Kagi are using HN as free advertising, so we will hear about it whether folks are interested or not.

I've started making a list of "small web" discovery sites

https://wiby.me/surprise/

https://search.marginalia.nu/

https://ooh.directory/

https://curlie.org/

and now this one too!

Curlie was new to me, thanks — I thought DMOZ was dead-dead

Also experimenting with data URL website.

I made something similar, with more of a focus on small tech blogs:

https://blogs.hn

I’ve been wanting to add an omnibus RSS feed, but haven’t had the time. Let me know if you can think of easy ways to merge a bunch of RSS feeds!

Re:Kagi Small Web by maximevalette on Friday February 23, 2024 @12:12AM (#39477226)
Merging RSS feeds is what we do at FeedPress (among other things). Let me know if you want to try, that could be a great challenge!
Re:Kagi Small Web by pests on Thursday February 22, 2024 @11:07PM (#39476850)
Entire startups have come and gone trying to solve issues like that
Re:Kagi Small Web by zilti on Friday February 23, 2024 @12:37AM (#39477346)
Not really. Every "planet.whatever-project.tld" has been doing that since many years
Re:Kagi Small Web by toastal on Thursday February 22, 2024 @10:57PM (#39476781)
You can only submit a site thru a megacorporate proprietary service? Why is Microsoft GitHub involved when talking about “small web”--it is the opposite of small & indie + requires ToS & privacy concerns around accounts with that service (not to mention those blocked by US sanctions).
Re:Kagi Small Web by szszrk on Thursday February 22, 2024 @11:32PM (#39477000)
Do you have a proposals how to tackle those challenges?
Re:Kagi Small Web by CuteDinosaur on Thursday February 22, 2024 @11:38PM (#39477035)
well, yeah actually. This is not an excuse, everything can be changed into something more open and not Microsoft software.

Kagi - one of the best uses of money in 2024.
Re:Kagi Small Web by laweijfmvo on Thursday February 22, 2024 @10:31PM (#39476637)
Kagi, Proton, NextDNS, 1Blocker. My internet experience has gotten a lot less free (as in beer), but I’m totally fine with that.
Re:Kagi Small Web by fnordpiglet on Thursday February 22, 2024 @10:37PM (#39476669)
The key was it never was free, it’s just you couldn’t see what you were trading for it. I’d much rather do my transactions above the table than behind my back.
Re:Kagi Small Web by Solvency on Thursday February 22, 2024 @11:34PM (#39477010)
The fact that they don't offer any kind of free trial to me is insane.
Re:Kagi Small Web by tky on Thursday February 22, 2024 @11:37PM (#39477030)
They do. 100 free searches. https://kagi.com/pricing
Re:Kagi Small Web by Solvency on Friday February 23, 2024 @02:47PM (#39485243)
Bizarre. When I checked on mobile their was no free pricing tier. A/B testing?

Depends on whether you're already logged in it seems
Re:Kagi Small Web by AndrewKemendo on Thursday February 22, 2024 @09:18PM (#39476140)
This is the thing that’s going to make me finally build my rss feed and maybe start publishing more regularly again.

Kagi seems to be leading the counterrevolution and I can get behind that

Re:Kagi Small Web by pixelesque on Thursday February 22, 2024 @09:37PM (#39476300)
"Add Site" menu shows a popup saying:

'Hit "Add Site," and a new tab will open where you can add the feed to the end of our list. We'll sort it out after we take a look.'

but then clicking the button just goes to: https://github.com/kagisearch/smallweb/edit/main/smallweb.tx...

I guess technically "you can add the feed to the end of our list" is forking the repo and submitting a PR, but...

Re:Kagi Small Web by netule on Thursday February 22, 2024 @09:59PM (#39476440)
This is a fun idea, and I hope it takes off, but I already noticed some spammy sites, and reporting them isn't easy (it requires a PR).

I understand that adding a site requires a PR to have some barrier to entry, but reporting should probably be more accessible.

Re:Kagi Small Web by freediver on Thursday February 22, 2024 @10:14PM (#39476519)
Wondering which sites you saw that are spammy, as I consume this 2-3 times a day pretty much every day and have not noticed any. In any case submitting a PR to remove them should not be as burdensome.
Re:Kagi Small Web by mastazi on Thursday February 22, 2024 @11:03PM (#39476822)
I see they have a "small Youtube" page.

For a different take on the "small Youtube" concept, also see http://astronaut.io/ (featured here on HN a long time ago)

Re:Kagi Small Web by floren on Thursday February 22, 2024 @11:00PM (#39476804)
I like this, but when I saw "directory" I was hoping to see something more like DMOZ, something ontological rather than a grab bag. Still cool, though, and I intend to spend some time poking around.
Re:Kagi Small Web by ww520 on Thursday February 22, 2024 @11:04PM (#39476827)
Does Kagi has an add-on system that allows 3rd party developers to customize their searching/indexing/ranking/etc?
Re:Kagi Small Web by lordswork on Thursday February 22, 2024 @09:39PM (#39476311)
This is very cool. Love exploring new ways to make small websites more discoverable since SEO has made them very undiscoverable through search engines.

feedback: flag content button takes me to a 404: https://kagi.com/smallweb/flag_content?

Re:Kagi Small Web by freediver on Thursday February 22, 2024 @10:09PM (#39476498)
Should work now.
Re:Kagi Small Web by DeepChill on Thursday February 22, 2024 @10:02PM (#39476458)
Wouldn't it be cool to have a website where you can discover smaller blogs? Whether you're looking for blogs about tech, philosophy or whatever. And people can leave reviews about those blogs on the website so users can easily find/sort/filter for what they're looking for.
Re:Kagi Small Web by dewey on Thursday February 22, 2024 @10:24PM (#39476592)
You are describing StumbleUpon and similar sites.
Re:Kagi Small Web by aquova on Thursday February 22, 2024 @10:33PM (#39476648)
To be fair, StumbleUpon shut down half a decade ago and had vanished from the public consciousness far before that.
Re:Kagi Small Web by Nuzzerino on Thursday February 22, 2024 @09:24PM (#39476191)
So, basically StumbleUpon? Do I really have to sift through one page at a time with no filtering options?
