the first comment says "no tolerance for anyone that doesn’t think, act, look, and live exactly like he does" which is quite funny when you think about the fact that if you disagree with any of aspect of the insanely pervasive liberal ideology, you are immediately ostracized based on the fact that you do not you don't "think, act, look, and live exactly like" and get inundated with a plethora of dumb shit using "phobic" and "ist" as a suffix
Re:Pentagon Influencer Called Liberal Women 'Pestilence' Who... by perching_aix on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @06:24AM (#49906848)
And if one dares to mention that this kind of dogmatism is pervasive across the political spectrum, and so that that first comment is quite literally correct then despite its irony, then that's a "both sides" thing, and therefore just cope.

It's entertaining sometimes, but man, is it ever depressing too. Good thing the speech is free though... (not that e.g. curtailing dogmatic speech wouldn't be just a treating of symptoms)

Your whole argument collapses when you notice the far right hates people for what they are and cant change, such as their sex or race, and the far left hates people for what they choose to be, such as racist, egoistical, violent...

"Hating women" and "hating people who hate women" are the same "hate" only if you are a shallow thinker who stays at the surface of things and takes words at their face value.

Re:Pentagon Influencer Called Liberal Women 'Pestilence' Who... by perching_aix on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @08:33AM (#49907984)
Conflating the underlying types of hate is not my intention (nor is conflating the moral character and mental state required to hold either views), what I'm saying is that both of these far-off crowds are genuinely insufferable, damaging to public discourse, and that their justification for being insufferable only goes so far.

You may find their justification to wash one of these sides, but that doesn't collapse jack about my "argument", we just disagree then. Sorry to hear this makes me a shallow thinker in your opinion, unfortunately, gonna have to disagree about that one too.

I did not put forward any arguments by the way, I stated opinions and an anecdote.

Re:Pentagon Influencer Called Liberal Women 'Pestilence' Who... by Arodex on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @09:48AM (#49908927)
I really don't understand people who put being polite and cordial before everything. And honestly, it reeks of "I am not directly affected by it, therefore I don't want to engage with it". "Why can't we be nice with people who call liberal women pestilence that will end civilization?" Clearly you're not a women in the military whose career (or basic safety from sexual assault) may be affected by these guys. But let's not be "insufferable" here, right?
Re:Pentagon Influencer Called Liberal Women 'Pestilence' Who... by perching_aix on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @10:14AM (#49909294)
Because being inflammatory is seriously distracting. It derails people's thoughts and behavior, and distorts their underlying positions over time, radicalizing them.

Consider our very own conversation. According to your very own words, you cannot help but extrapolate that I must be uncaring of women's sexual abuse, and have a lack of experience with sexual abuse myself. Your moral investment is clearly high in this, naturally meaning this is a sensitive subject for you, and that you are thus trying to establish friend from foe. I can very easily appreciate that, but consequently, it'd be hard to fault me if I went along for the ride, and took serious offense at what you just wrote. I don't think I need to explain why.

But this is no way to have a conversation. And indeed, people who are so amped up are rarely using their words for conversation. It's more of a torment nexus they unleash on those they find to be deserving of it. Surely, if you just accuse your conversation partner with one more blatantly objectionable hyperbole, they'll see the error in their ways (they won't, they'll just get even more amped up and radicalized instead).

Whether such perversion of discourse is acceptable to you, ultimately up to you. I'm a bit surprised you'd be in such disbelief why it's not so for others, however.

This is also reflected in political discourse. A common trope I encounter recently is "they'll tell you you're a monster but not that you're wrong". Indeed, things rarely fall into one category. How hurtful and how true something is are different axes that both exist. Would be awfully cool though if people didn't amp up the hurtfulness factor for funsies, based on whatever arbitrary moral justifications, then act coyly surprised when that's what takes focus. Or were at least candid about having done so.

Re:Pentagon Influencer Called Liberal Women 'Pestilence' Who... by Arodex on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @02:18PM (#49912455)
Good for you if you suffered sexual assaults and still want to have a cordial conversation with those being fine with it. Very high levels of quasi-christic compassion and forgiveness. I can only admire that.

Do you really need to call those who don't "insufferable" though ?

And what conversation do you expect to have when those who feel fine putting down women are promoted to positions of power and laws and rules are currently being changed to the latter's detriment? "Hey, I want to talk, please answer."

Reading how you write, it seems all so intellectual, "open for debate", for discussion. What you seem to miss is that the debate already happened during the last decades (with an "s"), and that one side has realized they lost that rational debate, and refuses to engage anymore. Global warming was only the template (or maybe creationism was), and now there is no debate to be had with regards to trans rights, women's rights, minorities rights, or even if election results have to be respected. The far right found the way out of "losing the argument": they don't even engage.

Just see yesterday senator (senator!) Schmitt falsely accusing Jack Smith of perjuring himself and conspiring with Fani Willis, and calling him a "dipshit". Just one basic problem: Schmitt mixed up the Atlanta Hawks with the Iowa Hawkeyes. How did Schmitt react to being corrected on the spot by Klobuchar? Debate and discussion? Nope. Did he correct himself afterwards? Nope, he went to the Charlie Kirk show and doubled down on that basic mistake - turning it willfully into a bare-faced lie. Did Fox news mention any of this? Nope. There is no debate.

(And Schmitt is not only a senator but first in line to become VP for Vance's presidential ambitions. He is not a third-rate nobody I am picking on to unduly slime the right in general: he is a major political representative.)

Meanwhile you have little to offer than getting punched repeatedly in the face by people who will double down when you do not fight back. You are, in my opinion, "fighting the last war".

It may seem very pessimistic and it is. The USA was on the way to a(n un)civil war. The only thing that is saving you currently is the haplessness of Trump, causing pain to everyone equally due to his economic and military ineptness, turning everyone against him. But without that shared pain, half of US voters (amplified by a voting system biased toward conservatives) would have been fine with all the subjugation of women and non-white people, and they are not interested in any good faith "discussion" on those topics.

Re:Pentagon Influencer Called Liberal Women 'Pestilence' Who... by perching_aix on Thursday October 01, 2026 @01:49PM (#49924821)
> Good for you if you suffered sexual assaults and still want to have a cordial conversation with those being fine with it.

I mean, to clarify, I rarely find myself wanting to have a conversation about sexual assult, conversation type nonwithstanding. I also don't really come across people who would be genuinely "okay with sexual assault". But if I am going to have a conversation, I'd indeed appreciate that to not be like the aforementioned. Not that I'd think there's much to discuss per se, nor was this the actual topic of this subthread. Instead, it was rhetorics in political speech.

> Do you really need to call those who don't "insufferable" though ?

Yes, I do believe I do, because that is my genuine impression. There may be kinder ways to put it, so in a sense, I might be falling victim to this myself when I say such a thing, especially given various contexts. But then I am indeed not superhuman in any way (not in my compassion, not in my forgiveness, and certainly not in my Christianity). I just happened to find this to be the salient bit over time, among other reasons.

A kinder way to put it might be to highlight how this behavior I'm referring to is invariant to these political (politicized?) topics. Instead, I regard it as a matter of feeling really intensely about something, and that not being understood and appreciated by others. An act of desperation. And just like in any other situation when a person becomes highly motivated, the tools and goals involved become increasingly perverted, sometimes to the point of unrecognizability, or even their outright inverse. The topic doesn't even need to be moral. With enough pressure, this same process tends to invite self-identity into the picture, and then morality naturally gets dragged in. Strictly speaking, it's not even out of nowhere: if people really did think like I do, about all the things I recognize as crucial w.r.t. to the topic at hand, they would arrive at the same conclusions. Therefore, their failure to do so means their evilness and stupidity is tautological. Note the circularity of this however.

I think recognizing this kind of dynamic on oneself and others is thus self-evidently genuinely very important, and that failing to do so has severe consequences. I'm also frankly burned out over it, having read comment sections absolutely full of this for decades, which is almost certainly what's driving this for me, rather than any kind of superhuman goodness or intelligence. I have further also experienced the damaging effects of extrapolating too hard, and have been treated poorly by others extrapolating too hard. It really is just shitty. Unfair as it may be, holier than thou as it may sound, unbelievable as it may come across, acting hostile really does just suck. It does not lead to a faithful understanding of one another, the lack of which is the whole reason for this dynamic arising imo to begin with. Being understood being a gift, not a given, does not help. It's a genuinely painful hand to be dealt at times, but that doesn't mean a race to a rhetorical bottom is a sound idea.

There's a lot more to this, mostly abstract, like how the internet I think is fundamentally boosting this by virtue of people from all walks of life being mixed together, who will inevitably be going (and not going) through very emotionally involved things, this being weaponized for (political) clout, or how I think there are fundamental theoretical limits involved with how much we can understand one another, and how fair we can and should be with one another. But I think we got way off of the wrong foot, and most of what I wrote was fairly abstract as is, so that probably wouldn't be any more compelling.

You'll just have to take my word for it that this really does bother me across the spectrum, put a pin on it, then see if you'll ever find it in any way relatable.

Re:Pentagon Influencer Called Liberal Women 'Pestilence' Who... by Arodex on Thursday October 01, 2026 @07:21PM (#49928182)
Thank you for your thoughtful response. I will meditate on that.

Just one point you made I can answer right now:

>It does not lead to a faithful understanding of one another

...Is that true, or is the raw, emotional, intense response the true, "faithful" nature of people? I find it more and more likely that the internet doesn't as much radicalize than free people to be their true, worst self, by giving them the justification to act it out. I think a lot about how civilization can be superficially nice.

A lot has been made of the progress since Jim Crow and yet it just took a gaudy clownish reality TV Star to see people feeling free to finally express their hatred of all that progress and wanting to subjugate back women and brown people. That is what they finally feel "safe" to say out loud.

Re:Pentagon Influencer Called Liberal Women 'Pestilence' Who... by perching_aix on Saturday October 03, 2026 @10:56AM (#49944864)
What I was referring to there has less to do with the idea of there being a "real" person under the facade(s), and more with this notion I have where in order to fully understand another person, you'd have to become them. This is predicated on another notion where everything is connected to some extent, however insignificantly. The end result of this is:

- you cannot ever fully understand another person (would require you to be two people at once)

- a person cannot ever fully understand oneself (at best it would require a complete structural periodicity of thought)

- even if an understanding appeared complete, given the right context or sufficient time, it'd decohere (would require you to live (and have lived) their life and yours simultaneously)

This does have downstream effects on the idea of there being such a thing as a real person under the hood, but on its own this is not sufficient for exploring that I'd say.

For the record, I kind of both agree and disagree with the claim. It is of course possible to extract stable internal features by empirical probing, like conversations in various contexts, and it is entirely possible that some features remain stable enough for a lifetime, and for the person to interact with them in a stable way for a lifetime. But whether these really form a person on their own, one that is consistent, I'm not so sure. It also feels a bit shaky and convenient that they'd cleanly map to high level features like racism.

To tie this back to your concrete example, are those people acting like that because they're showing their true colors, or are they acting like that because they think that's what gives them social approval? If the latter, that'd mean that rather than them showing their true colors, the colors they're showing are actually more false than normal. And I don't mean this in the sense that the racist TV show host isn't actually racist, but why he is racist, and how that came to be, and how he keeps being that way. Is he racist or a people pleaser, who then in a sense "contracted" racism?

If the same person lived a different life in in a different culture, would they still be racist? If they really do have a base personality trait that makes them so, they'd have to be, but that's not really what we're seeing. Instead, this is a lot more culturally and historically modulated.

I remember watching a short documentary on Taiwan's youth and what their academic interests are. I pretty much laughed out loud when the host described it as most students having a profound interest in semiconductor manufacturing. Well isn't that a great and specific coincidence? Place with world leading semiconductor manufacturing plants having tons of youth interested in exactly that?

well clearly your hate is morally superior and thus you're justified in your hate opposed to another because you're a brilliant thinker, right? regardless you saying that those who are far right hate people for something they can't change is just as funny as that first comment in the article, because for example, phrases like 'assigned male at birth' which is literally someone born as male then cosplaying a female. how is that someone who is "what they are and cant change"? i can personally find that to be revolting but it doesn't change reality. here is a good way for your big brain to understand it, say a far left person wearing a bunch of pride badges gets attacked in public for no apparent reason, you will still see a far right person assist in defending the individual they fundamentally disagree. now reverse the roles and say a far right person wearing a MAGA hat gets attacked in public for no apparent reason, and you will see the far left person assist in the attack. i might not agree with what you say but i will defend your right to say it, but the same sentiment seems to be lost on the opposite side of the political isle, they would instead celebrate and advocate violence against the other side "for what they choose to be"
Re:Pentagon Influencer Called Liberal Women 'Pestilence' Who... by tavavex on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @09:45AM (#49908891)
Yes. They are saying that hating people for what they choose to be is better than hating people for what they are. Your point being?

Being trans is what you are, it has never been an open choice like how I can choose to associate with a different political party. If people could freely choose what gender they felt like without any mental distress or anguish involved, nearly no one would be trans because it is a massively repressed and limiting position in society, where a good chunk of the world population displays the emotional stability of a rabid bulldog when thinking about them. I could feel your fists clench through the text, especially when you think about only MtFs - a sign of very rational and stable views about gender roles.

Your example is just "let me tell you how good I imagine my side is, and how bad I imagine your side is. Not feeling so smart now huh?". Most far-rightists have no qualms about suppressing the other side if you look at how their societies act, from hyper-religious dictatorships to corrupt populist democracies. It's the right that's the most easily united under hatred, while the left is infamous for infighting and constant drama because they disagree on the minutia of some idea. A lot of the right can accept anything from a theocracy to the death of democracy if what they think gets instated. They do not care about anyone's rights or wellbeing. Maybe some on the regular right would disagree with some of these things, but not anyone who's deep into extreme ideology.

Re:Pentagon Influencer Called Liberal Women 'Pestilence' Who... by rikki3 on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @09:51AM (#49908972)

>well clearly your hate is morally superior and thus you're justified in your hate opposed to another

Uh, yes? And you prove my point? Because when you give this scenario:

>say a far left person wearing a bunch of pride badges gets attacked in public for no apparent reason, you will still see a far right person assist in defending the individual they fundamentally disagree

Then the far-right person will earn my respect, not my hate, because it defended the basic dignity of someone attacked for what they are. We could even start a conversation on why they helped someone they think is a "pervert abomination" that "destroys civilization". See, I don't hate the far-right guy for things he can't change about himself, but for his beliefs and hurtful actions at this point in time. The second he stops being hurtful, I have no reason to hate him anymore.

Whereas for the guys who hate women/black people/brown people/Jews etc..., you can't do anything to change for the better, except cease to exist, either by physically dying, or socially dying aka. becoming subhuman/noncitizen.

>regardless you saying that those who are far right hate people for something they can't change is just as funny as that first comment in the article, because for example, phrases like 'assigned male at birth' which is literally someone born as male then cosplaying a female. how is that someone who is "what they are and cant change"? i can personally find that to be revolting but it doesn't change reality.

How exactly are you personally affected by "someone born as male then cosplaying as a female"? You find it revolting but why should you care about their private choices who affect only themselves? Why do you feel you have to interject and meddle and attack? The only "obligation" you may have is to call them by a different pronoun than the one you would like to use. Is that such a "violence" that you feel justified in hating them and denying them rights, job promotions, fighting for their country (voluntarily!) and going to a water closet? Do you feel also violence by basic politeness like when you have to tell someone ugly they are looking rather nice?

Re:Pentagon Influencer Called Liberal Women 'Pestilence' Who... by rikki3 on Thursday October 01, 2026 @02:46AM (#49918476)
i am not personally affected in any capacity by trans gender individuals, nor do i hate them, i just find those people to be rather strange and don't want their public displays of indecency to be witnessed by children. if I saw a trans gender person being attacked by someone wearing a MAGA hat, i will aggress upon the attacker in defence of them, regardless of if that attacker shares some of my own beliefs, he clearly doesn't share my belief in a civil society. i extend that same sentiment of protection to any person regardless of who they might be. if someone hates a person for being women/black people/brown people/Jews etc then they are just fucked in the head and heart. i think you might be confusing my disgust with their personal choices for hate, but say a bill was proposed that would directly and harmfully impact the life of someone i disagree with, i would vote against that. i don't want people having a hard life. now say a bill was proposed to grant additional rights to the trans gender individuals which begins to erode rights and spaces specifically designated for the female sex, then those trans genders are not seeking equality and that too, i would vote against. clearly compassion is viewed differently by both sides too, since you believe it to be compassionate to tell a trans gender women that he is a women. i believe it to be compassionate to tell trans gender women that he is a man. no other self generated belief someone has about themself are affirmed except for gender...

I am sorry, but I can't discuss with someone holding incoherent beliefs. You can't say you find someone revolting and that you don't hate them; you are contradicting yourself. You say you aren't personally affected and then say how they affect you personally. Sort yourself out.

>say a bill was proposed that would directly and harmfully impact the life of someone i disagree with

Like being seen in public?

>i don't want people having a hard life.

Trans people are some of the most assaulted people there is right now. You want a trans women to be forced to use men's toilets, where they will be insulted, groped, spit on, punched, and assaulted. You are not the benevolent person you think you are. Face it! Talk with trans people and see how out of touch you are.

They are men, so this is what they should be using. Or unisex facilities if available.

> where they will be insulted, groped, spit on, punched, and assaulted

The prospect of male-on-male violence, or the rhetorical fantasy of it, is no reason to permit males to impose themselves upon female spaces.

Re:Pentagon Influencer Called Liberal Women 'Pestilence' Who... by rikki3 on Friday October 02, 2026 @02:07AM (#49930296)
just because i find something to be disgusting does not mean i hate it. if i see a poo on the ground when i am walking down the street i find that disgusting but i don't hate the poo, the dog or the owner. perhaps events beyond my understanding occurred leading to the disgusting display on the street but nowhere is hate present in my mind nor heart. there is a very close correlation between disgust and hate but no causation so you're fair in your assumption but i don't concede that disgust causes hate. trans gender women (biological males) should use the men's toilet, yes. places like toilets and locker rooms only need a male and female because we split those based on sex, not gender. those are places which were split due to the (major) physical differences between our sexes, so why would i allow a man with an incongruence between his mind and body to enter the area where i let my daughter or niece enter to conduct their private business? he is welcome to use the gents with the rest of us and again, if he is actually assaulted then me and/or most other men are going to assist in the defence of his physical safety instead of mindlessly joining in on an assault of someone because he made the decision to look as freaky and disgusting as possible.

It is not, because it comes from different impulses. Males (cis males if we're being specific) chudpost because they (we) are entitled babies who are not used to any sort of pushback and therefore any attempt at even the most timid of equality feels like an attack on the foundations of masculinity. I believe you are observing Popper's Paradox of Tolerance. It is indeed the correct course of action to not tolerate those who do not tolerate people who don't "think, act, look, and live exactly like" them. The first group that does not tolerate others immediately justifies intolerance against them.

"Slap down anybody who says anything off-message" — Karl Popper

The actual quote goes "... for it may easily turn out that they are not prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument, but begin by denouncing all argument; they may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because it is deceptive, and teach them to answer arguments by the use of their fists or pistols." It seems relevant to ask whether that incitement to respond to arguments with force is actually happening or not, before invoking the paradox.

This is why some get labeled extremists. Just today here in Sweden a guy got sentenced to one year in prison for an attack during confrontation with a political group, where he hit someone over the head with a bottle and attacked a child. During a previous similar situation he stabbed someone with a knife, so now its a repeat offense.

Those people we send to jail until they rehabilitate and can return to normal society where we don't do those things.

Re:Pentagon Influencer Called Liberal Women 'Pestilence' Who... by Henchman21 on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @12:12PM (#49910809)
Tolerance is a social contract. If you become intolerant in ways your group does not like, said contract is nullified in your specific case. Which means that when you display intolerance, you will no longer be tolerated.

This is the basic mechanism of social pressure. As social creatures, this is a part of us.

From my perspective, the active problem is that there are no longer any reasonable groups: membership in one means expulsion from the other. This not how progress is made or how compromise is reached. This is how wars begin.

Just my 2 cents. To quote a great singer:

"We’re sick and tired of your ism schism game"
