News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

michaelmrose

This is generally the test of extreme stupidity because those so adept rarely realize there is even a contradiction because they lack in critical thinking.

You can separate Cook is a garbage person from the fact that he makes good stuff which quite frankly not an accomplishment insofar as it's the same trade-off virtually everyone makes. They aren't even contradictory you are simply weighing a trade off in moral outrage vs personal gain.

Which seems massively worse than a real local device in fact 2x is probably untenable to the point of uselessness because actually privacy sensitive matters need actual privacy that can't be defeated by your government telling Google to serve you compromised js and spy on you anyway and most people don't give 2 shits about privacy so they won't pay 10% more let alone 2x.

I'm glad people fund things that are only of interest to nerds but this will never be useful.

You lose rollbacks, superior syncing, redundancy and data integrity assurance and add complexity for what deceased ssd wear which is hardly an actual problem.
Instead of feeding the whole thing to chatgpt let's pick one item.

We tend to accept young earth creationism because perceptively it has little to do with everyday life doesn't hurt anyone and people are quite open about it. It also means that your brain is literally broken, you have no critical thinking skills and you are just the right sort to be manipulated by evil and end up building or guarding the concentration camps.

According to Gallup 95% of Republicans believe this at a strong majority 58% believe that the earth was quite literally created as is less than 10k years.

While this is magnificently stupid in and of itself it's not the problem it's merely a symptom of their disease.

They largely believe that dead kids aren't a reason to reign in guns, they believe climate change is a hoax, a cycle, or inevitable and won't do anything about it or let anyone else. They believe that us aid to poor nations was 10-15% of our budget and we just can't afford to not let kids starve when it was one-half of 1%. They believe that it may be necessary to use violence against the rest of us to maintain the status quo. They believe that we need an stong authorian to lead us democracy be damned, they believed that COVID was a scam until the corpses piled up or even after!

Here's a hilarious one. It's a graph of the percentage of the population which understood that COVID was worse than seasonal flu a march through April 2020. For Dems it goes from 74 to 87%. For Republicans it goes from 42 to 40 it actually drops whilst body count goes up.

https://news.gallup.com/poll/311408/republicans-skeptical-co...

They are magnificently staggering wrong on average about everything. We could go point by point and I could find polls for every single one because I'm basing my understanding of their position by reading their own words and polls by reputable sources like pew and Gallup.

The right Wing collectively has departed so entirely from reality that educated con artists must carefully contort their words to avoid their insanities and prejudice whilst fools spout forth with abandon uncaring.

In the US reality is substantially left of center. If someone asks you what 2+2 is then it's not halfway between 4 and 76 is it?

It's the majority position amongst Republicans that the Earth was created less than 10 years ago as is and Jesus may rapture all the believers in our lifetime. They believe childhood vaccines are dangerous and those over 30 favor the idea that being gay is a choice and immoral at that because they have no intrinsic idea of what right and wrong mean.

They believe Obama is a crypto Muslim born overseas and therefore somehow not a citizen despite citizenship being heritable.

They believe that the same ballots that elected Republican reps didn't represent a valid vote against Trump because it's unbelievable that folks voted against a pedophile in 2020.

Hell a 27 year crack addict is on TV alleging the Republican primary was stolen from him in a blue state and this is serious business in Republican Land.

The right wing has swung so far to the right that 2010 Republicans would be considered Left wing

It's not stealing but arguing that it's not infringement because its on the internet is pretty obviously nonsense.
Re:Stealing Reasoning Traces from Proprietary LLM APIs on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @01:48AM (#49268262)
If you already know the answer and everyone already knows the answer you asking this question is wasting everyone's time.
You ought to be able to back this up with sources other than trust me bro

Both can be negligent at once.
Re:A Sick People on Wednesday August 05, 2026 @10:31AM (#49183548)
About 30% are happy with a Nazi takeover of government with the stated goal of a whiter government and deportation and concentration camps. About 50% are ok with the idea of it if gas and groceries weren't so expensive. 65% if you specifically ask white men.

Many of the rest of us are aware of this and worried we won't be allowed to vote our way out of it. If that ends up being the case millions of us might die.

Of the 50% of us who didn't vote for this the overwhelming majority are cowards who won't do anything.

We aren't good people collectively. We are in a word garbage.

The only people in a position to show this are the idiots responsible for the current broken system. Deep analysis will have to come after regime change
sycophancy

It wasn't "better" it was better at kissing your ass which matches what a lot of people want in a partner.

Define insanely complex and deep in a way that isn't illiterate hand waving.

Most humans are dumber than a box of rocks. Here in Seattle we had one of many light rail-related fuckups where they had to replace part of the line with buses. People piled into the front of one when it was full. When people got out they never moved back. As the driver struggled to close the door and people struggled to get in the wad of people never moved back to fill the ample space.

Chatgpt was smarter than the average person a while ago

Can you explain why you need one machine never falling over ever instead of a cluster of machines never falling over at once collectively?
I have seen several because family members have owned them. They are nondescript black rectangles that are owned by cheap people and kids. There is no reason for you to notice them in particular and it's useful to remember our perception isn't a representative sample of anything.
It's not. It's an excellent example that economic value!= value.

Your facile dodge isn't an argument and suggests you lack one.

If we value things according to their monetary value we must conclude that Elon musk is more valuable than every teacher in Americas labor for the next decade. Economic value is oft divorced entirely from any notion of real value.

What you are describing derisively as "feels" is actually nuance the very essence of intelligence is not reducing complexity to tapioca.

Destroying the last copy of a rare book reduces the sum total of human knowledge even if its not one already of note.

Historically current thinking isn't the best and most accurate judgement of value. We cherish many works that were not notable upon publication or even in the author's lifetime.

Previously the works were distributed and hard to lose all at once now they are possibly inaccurately scanned and even that slightly lossy data may disappear all at once in a wave bankruptcy especially if the economy crashes again as seems to happen every 10 to 20 years.

I suggest you ruminate instead of patting yourself on the back

Re:Arch Linux disables AUR package adoption on Friday July 31, 2026 @03:34PM (#49127627)
For open source software it would be a massive increase in development time, difficulty, and continued costs that dwarf income to switch to the web. It would be shocking if it happened not the reverse. This is just for application software how do you replace installing a library or development tool with the web?

It's weird that installing software is weird to you.

Re:RFC 8890 – The Internet is for End Users (2020) on Thursday July 30, 2026 @03:49PM (#49114860)
Regulation is on average stunning effective. You simply complely fail to notice all the times it works, notice whenever it doesn't, and profess that it doesn't. There is no meaningful alternatives.
This is dumb. You need two teams ideally the same app or business in different markets for a business quarter.

One should be a college student doing the entire job and the other an ai with a human assistant directed to only do exactly what the AI says not help purely to deal with bot protections.

People are financing small consumer goods with 3 digit price tags because they can't afford their mediocre already leveraged life. They borrow high 4 to low 5 figures for a car because they can't get to work to earn money so they don't have to join the bums sleeping on the cardboard. They will not be borrowing high 5 figures to low 6 figures for Rosie the Robot.

If Rosie was the only output she would never happen. Rosie might happen as a side benefit of replacing American workers but only for the rich people.

The vast majority which may be replaced would probably be better off burning down the factory rather than celebrate their upcoming domestic helper.

I am extremely biased. I have an entire world view and like everyone else I tend to believe things that concur with what I already believe and reject things that are inconsistent correctly or incorrectly. For instance rejection of "mainstream media" is often correlated not with thoughtful analysis but rather with blatant anti-intellectualism common among right wingers.

Asking "are you a dumb conservative bigot" is offensive and shuts down dialogue even when the person wasn't. Better to ask for the fellow to expand on their comment

Let's pick one. Why is the BBC trash?
Re:Steel Bank Common Lisp version 2.6.7 on Tuesday July 28, 2026 @03:35PM (#49088821)
> The very power of Lisp, macros, dynamic programming, reflection lead to a mess of an ecosystem where every single developer reinvents the wheel and nobody can understand yet another DSL invented by the next developer next to them.

Have you like looked at anything in the Clojure ecosystem because this description makes no sense of any kind. Clojure has macros but less powerful than common lisp and Clojure code in the ecosystem tends to be small and understandable.

Infinite scroll is a shit pattern it creates complexity and makes it hard to get back to a position on the generated and changeable list. It can also be unexpected slow. Everyone knows a page load can be slow if their Internet is slow but a slow down when scrolling feels janky. If you think you need it you need pagination and more importantly better filters and search so users can find stuff easier without 200 options.
Every fake automated action should generate a real fine paid to the party they screwed over even when or if it's reversed.
Re:Ghost Cut – or why Cut and Paste is broken everywhere on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @05:29PM (#49013724)
Even windows has this software out of the box because it is so obviously useful
The original proposal was to use a visual hash designed to identify known bad CSAM images even if cropped or otherwise edited. Your computer would scan all your stuff for these images and report you to apple who would report you to the cops. This presented a number of issues.

Accidental false positives could lead to horrific outcomes up to and including oh look bob got shot by the cops for resisting.

It was possible to produce apparently matching innocuous images and then poison people's machines with them.Oops did you click on that picture of a tree have fun with the cops. Like an advanced form of swatting.

Although inspired by a desire to find CSAM Apple could be forced to scan for ANYTHING by repressive regimes including America and China.

Although initially targeting images client side scanning of messages is a pretty obvious next step. Again obvious good motivation exists and is completely justifiable who doesn't want to stop the next mass shooting or terrorist attack... and then we can basically use it to find people critical of the regime. Do remember we are presently prosecuting a political figure for a picture of sea shells and a guy in texas is rotting in prison for distributing political literature.

I want a back button and a button to the left with a double arrow back like Rewind and for the browser to maintain both a buffer of prior pages and one at least as long of prior root sites with right-click showing this list
The actual study is more circumspect than this click bait and examines pretty deliberately how people respond to inaccurate data. It's neither a trick nor a design flaw. It's literally the thrust of the study.
