It's too late for a short term solution but long term --- friends don't let friends do GoDaddy.

Who exactly do you trust. Seems like none of big tech companies provide much customer service

AWS has absolutely superb customer service. Cloudflare is also great, but their policies are shody

Does AWS have a domain registration service?
Re:GoDaddy suspended our site on Friday evening and doesn't ... by sdflhasjd on Sunday July 30, 2023 @06:27PM (#36936646)
Yes, through their DNS product, Route 53.

EasyDNS (easydns.com). They're not cheap, but they don't even roll over automatically in response to legal threats which is good for piece of mind, just in case. :)

Namecheap and aws

I'd advise against Namecheap (as a former many year customer) as they decided a while back to start taking a political stance as a business; they terminated existing customers, with no notice, because they disagreed with political actions of the customer's home country. Whatever country you live in could so something in the future they don't like and they'll just drop you, can't rely on them to act as a business.

How to say your a Russian national without saying your a Russian national.

Or they could just be a reasonable person sympathetic to the plight of ordinary Russians who don't really have any influence on Putin's government.

Do you also advocate for protests that only the protestors see that affect no one but the protestor's day?

Do you see both sides of this issue?
Re:GoDaddy suspended our site on Friday evening and doesn't ... by notahacker on Monday July 31, 2023 @07:49PM (#36950500)
Irrespective of nationality I'm not sure a reasonable person would trivialise the invasion of the country the majority of Namecheap staff were based in as "political action...they don't like".
Re:GoDaddy suspended our site on Friday evening and doesn't ... by beeburrt on Sunday July 30, 2023 @10:04PM (#36938071)
That's good to know. I'll stop using them.

When Australia invades a close neighbour and commits war-crimes against the civilian population, I will happily accept the closing of my Namecheap account.

Re:GoDaddy suspended our site on Friday evening and doesn't ... by Takennickname on Monday July 31, 2023 @01:27AM (#36939099)
No you wouldn't. You just say that because you think Australia won't do it. As soon as Australia does it you'll have a million reasons for why "It's Different™"
Re:GoDaddy suspended our site on Friday evening and doesn't ... by ipaddr on Monday July 31, 2023 @07:23PM (#36950249)
Australia doesn't have any close neighbours they are literally an island
Re:GoDaddy suspended our site on Friday evening and doesn't ... by southernplaces7 on Monday July 31, 2023 @11:18PM (#36951903)
So you think it's perfectly okay for a company to punish people for the criminal acts of their national government? I wouldn't expect such jingoistic garbage from commentators on s site like this. Also, I doubt you would accept if it was applied to you for being Australian. You claim differently, but likely you would complain, perhaps here, about how unfair and unjustified it was, which is reasonable. Unreasonable is being condescending to such a valid complaint from others because you're not in their shoes and it's easy to deride them for being some "other".

Can you provide any concrete evidence that supports your personal assertion?

While I cannot offer concrete evidence, it's fairly easy to see that this could happen for Russian nationals or similar.

Because it doesn't exist, and you're making stuff up.

This is a euphemistic way of describing what happened when the customer's home country started the "political action" of bombing cities Namecheap staff were based in.

Re:GoDaddy suspended our site on Friday evening and doesn't ... by mkl on Monday July 31, 2023 @07:42AM (#36941199)
This is quite a misleading comment.

They gave notice: "Existing users were given a one-week grace period to move their domains.[12] The next day, the deadline was extended by another 2 weeks."

It is not a general political policy but a reaction against one nation that is literally threatening their employees' lives: "Namecheap at the same time said it had over 1,000 employees located in Ukraine, comprising most of its support staff mostly in Kharkiv".

A week or two before deleting is not really peace of mind for an average person who may not have gotten the email (no letters were mailed). Punishing unrelated groups of people including women and minorities was a political statement not an operational issue. Deleting customers domains did not make anyone safer.

It's horrible when companies choose to exert their agency.
Re:GoDaddy suspended our site on Friday evening and doesn't ... by highclass on Monday July 31, 2023 @09:42AM (#36942316)
Namecheap is horrible regarding legal threats and how they manage them. In my experience, they threaten to shutdown domains with 24 hours notice if you do not respond to legal threats. Although I avoided being shutdown, I almost didn't respond to such an email thinking the email from Namcecheap was spam. I highly recommend avoiding Namecheap for business.

Currently I migrated to Gandi with no problem.

ICANN bending the knee to registry owners doesn’t help. On a whim, discretionary banning shouldn’t be a thing. At the very least I should be able to pre-pay for some type of guaranteed, impartial arbitration before my domain gets banned.

I'm shocked people purchase services from bigtech companies. I understand advertising works but would you buy a service from a local company who is known to damage your property and gives you no way to contact them when they screwup. People keep doing it with bigtech. People buy Oracle or IBM for similiar reasons and outcomes.

How does someone know enough to post about this on HN, without encountering the weekly "help, GoDaddy fucked me" threads?
Re:GoDaddy suspended our site on Friday evening and doesn't ... by psd1 on Monday July 31, 2023 @03:54AM (#36939842)
That's hyperbole.

I've been here for a year and I don't recall seeing godaddy mentioned on HN once.

Way back when I was a helldesk imp, godaddy was one of the better providers IME. I wouldn't use it now, but I also wouldn't consider it peak facepunching.

Re:GoDaddy suspended our site on Friday evening and doesn't ... by retrocryptid on Monday July 31, 2023 @11:18AM (#36943909)
If you search for "godaddy" on HN and sort by date, the majority of the posts have a negative sentiment towards godaddy. But they seem chunked. Two in the last week, three from three months ago, ten from seven months ago. My sense is that if you averaged them out, it looks like there are about two per month.

And sure, one every two months isn't the same as one per week, but it's not so far off as to enter hyperbole territory, I think.
