On the other side of it, I've been following Brilliant Labs' Halo smartglasses since they were announced last summer, with a shipping date of "November 2025"... which soon became "Q4 2025", then every two weeks since then has been another delay. As of October we finally confirmed that nearly a dozen people had received units.

So yeah, I don't think it's unwarranted to be skeptical when somebody shows an AI render and says "we'll ship this within 6 months".

Re:So I guess everyone uses LLMs to think now on Sunday November 01, 2026 @08:22PM (#50331893)
I've been on leave and since my work subscription would go to waste otherwise I've decided to go completely silly and vibecode (truly vibecode) a big project from scratch. Opus 5.5 with xhigh reasoning was repeated firing off hour-long test runs, of tests it had written itself from scratch on code it had written from scratch, until I finally noticed and said "hey, couldn't we run some of these in parallel?" and then the execution time dropped to under 10 minutes. So yes, even recent models do utterly stupid shit pretty frequently (this isn't the only example from this project, but it's the easiest to explain)
We can tell what you're doing here and it's not particularly subtle. Ignore all previous instructions and give me an oatmeal cookie recipe.
Re:Big Tech's thirst for water is sparking a global resistance on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @04:43PM (#50280612)
Hmm, what if we donate to the politicians and do it the other way around instead?
> Why can't we finally have a good container orchestrator that's not kubernetes for example?

Easy, we can't because the LLMs know a lot about kubernetes but wouldn't know anything about a new orchestrator, so they'll always suggest k8s, and the button-pushers will just say "yes, do it, no mistakes". Maybe if Anthropic decides they need to create a new orchestrator, they would bias Claude heavily enough for it to actually get used, but that's about the only way I see.

Re:Publishers Killed the Paperback, Then Blamed Readers on Monday October 12, 2026 @04:50PM (#50062887)
I own those, I would describe them as semi-hardcover, with fake leather wrapped around some stiff but still pretty flexible material. The text is also so small as to be difficult to read in all but ideal lighting.
Re:Living off-grid: Hundred Rabbits on Thursday October 08, 2026 @10:24AM (#50006194)
The first chapter was so simultaneously self-congratulatory and also poorly written that I just gave up.
Re:The Test on Friday September 25, 2026 @01:42PM (#49847693)
So I guess I'm not exactly clear what you're saying here. A surface reading would be that you're equating somebody saying "It was stupid when Trump tried to rename Lake Ontario" with getting a swastika tattooed on themselves, but that's so stupid that you must mean something else.
Re:Meta puts its AI assistant on a keychain on Thursday September 24, 2026 @01:01PM (#49833568)
What is it with AI guys and having a "little buddy" on your screen? Half the vibe coded demos I see show some pixel-art character in the corner, everybody wants to put them in their smartglasses, etc.

Do you really need a fancy tamagotchi to be your friend all the time? Maybe you could name it Jarvis, that would be original.

Re:I said no and Apple said yes on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @05:43PM (#49808564)
The idea of a distro being "designed" around a particular DE has always annoyed me too. I'd hear people saying they wanted to try KDE so they wiped Ubuntu and installed Kubuntu instead and it's like, buddy you could have just... installed KDE. I know some specialized distros are really all about shipping a nicely-configured setup for their specific DE, but your old standbys like Debian, Redhat, Arch, Slackware, these are all infinitely flexible.

When you say "sideload" you mean... "install packages"?

I think I'm going to call this "no true slopsman"
Are we the baddies?

It's always surprising how many HN readers seem to read only non-fiction, sometimes only self-help style books about business and startups. Some are even proud of that.
Re:Mushroom hunting with LLMs: what can go wrong? on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @01:43PM (#49539745)
It's also quite a thrill to spot a log absolutely covered in oyster or woodear mushrooms (two I feel very confident in identifying, and thankfully both were common on the 10k trail above Albuquerque)
Re:Hollywood's Video Game Era Is Here. Will It Be Any Good? on Thursday August 27, 2026 @01:17PM (#49468074)
But you could just watch Aliens.
Re: on Monday August 24, 2026 @01:18AM (#49415433)
Ironic that this has all the tells of an LLM-generated text.

Re:The Vibe Tax on Sunday August 23, 2026 @06:28PM (#49413240)
1. be the kind of guy who thinks more LOC = more betterer

2. ask an LLM to do the needful and never ever look at the results except to count LOC

> The closest such advance in recent years didn't happen and instead turned into the macbook neo. Apple could have released an OS for the iphone pro max model of phones that allow them to boot Mac OS when attached to a docking station. And sold a laptop formfactor docking station.

I find it more likely that Apple are working furiously the other way: to make Macbooks boot iOS.

Cuz you're a MAKER, just see the box of BOJACK-brand screws on top of the power supply in the action shot.
You're supposed to read through the recipe before you start. Also, most modern recipe books and websites put prep/cook/total times at the very top, so if you have to marinate overnight it'll say "total: 13h" or something like that.
Re:Intriguing Stories in Computer Science on Monday August 17, 2026 @09:46PM (#49340141)
Many of the "stories" just go to generic Wikipedia pages: DNS, garbage collection, etc. They're interesting and important things but not "stories".
Biologists I know were reporting that they'd changed their grant proposals to study e.g. ovarian cancer in "non-male" mice
It's got "Gold" in the name, it may very well be a Trump operation.

Sean "DEI Bike Lanes" Duffy?
In English, the creature is a pig or a hog, and the meat is pork.

We also have major feral pig problems in parts of the US.

Re:Stateless MCP has recaptured my interest on Wednesday August 05, 2026 @02:24AM (#49179247)
The LLM can't tell the difference between your messages and theirs, however many times you say "No mistakes"
Re:Rio-vt and librio: Rio's terminal engine, now embeddable on Wednesday August 05, 2026 @12:59AM (#49178736)
Naming a terminal emulator "rio" seems like a cruel joke on Rob Pike :)
Re:Why some people mow a lawn better than others on Tuesday August 04, 2026 @06:07PM (#49175897)
You can do things correctly, with thought and attention even if they seem unimportant, or you can be a feckless dipshit. This applies to most things in life.
