Snap should be an extreme measure when there are no other means to use some obscure package that can't be run using the stock kernel or libraries. Resorting to it for common popular software is such a bad decision. I'm not a Ubuntu user as I rather prefer Debian and Manjaro; hopefully they'll never do the same.
Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by walrus01 on Saturday April 23, 2022 @07:04PM (#31139541)
snaps are one of a number of reasons why I'm moving away from an xubuntu based desktop to simply a base debian amd64 CLI-only install, then manually installing xorg+xfce4+misc things for a desktop environment that I really control.

there is simply too much extra crap launched from systemd (I don't have a problem with systemd, just all the extra ubuntu-specific stuff they've added as new daemons) and too many kinda-ubuntu-proprietary things shipped in xubuntu now.

Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by ASalazarMX on Saturday April 23, 2022 @09:31PM (#31140442)
I've been a very happy Ubuntu/Kubuntu user since more than a decade, but I'm seriously considering switching distros because the encroachment of snap, which I feel is not ready yet for such critical applications like Firefox.

I'm going to try 22.04 before deciding, but I'm eyeing Manjaro or Endeavor OS in case I jump ship. I'm also eyeing Qubes OS, but it looks needy and resource heavy.

I’m guessing Snaps are great for what they were designed. IOT devices.

They are good for server installations as well, except Docker/containers are almost always a better solution. Although the auto updating features make it a good solution for potentially creating self hosted services.

They’re just a terrible fit for the desktop. Unsurprising because they were never designed for the desktop.

Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by Snild on Sunday April 24, 2022 @02:34AM (#31141778)
Same here: Ubuntu was my first distro, and I've been using variants of it since 2006. This winter, I switched to OpenSUSE, with Ubuntu's insistence on pushing snap on me being the biggest reason.
Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by tasuki on Sunday April 24, 2022 @05:00AM (#31142335)
I share the concerns about snaps. Ubuntu was the first Linux distro I actually started using as my daily driver in 2005, and I've been using it ever since. At first I used to upgrade all the minor releases, these days I'm just on whichever LTS release. It's funny how over the years I know less and less about Linux. It just works.

Why have you chosen OpenSUSE and how has your experience been? I've been eyeing Debian, as it's pretty similar and I already have it on a server. My main concern with switching to a completely different distro would be that the packages are sometimes named differently.

Or I could switch to NixOS if I wanted things to be actually better, but the idea that I'd have to spend time nurturing my system just doesn't sound that appealing in 2022.

Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by Snild on Monday April 25, 2022 @01:15AM (#31150932)
I don't think I had any specific reason for picking OpenSUSE, at least none that I can remember. Their Tumbleweed rolling release seemed interesting to me.

As for the experience, I mostly like it. There is some re-learning to do (zypper not apt!), but the vast majority of things are the same. Since the distro isn't as popular, there are fewer asked-and-answered questions out there, but most Ubuntu answers work with minimal adaptation and the OpenSUSE wiki is pretty good.

Another downside of going non-Debian is that proprietary software may be less well-supported. I think I only have Steam and Spotify, and they have worked well so far.

I moved to pop_os for the same reason. I like the flatpak emphasis of it better as well.
Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by blacksmith_tb on Saturday April 23, 2022 @11:33PM (#31141081)
I am trying Pop! on an old laptop, so far I have liked it, though I am not sure flatpak is a silver bullet for FF either - I upgraded another equally ancient (circa 2010) laptop to Jammy and discovered that the Firefox snap couldn't even play videos without skipping and freezing. I thought I'd try flatpak instead, but it was nearly as bad, and eventually I blew away both and went the PPA route.
Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by thawaya3113 on Sunday April 24, 2022 @12:03AM (#31141200)
I don’t think there are any distros that are pushing Flatpak as the ultimate solution the way Ubuntu is snaps.

Ubuntu’s aggressive approach with snaps would have been bad enough if snaps were the perfect desktop app solution. It’s a lot more frustrating considering snaps are probably the 3rd best new packaging option behind Flatpak sand appimage.

Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by blacksmith_tb on Sunday April 24, 2022 @01:42PM (#31146300)
For sure, I do agree that Flatpak is better than Snap in general (and appimage works fine too, I guess its lack of a, uh, 'snappy' name for the format has kept it from getting as much mindshare...) In principle all three of them seem acceptable for apps I don't use much, or don't need maximum performance from, but for my main browser...
Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by usrn on Saturday April 23, 2022 @07:07PM (#31139559)
Debian is still Systemd based. If you want to get away from that you need something pretty bizarre like Alpine or Gentoo.
Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by chartreusek on Saturday April 23, 2022 @09:32PM (#31140447)
You can install a sysvinit based stock debian if you wish. I've done it a few times recently, on low memory systems (<512MB) it does make a noticeable difference. It's mostly supported in terms of running, though the install is a bit manual:

https://wiki.debian.org/Init

There's also instructions for converting a running system, but I've had no luck with that. It just resulted in an unbootable system for me as it couldn't fully remove systemd there.

Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by nu11ptr on Saturday April 23, 2022 @05:39PM (#31138858)
Agreed - I think it is weird a distro would do this. To me, these sorts of tools are reserved for app owners who want to make the trade off to hit more distros more easily with known trade offs. Distro owners have a full pkg management system and this should be integrated into that, like it was previously.
Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by stubish on Sunday April 24, 2022 @02:46AM (#31141822)
'hit more distros' also means hitting old distro releases. We have a laptop here running a nearly EOL LTS version of Ubuntu, but thanks to the snap packaging is still running the latest release of Firefox (the most important piece of software on this machine).

https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2021/09/ubuntu-makes-firefox-sna...

The reason probably being that for Canonical and Mozilla, it is a pain to support/backport multiple ubuntu versions, so why not just support 1 build.

It makes it simpler for them to release as it's directly integrated in their build system.

Considering how small a percentage linux users are, it isn't an illogical decision.

Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by GekkePrutser on Saturday April 23, 2022 @06:21PM (#31139199)
That's a highly commercial story they're telling there. It's all PR. I'd bet that it was canonical who approached Mozilla and offered compensation. After all Mozilla is always looking for money.

If offering a Deb is such a major issue for Mozilla, why are they still offering a distro-agnostic one that works just fine?

This whole story just doesn't make sense but fits in perfectly with Canonical's obsession with making snap a success.

Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by blihp on Saturday April 23, 2022 @09:50PM (#31140550)
Ubuntu has been looking for ways to differentiate themselves (and arguably lock users in) for many years and Snap is their latest go at it. Consider that Debian (i.e. Ubuntu's upstream) has been providing Firefox .debs for a very long time, so it takes effort not to offer .debs for it on a Debian derivative.
Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by siwatanejo on Saturday April 23, 2022 @10:44PM (#31140826)
Debian providing Firefox debs for a long time? I think you are very wrong because Firefox is not even called this way in Debian, it's IceWeasel.
Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by blihp on Saturday April 23, 2022 @10:52PM (#31140878)
Your information is outdated. It hasn't been called IceWeasel for a while now and that only had to do with a trademark issue[1] but it was still based on the Firefox sources. Source: running Firefox via .deb (firefox-esr in the Debian repo) on Debian stable to write this.

[1] IIRC, it had to do with using the Firefox name even though Debian was lightly modifying sources to remove a couple of things. This was resolved a while ago and the Firefox branding resumed.

Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by rubyist5eva on Sunday April 24, 2022 @10:31AM (#31144345)
Last time I tried Debian they only provided packages for the current ESR release - Canonical wants to provide the latest stable release.
Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by rubyist5eva on Saturday April 23, 2022 @06:36PM (#31139324)
Mozilla doesn't directly offer a .deb file. They offer precompiled binary tarballs for Linux. Mozilla doesn't make distribution specific packages as far as I am aware and it was Canonical that was packaging it for all of their supported distributions. It's less work for Canonical now to package Firefox, and Mozilla has more control over pushing updates so it's mutually beneficial for them.

Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by jethro_tell on Saturday April 23, 2022 @08:11PM (#31139988)
Not that many projects offer native .debs.

Most of that work is done by package maintainers that have an interest in the project and package the update for each release.

The projects that usually do make their own debs/rpms/whatever are usually backed by companies that have a strong interest in making their software easy to access. I guess mozilla should be in that group but they aren't.

MS releases full versions of code, Google Releases Chrome, you can get a terraform deb you can get neovim. Not really sure why FF doesn't release one but the way I understand it, FF is kinda back burner for Mozilla so who knows.

Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by jeroenhd on Saturday April 23, 2022 @09:06PM (#31140295)
Someone on the Mozilla team seems to distribute DEB files: https://launchpad.net/~mozillateam/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

Lots of projects seem to producing DEB files. I think they're the most common shared distribution format except for maybe PKGBUILD files for Arch.

Loads of projects have their own package repositories but cross distro distributions like Flatpak and Snap tend to be recommended before the docs refer to the repositories. The extra two or three clicks necessary to get the repository URL seem to make a big difference in popularity.

This.

If Mozilla was so keen on snaps of their own accord why wouldn’t they be pushing other distros to also pack it up as a snap and/or Flatpak.

Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by rubyist5eva on Sunday April 24, 2022 @08:27AM (#31143377)
Because other distros have different ideological reasons for packaging Firefox their way than Canonical. Fedora, for example, applies patches to Firefox before distributing their rpm.

Additionally, it is being done by the same folks who drive development of linux-specific features (like wayland support or video decoding acceleration) anyway.

Its so they can screw with it instead of just shipping what Mozilla released.

Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by vetinari on Tuesday April 26, 2022 @07:50AM (#31166316)
The "screwing with it" does not take much time.

Building the binaries themselves do. Mozilla does it few days in advance, so at the release they can push everything (and the binaries are available on the ftp.mozilla.org day before, uusually around 16:00 UTC). Other parties can start building their binaries only after the release.

In case of Fedora, it is pushed into the testing stream and only after positive feedback (or few days) it is pushed into the release. If you want it earlier, you can get the tested builds from bodhi (bodhi.fedoraproject.org). You can also see the status of all builds there.

I searched for a previous discussion: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23439326. The linked article is nonsense... and most of the comments are either just as nonsensical or they actually like snap. The one criticism I find is that it is slow. The other seems to be around the idea that Canonical controls it too much for some people to feel comfortable... but other than that, I don't get it.

Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by sliken on Monday April 25, 2022 @06:06PM (#31161360)
It's closed source on the server side, proprietary, and has various issues. I was pretty shocked when they forced it into a LTS release, and the implementation was not optional and was terrible. They handles upgrades poorly, polluted the mount space, required manually cleanup, and destroyed boottimes.

If you want containers, why would you go with a proprietary canonical technology instead of one of the better open source solutions? After all isn't one of the main promises of containers increased compatibility?

Even the ubuntu derivatives are switching away from snap.

Why would we have to accept something semi-privative being shoved down our throats?

I'm not going to accept Canonical behaving like Microsoft.

Being slow is a massive issue, it's not something be dismissed

Wasn't it Mozilla who wanted this general change, so they could provide more up-to-date versions more easily, and more directly?

That's Canonical's PR line. As someone working at Canonical during the discussions, I can tell you that's not true.

Someone's going to pay for snap's tech debt, and it sure isn't going to be Canonical!

Can you tell us what the real reason is? I'm very curious.

Linux Mint is my go-to distro. Polished and extremely stable.
Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by stormbrew on Saturday April 23, 2022 @07:40PM (#31139787)
Mint is based on ubuntu though isn't it? Looking around it looks like they balked at the Chromium snapification, but that's going to get more untenable as time goes on.
Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by gs17 on Saturday April 23, 2022 @08:32PM (#31140117)
By default you can't even install Snap on Mint. It's a simple change to allow it, but they seem pretty dedicated to avoiding it.

More stable than Fedora?
Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by dralley on Saturday April 23, 2022 @10:02PM (#31140605)
It's based on Ubuntu LTS so it changes less than Fedora does. Also it's not exactly cutting edge, for instance there's no support for Wayland because Cinnamon is based on a forked extremely old version of GNOME.

Which is fine, it does what people need it to do for now. Arguably it may fall further and further behind over time though.

It's a container not a vm so I don't think it would help if a package can't be run using the stock kernel.

My experience with Snap pqckages hasn't been great. For example the Snap version of 1password couldn't find my Yubikey, but the deb worked just fine.

I don't find them all that bad expect for the insanely slow startup times.

it's nuts to wait 20 seconds for a program to start up in 2022

Pop OS is removing some Snap stuff while still giving you everything Ubuntu does, plus more.

Canonical love making bizarre decisions like this. Just look at Unity and Mir.
Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by Darmody on Saturday April 23, 2022 @06:15PM (#31139161)
Unity made sense, snap doesn't.
Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by 2ion on Sunday April 24, 2022 @06:50AM (#31142852)
Snap makes sense, because it deals with desktop application confinement. Any Firefox process launched as $user is able to use all the RAM, read and write all the files, access all the networks and basically do everything as that user. You don't want that, it's stupid and so Windows 95.

There are alternative solutions: QubesOS uses VMs as the isolation layer, desktop application confinement using firejail with its good selection of profiles tweaked to my liking, systemd-run confinement configured through the vast resource control options made configurable through systemd. There is no reason ~ or even / shouldn't appear completely empty to Firefox the process except for the resources you pass to it (open file, grant download permissions...) or which it needs to run (of course, those would be immutable as far as possible). SELinux and AppArmor are child's play; you don't have a lot of problems of those tools if there are no objects a process could acceess in its namespace to begin with.

macOS I believe is already there in terms of desktop app confinement. Windows is not but at least it has the controlled folder access layer available after they gave up on making store apps meaningfully secure as its own app category (too many escapes/config tweaks possible now). Desktop Linux though has not had squat in that field in the mass market for 2 decades. Basically, you guys run all applications unconfined. Snap is a way to work on changing that.

Not saying though that the current implementation is exceptionally good. It's too slow, and they should have reused systemd or whatever for a thin, tweakable resource control and container layer, not invent a container format from scratch.

Yes unity wasn't bad and it wasn't shoved down your throat.

I mean it was the default environment on Ubuntu distros for years...I would say it was more forced than Snaps are.
Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by iiix on Saturday April 23, 2022 @11:21PM (#31141037)
I don't know if I'd agree; with Unity you could just install a new DE & switch environments without fuss.

My biggest problem with Snap is that trying to install something like Chromium via apt, will, most likely unbeknownst to the user, just install the Snap version instead.

Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by 2143 on Sunday April 24, 2022 @01:34AM (#31141539)
This.

I recently installed Chromium via apt, and it actually installed the snap!

I mean, if I wanted the snap I'll use the snap command. If it's not available via apt just say so and quit. I don't want it to install the snap version when I asked for the apt (.deb) thing.

In this particular case the means to the end matters.

Re:Firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 from .deb (not from snap) by rstat1 on Sunday April 24, 2022 @01:14PM (#31146006)
Well ok, maybe "forced" was the wrong word choice, but I would still say Unity was a more in-your-face change than Snaps are, since the vast majority of software on Ubuntu is still distribute via proper .deb packages
