News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Why was there no one left to speak for you. Did the AI apocalypse actually happen and it is just you and a rack running an instance of "Claude" left on earth?
This sort of action is the only way other countries will take the dependency on US controlled services seriously.

Keep screwing over scientists, please OpenAI, eventually it will wake up the lazy institutions in Europe (and other places).

If they just stand by and let it happen, they deserve to be made fools of.

Pretty sure Elon will have a hot take on Twitter. That should make it "hacker" related.

They certainly have more affect on our lives than any "traditional" god. Apparently, reducing their tax exposure brings 10 years of good harvest.
Re:Amazon's "Digital Pacifier" for Toddlers on Sunday October 25, 2026 @08:02PM (#50237287)
You can do whatever mental gymnastics you need to justify parenting decisions. But a static device located in a common area in the home is no comparison a device that follows a child everywhere which they stare at alone.

The content of TV was also vastly different. There was a barrier to entry, not an infinite stream of brainrot content.

There is just no reason to give kids such devices at a young age, far better learning experiences exist until at least 9 years old.

My wife was worried our son would be "left behind". We talked about it and I pointed out he can already navigate photos, and Spotify to play an audio book; from just looking over our shoulders every now and then. Must be around 5 hours interaction in total (he is 4).

Poking a screen is barely a skill, less than a day and he would be caught up to all the kids that had been staring at one for hours a day since they were 3.

Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Thursday October 22, 2026 @05:53PM (#50201583)
I think people just don't like change, and the minor inconvenience turns it into something to moan about. Along with it being on trend to be cynical about everything.

If we just finger point nothing gets done. Yes, industrial fishing destroys the oceans in more ways that one, but that is a global problem, and global consensus on anything is in short supply at the moment.

Probably the best thing to do in the case of fishing waste is to stop eating fish (or pick the source very carefully). That might be an inconvenience as well though...

Re:Jailbreaking the Switch 2 on Thursday October 22, 2026 @10:20AM (#50195751)
You can pay for them if you appreciate the effort that went into making the game. Nothing to stop you buying the Switch cart and playing an emulated version.

I agree in principal, but what is it with the plastic straws thing?

That was never about climate change that I am aware of. It was about pollution, same with plastic bags.

Plastic is a curse on the environment, especially the single use plastic that goes directly in the bin and into landfill or the oceans. Eventually it ends up in the food chain as microplatics.

Do we not want to reduce plastic pollution now? OK, maybe straws are fraction of the plastic pollution created, but surely every little bit helps?

People moan because it is a regular minor incovience to their life. If society can't get over something so trivial we are fucked.

Re:Publish fake stats, get cited in LLMs on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @11:31AM (#50167928)
Web search is pointless for certain topics now, if you don't want LLM filtered information. The first few pages of results are obvious slop.
Re:Ukraine claims first drone evacuation of wounded soldier on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @05:00AM (#50163212)
The Russians certainly read their war propaganda textbooks. They have that list well covered.
Re:Ukraine claims first drone evacuation of wounded soldier on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @04:42AM (#50163058)
If Ukraine was carrying out offensive actions at the same rate as Russia I might agree. But they are defending and slowly loosing territory apart from specific areas where Ukrainian offensive actions have an outsize strategic effect.

Are you suggesting that by defending 95% of the front line Ukraine has the SAME losses in manpower as Russia which is carrying out offensive actions over probably 40-50% of the front line?

Re:RPKI now protects 70% of internet routes on Friday October 16, 2026 @07:15AM (#50116984)
I love wading through LLM prose!

I know its a tired point, but why not publish the bullet points that were the source for this text as well. I'd rather read those.

Getting another LLM to summarise back to something concise just seems wrong.

Yeah OK, this comment proves my point if it ever needed to be. We are all sick to death of American "politics" I gaurentee that.
Re:Switzerland proposes banning profiling-based ads to minors on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @10:33AM (#50088352)
Or they just go to their friends who's parents don't give a shit and fill up on brainrot there. Or probably even at school.

You can't raise your kids in isolation. Society raises them, if society says it is OK to feed kids Tiktok brainrot before they are 14/16/whatever age it will happen. To your kids as well.

This is exactly what government is for. Solving problems like this universally.

Re:Switzerland proposes banning profiling-based ads to minors on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @10:28AM (#50088286)
I'd guess they know there is no chance of any push back from Trump, so they are around half way through 4 years of zero regulation change, and are making the most of it. Isn't Kushner or one of them invested?

Won't someone think of the smartphone addicted adults!
Re:Amazon pushes up prices across the Internet on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @09:30AM (#50087507)
Your nearest hardware store is 45mins away and you dont have the tools on hand to fix a toliet?
Re:AI is a tool and using it well takes skill on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @07:06AM (#50085749)
Its like listening/watching vs. reading.

Are you suddenly a history expert because you listened to every Hardcore History podcast? Better to read 1 book on a subject than listen to hours of podcasts. I gaurentee more is remembered from the book.

The social media content about the UK in America must be "wild". You guys are obsessed.
The deranged Orange Idiot and the bloodthirsty War Criminal are the ones carrying out what you describe. The rest of "the West" wants nothing more to do with them, and is currently attempting to avoid all the knives heading for their backs.

Monolithic indeed.

Yandex is a part of Russia's military. Just the same as Google, MS, Amazon etc. provide services for the US military. Google et al. are probably in the critical path of defence for most European countries as well, insane though that is.
Re:OpenAI Withdraws 3 Math Papers on Thursday October 08, 2026 @10:48AM (#50006481)
If corporations didn't exist and we all sang kumbaya the world would be a better place, but that's not going to happen is it.
Try saying something against Israel with that famous American free speech.
They meddle in other countries politics more than Russia. They are an adversary to everyone except themselves. Explains a lot really...
Patents just embed western monopolies and cost everyone except the sovereign wealth funds and private equity that own everything in the west.

Someone has to tear it down, and it's not going to come from within. No balls on this side.

Facts and experience mean nothing when everyone knows you are a liar.
You can't control the water cycle over a datacenter and its water source, it is a global system.
Re:In Ukraine, distributed renewables foil Russia's assaults on Sunday October 04, 2026 @09:25AM (#49953735)
On "greenwashing". As the article said, the environmental aspect is at the bottom of Ukraine's list of concerns at the moment.

This is the most concrete evidence (if it wasn't clear to anyone not lobotomised by the fossil fuel industry propaganda already) that renewable energy is a sovereign asset, not an external risk like shipping gas and oil round the world from mostly western-hostile nations.

Ukrainians are fighting for their country and this is the route they take. Any government not doing that same is deliberately weakening their country.

But check the position of supposedly nation-first right wing political parties in the west and they all LOVE making their country energy dependent on Saudi Arabia or the US, or Russia. I wonder why that could be...

Hey now, setting a timer or playing a podcast without unlocking your phone is important!

The US Gov can just ask, and American corporations will deliver. No need to get their hands dirty.
