I have not and did not intend to, but you made me curious. Why should I not listen to it?
I suspect it's coal lobby sponsoring "green" iniviatives. Then the "green" initiatives sponsored by coal are anti-nuclear.
Re:Jepsen: ParticleDB 1.1.4 on Saturday October 31, 2026 @04:50PM (#50320068)
Why did you pay Aphyr to find all these holes in ParticleDB? Didn't you know about them before? I wish you the best, but this doesn't sound reassuring.
Re:Pico CSS is no longer maintained on Friday October 30, 2026 @08:01AM (#50302763)
Yes it is a pain. But the whole thing is like two pages, so I^H my LLM just reads it. I used to read it. It was ok readable (and I'm not very good at CSS).
Re:Ask HN: Are you tired too in this AI era? on Friday October 30, 2026 @07:44AM (#50302640)
I don't use Claude but this is the first time I hear someone say it's combative. People usually joke about it being too sycophantic.
Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Friday October 30, 2026 @06:36AM (#50302104)
That's a problem with everything (apart from firearms perhaps). I think backyard gold is a solid idea, just make sure no one's watching you dig.
Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Friday October 30, 2026 @06:34AM (#50302085)
The whole idea behind Bitcoin is that you can be your own bank. Binance is just an exchange. You cannot be JP Morgan Chase.
Re:Pico CSS is no longer maintained on Friday October 30, 2026 @05:42AM (#50301649)
Despite its idiotic naming, I still use PureCSS[0]. Not sure why they keep maintaining it. I don't mind, nothing ever seems to change anyway.

How's your ten second evaluation of it?

Re:Pico CSS is no longer maintained on Friday October 30, 2026 @05:37AM (#50301611)
I'm pretty sure I'd hate Tailwind, but please leave OKLCH alone. It is actually ok (as opposed to RGB and HSL which very much aren't ok).
Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @02:25PM (#50278588)
> Does anyone use/like touch on their windows (linux?) laptops?

Sometimes I use it in Linux. Sometimes it makes my system freeze, requiring a hard restart. Perhaps it would be wise to disable it in BIOS.

Re:Two high-speed trains collide near Toledo, Spain on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @11:43AM (#50275555)
It is a tragedy that 60+ people died. Laughs can be a coping mechanism.

> Distasteful and totally crass.

That's culture-dependent. In some cultures it's not unusual to joke about tragedies (even when they are one's own).

> I refuse to take a repo with an AI-generated readme seriously. If you haven't bothered to write a readme, what else have you not bothered to do?

I care whether the readme is any good, not who wrote it. If you haven't bothered to critique the readme and instead critique its suspected creator — something entirely in your head — what else have you not bothered to do?

> (100% AI according to Pangram btw)

So what? Who cares about Pangram? I certainly don't! You cannot detect AI — it's impossible. Perhaps it's just Kenyans?[0]

> I compared to a 10-year old CNN and to my surprise found that this was superior.

I'm surprised he's surprised.

> A small, old, specialised network using an outdated architecture recognises skin lesions far better than two frontier LLMs.

Yes of course. A 30m params Katago network with one playout is superhuman in playing go, while frontier LLMs have over 10,000 times more parameters and aren't any good at playing go. They're good at other things (such as helping you create a network that's good at playing go).

This is why I read https://hckrnews.com/ top 20 - things like this stick there. Also feeds me less noise and requires less F5 than the ever-changing HN homepage :)
> Have a look at your log file

Surely it doesn't take a very sophisticated attacker to clean up after themselves at least a little bit?

> from attacks powered by every single mainstream agentic AI

Is it so bad? Have you measured the number of attacks?

> So without the HN discussion I wouldn't have found enough people pointing at possible mitigations and I would have lost a server to this

I run a tiny server. I like this server a lot. I only patched an hour after the Debian package was ready and didn't think about it again. Do you mean to imply there's a real chance my little server has been compromised?

[Edit:] My server is quite public too. It hosts four SLDs and many subdomains and receives both human and bot traffic. Only one or two subdomains use PHP, but a reasonable attacker surely tries all of them.

> my guess at a developer's Tuesday in 2031

Hey that was about my last Tuesday.

In 2031 you single-handedly maintain 173 million lines of code making up a simple crud app. You're a good programmer, but the previous guy wasn't, and now there's too much code to make it any smaller. Not even your vastly superhuman LLM feels confident to delete any of the code. So the two of you slog along, keeping the thing alive.

Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @08:34AM (#50179854)
As much as I agree climate change is an important topic, I hate the rhetoric of "irreversible changes". Of course they're irreversible! Change is the only constant.

> the tension between open to everyone, not seeing people as "bad" or enemies, versus the reality that some people can be mean, heartless, etc., and it's ok to avoid them.

I don't think there's tension in what you're saying: Yes it's very much ok to avoid people when they're being mean, heartless, etc. At the same time that doesn't mean they're "bad" or enemies.

Re:Revolut down as users report app not working on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @08:02AM (#50165007)
Yes they did, and so did mrkeen!
The shorter middle line gives it a completely different character. Comparing how many pixels are different is meaningless.

I will not voluntarily look at Comic Sans, but thank you for the recommendation!

The `m` is wonderful!
Eg the `m` is much different: it has the wonderful short middle descender, taken from Ubuntu Mono.

Your comparison says the `m` is 28% different. It's completely different. I don't know what the 28% is supposed to represent (yes, the difference in the area taken, but that's meaningless).

Re:It's still OK to enjoy programming on Monday October 19, 2026 @03:50PM (#50157176)

Yes of course. But sometimes, when no one is watching, you can quickly sneak a peek at the code changes. It's ok!

Re:DeepSeek: DeepSeek v4.1 Flash 1017 on Saturday October 17, 2026 @03:23PM (#50134217)
There are many reasons why your test suite shouldn't take >5m to execute. This is just one of them.
Re:DeepSeek: DeepSeek v4.1 Flash 1017 on Saturday October 17, 2026 @11:23AM (#50131919)
What is the reason for this? Surely running tests by itself isn't necessarily token-expensive? And it provides cheap feedback for the agent: to see whether they're breaking things.
How do you know it's AI-written? Perhaps a human just used AI style, no?
Re:Redesigning Source Control at Anthropic on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @04:18PM (#50078055)
It is a terrible thing. Yes, one generally has a place which is the source of truth. But distributed still gives you offline commits and branching and all the good things, for free.
Re:Redesigning Source Control at Anthropic on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @04:16PM (#50078010)
I think it is exactly the right way to create problems.

I'm sure the system is being constantly updated and will get more and more bloated over time and interesting things will start happening.
