The FAGMAN companies got caught colluding to depress wages by avoiding hiring people already employed by the others, so they learned to accomplish the same thing without writing it down by having these periodic huge layoffs across the entire industry https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-Tech_Employee_Antitrust_L...

They left out that it was in Fremont, California, providing jobs (lol) for Americans — something that Apple famously stopped doing on their path to becoming obscenely rich: https://www.cultofmac.com/news/a-brief-history-of-steve-jobs...

Peep the graphics hardware limitations of the Nintendo Famicom/NES, for example: https://noelberry.ca/posts/nes/index.html

You can see these limitations guiding the designs of actual retro games if you know what to look for.

Example: In CAPCOM's Mega Man (1987), the famous “Yellow Devil” boss fight plays the way it does because only the moving chunks of the Devil's body are composed of Sprite tiles. When one of those chunks reaches the opposite side of the screen, that part of the Devil's body becomes drawn with Background tiles instead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RbPqqPrL_M

This is also why the Devil, Dragon, and Wily boss fights (anything larger than a regular Robot Master) take place entirely in a black void — the Background layer is exhausted drawing the bosses and there's nothing left over for actual play-area background.

Honestly I'm amazed yours lasted this long. I had a fourth-gen 40GB iPod back in The Day and it was easily the least-reliable Apple product I ever owned due to that internal 1.8" HDD. Mine was replaced five times under AppleCare.

When that eventually ran out and it died again (in 2009 IIRC), I swapped in a CompactFlash card using a cheap adapter from DealExtreme. Once you do that or an SD card mod (more popular these days), have iTunes restore the partitioning scheme and OS and it'll be good to go.

Re:UUIDv7 doesn't have the properties you think it does on Friday October 23, 2026 @03:57PM (#50214478)
This is why the oldschool UUIDv1 spec specifies initializing the sequence value at a random number:

“12.4.4 — The Clock Sequence shall be originally (that is, once in the lifetime of a system producing UUIDs) initialized to a random number that is not derived from the Node value. NOTE – This is in order to minimize the correlation across systems, providing maximum protection”

> _anonymous_ telemetry

There is no such thing. The mere act of making a network connection reveals things like your IP address (reveals your hosting provider or even your geolocation for residential/mobile IPs), days and times you use the software, your OS via TCP/IP stack fingerprinting, etc.

The network path between you and the telemetry endpoint is always listening, too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Room_641A

My Grandma used one of these. Happy memories of many summer trips to the Alleghenies :)
And lest anybody say it's not possible, I personally use a jailbreak tweak for this on my iPhone 11 / iOS 18 / Dopamine 3.0 that works flawlessly:

> Is Tailscale creating additional metadata that doesn't already exist in "concentrated" form with my ISP?

Yes, for connections between any pairs of machines that were previously entirely behind your NAT, unless you use bare LAN IP addresses for everything. Tailscale takes over DNS resolution very aggressively, so any use of short hostnames will have them resolve to Tailscale's CGNAT range instead even if they're on the same network.

Yeah for sure, but good luck getting mom and dad to edit `%PROGRAMDATA%\Tailscale\tailscaled-env.txt` at all, much less do so correctly.

> - Tailscale so me, my family and friends

If you're privacy conscious, please be aware that Tailscale by default is creating behavioral metadata from all of those computers for the Room 641As of the world about everything you do on your supposedly “private” network: https://tailscale.com/docs/features/logging

“This includes real-time events for open and close events for every inter-machine connection (TCP or UDP) on your network.”

No, fuck this lazy line of thinking. If the outcome is the same then it doesn't matter.

Luck of the draw due to IP address reputation. I host my email on a $5 VPS, but the IP has mapped to my VPS for like 15 years so it's fine.

How many are you alleging me to have killed? Last time I checked, that was wrong no matter how you might do it. Do you struggle to avoid temptation when you have the means to kill and must choose not to?
