Gamers Nexus has a good discovery video on how extensive smart TVs are snooping on people.

Should it be investors owned monopoly have higher charges for electricity?

How did they identify your software? Could you guys produce a sibling program whose job is to identify the windows version and notify the main program?

Re:Developing Taste on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @01:02AM (#50161542)
Taste is overrated. Taste is an excuse for gatekeeping and a tool for exclusivity. Your work won’t fly because it lacks taste, whatever that’s it, defined by whomever.

It wasn't meant to be a flex.
Re:JDK 28 on Saturday October 17, 2026 @07:37PM (#50136235)
I'm using JDK 21 (old) and the startup time is sub-second for small programs.
Just stacco on wood frame. It’s adding a new circuit from the panel; might need to add a circuit breaker for the circuit. The wire can go through crawl space or over in attic.
OT. What’s the going rate for adding a new circuit from the panel? Let’s say the circuit ended with an external outlet outside of the garage and to an outlet inside the garage.
Re:What I Self-Host on Friday October 16, 2026 @12:37PM (#50120657)
That's i3. Also what's the temperature when it's doing work instead of idling?
Re:What I Self-Host on Friday October 16, 2026 @12:36PM (#50120641)
It's the CPU voltage setting in BIOS that got reverted.
Re:What I Self-Host on Thursday October 15, 2026 @08:33PM (#50112205)
I did clean the thermal paste between the CPU and the heat sink, and re-applied new thermal gel. That didn't help. It was the raised voltage preset in the BIOS. If I lowered the voltage, the temperature stayed low and it would run fine, until the next power down reverting the BIOS changes. The box was too small, the heat sink was too cheap, and the fan was too lacking to be a proper overclocking setup. It would run fine out of the box for couple months until the CPU and hardware worn out due to stress and heat.
Re:What I Self-Host on Thursday October 15, 2026 @08:05PM (#50112020)
Just a note on OP's hardware choice. I used to have a Beelink with the N100 CPU. That thing overheated and reboot intermittently after couple months of usage. I suspected they overclocked the CPU to look good in benchmarks. I tried to underclock in the BIOS. The temperatures dropped but the setting was reverted after the next reboot. Nothing in the BIOS stuck. Their support was worse than useless. The machine ended up as spare parts.

You are better off getting the used business mini-PC from HP/Dell/Leveno/Asus. They have better specs and run great.

Re:Do dentists know what they're doing? on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @08:24PM (#50097539)
Dermatologists are hit or miss. I had one years ago who had her own practice. Her office was fancy and filled with skincare products; I guess her main clienteles were women wanting better looking skin. But she was good. She looked at the symptom for a minute, prescribed a cream, and gave detail instruction on how to apply it. The whole visit was less than 5 minutes. My skin condition plaguing me for several years were gone within two weeks.

Years later I had dermatologists in hospitals who were bad to useless. The only good one was a new graduate doing substitution shift for my dermatologist who was on leave. The sub prescribed medication that actually work.

Re:Solar Panels That Plug into Your Wall on Monday October 12, 2026 @07:54PM (#50064702)
With less energy drawn over the wire, the transmission cost goes down since less transmission infrastructure being used. The overall transmission cost should go down as well since there's less need to expand the transmission infrastructure.
Re:Solar Panels That Plug into Your Wall on Monday October 12, 2026 @12:32PM (#50058863)
Last I checked the biggest cost in the electric bill is transmission, by a wide margin. Home generated power however small helps everyone.
Re:Solar Panels That Plug into Your Wall on Monday October 12, 2026 @12:17PM (#50058603)
U.S. homes typically get power through two hot wires. The hot wires are connected to a utility company's transformer and are 180 degree out of phase. Each supplies 120 volts.

The power from the plug-in outlet is consumed by any devices connected on the same circuit first. Any extra flow through the electric panel’s bar connecting the circuits on the same 120V phase, where the devices on them use the extra next. Any excessive power flows back out of the meter on the 120V phase line on your service connection to the transformer at the street block. The transformer might feed it to your neighbors. In any case the transformer feed electricity to the other 120V phase line back into your service connection, the meter, the panel, the other split phase bar, the circuits on it, and the outlets on them. The devices on the other split phase circuits technically are not using the plug-in power directly.

Most modern meters measure electricity going in and out on both split phase lines as a whole, as a net amount, so the electricity consumed in the other split phase circuits is offset by the plug-in power. However some old meters add the outgoing electricity up as consumption so you are paying for the electricity fed into the grid. Call your utility company to make sure.

Also, unless you have a net metering agreement with your utility company, you won’t get paid for any excessive electricity fed back into the grid.

Re:Nobel Prize in Physics goes to Francis Halzen on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @06:02PM (#49984748)
Most paths of the high energy observable collisions follow a very close alignment to the original neutrino's path. The forward momentum of a high energy neutrino completely dominates the collision. Imagine an one-ton ball hitting a billiard ball. Doesn't matter what direction the billiard ball was going; the resulting path is the one-ton ball's path.

In other cases, the particle being collided is scattered and won't show up in the detector. Low energy neutrino collisions also have very faint light and difficult to detect. Solar system produced neutrinos are in this category.

Re:Nobel Prize in Physics goes to Francis Halzen on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @05:23PM (#49984362)
Since neutrinos don’t interact with much of anything, its path doesn’t deviate from its origin. Different origins emit neutrinos with different levels of energy. When a neutrino hits a nucleus, the blue light emitting particle in ice follows closely the same direction. Measuring the direction and the magnitude (lighting energy) of the vector we can classify its origin. Collecting a bunch of the same signature we know there's an object at that direction emitting at that energy level. From the vector and energy we kind of know whether it’s from the solar system or not.

Identifying the origin let us see objects behind dust clouds or other obstacles.
