 350 strings at once it failed to find 15 strings with "ai slop" that testing 10 strings at a time did find.

Is it still capable of writing an essay about AI writing tics or has the very means of producing said tics, even when the model is asked to do so to demonstrate, now abitterated?

Re:Show HN: Qwen3-4B with the AI writing tics trained out by mrweasel on Monday October 19, 2026 @10:05AM (#50152688)
The tell tell sign for me is that it's still incredibly hard to read. AI tend to write in a style that I'm unable to easily read (humans does that as well sometimes). I constantly have to go back and re-read the previous sentence, because the text simply doesn't register.

A next step I'd suggest is asking the LLM to use shorter words when available.

No, I have no wish to use LLMs to generate text for me. I would however be happy if those who do, would use models that generate more readable text.

LLMs as a word generator love generating words, and that includes generating bigger words when simpler ones will do.

I found the coffee shop one telling. Both suffer from being a stream of bland statements. The original version is actually reasonable if you just excise the Claude-isms. The rewrite has a whiff of ASD-STE100, and reads like the sort of sentences one would write for homework while learning a new language. There is also almost no difference between the de-slopped opinion piece and the blog post.

Its funny, even with the tics probably trained out of that blog post, my brain still turned off and skipped paying attention to it, automatically categorizing it as "AI slop".
Re:Show HN: Qwen3-4B with the AI writing tics trained out by Royce-CMR on Monday October 19, 2026 @09:55AM (#50152560)
Applause earned. Neat results especially out of such a small model.

Separately we have overlap between AI slop styles and right for the situation writing styles which this highlights.

Using the new CRM example, the clean version looks like a millennial student who rambled on a page, and the AI slop version looks like a draft I could send for PR to corporate managers. I buy the former looks more real, but it also looks sloppy and doesn’t work for most of my use cases.

When I was in school, the structured essay style of the “slop” examples was encouraged and I see it continue to resonate in corporate. The cleaned up versions here def have use cases - reviews for example.

Main point - different styles for different situations and our AI slop versions vs humanized versions both overlap different areas of the “ideal” we continue to look for.

It stil contains a triple construction, but ranks much cleaner on slop-cop.

In before: Goomba fallacy. But I can't notice how there's claims that: LLMs are nondeterministic and cannot be relied upon to produce the same thing AND they produce the same texts, same UIs, in the same styles. It frustrates me too, but what a solution for both problems would look like?

Also, if all LLMs would write in the style from the article, in how much time that would be the recognised LLM style people would get sick of? I suppose longer? But even the current style of LLMs was palatable when they first came out.

Re:Show HN: Qwen3-4B with the AI writing tics trained out by david2ndaccount on Monday October 19, 2026 @01:40PM (#50155400)
There’s no contradiction. Consider this thought experiment: the real range of possible outcomes is a number from 1-100, but your model is a six-sided die so it produces a number from 1-6. It is random, unpredictable and non-deterministic and yet you will get “samey” results compared to the real range of possible outcomes.
