What with last-minute changes in the code and different exchanges doing different things, it would be best to have all your Bitcoins in offline wallets before the fork. Within a few days after the fork, things should settle down.

(Although, of course, there's probably money to be made while prices are changing rapidly around the time of the split. There's going to be some churn.)

This seems like a sane path forward, though the bit about leverage denominated in BTC before the split being a debt in both BTC and "BCH" after the split is a bit counterintuitive if you're not paying attention.

For those tuning in, Bitcoin is undergoing what's known in the investment industry as a "spin-off". That is when a company splits into different companies that are independently managed and holders of the original company get units of each. This is what happened with HP, when it spun off Agilent. The reason for the split is that people mining Bitcoin can not agree on the features that Bitcoin should have.

This causes issues because Bitcoin was never engineered for this contingency. In the ideal case, you would be allowed to select which blockchain you are spending your tokens on. Bitcoin transactions do not contain any information about which blockchain they should be allowed to be spent on, so all transactions spent after the fork are valid on both blockchains regardless of the author's intentions. BCC could have fixed this by provisioning their transactions to be chain-specific, but it seems they did not.

There are significant tax ramifications of this, which are sure to cause a headache for everyone. It seems to me that the tax basis of the original Bitcoins will become diminished by the proportional amount of the value of BCC on the day of the spin-off.

Luckily they last-minute added replay protection so that transactions are chain-specific, making the situation far better. I've not reviewed their solution for correctness, but others seem content with it.

That is good news. This means that even if CoinBase doesn't initially support the fork, they can do so at any later time without any losses to their user base.

That's a fantastically positive spin on what looks like (to an outsider) a hot pile a poop. It's more like two children tearing the teddy bear in half because neither could compromise.

Until a few minutes ago I had my BTC stored across bitstamp and kraken. I have just transferred all my remaining BTCs to kraken so I'll get whatever quantity of BCC i am due after the fork. Even if it's a very small quantity owing to a small number of miners switching to the BCC code, it doesn't seem fair that bitstamp would simply pocket the value (if my understanding is correct)
Re:Bitcoin Cash and a Critical Alert for Bitcoin Margin Traders by SimonPStevens on Friday July 28, 2017 @03:04PM (#14876646)
The amount of BCC you will get is exactly equal to the amount of BTC you have. If you have 1 btc, after the fork will have 1 bcc and 1 btc. It doesn't matter how many miners support either chain.

Best advice is usually not to hold it on an exchange however. Withdraw it to a personal wallet you control. That way you will have the most control over what happens after the fork.

I'm going all in, boys. I've sold all my ETH and put it in my Kraken wallet.

Seems like a bad move considering the current low ETH/BTC ratio.

Kraken seems to be to be the only major exchange that is taking this approach.

It looks like all other exchanges will be free to pocket the BCC they derive from the fork... Am I right on this?

Q: Will Coinbase keep UAHF coins for itself?

    A: No.

Coinbase does not intend to support or interact
with the UAHF chain. If this were to change,
Coinbase would make those coins available for
customers to withdraw, not keep them.

Re:Bitcoin Cash and a Critical Alert for Bitcoin Margin Traders by uncletammy on Friday July 28, 2017 @04:17PM (#14877199)
I'm not sure how believable this is. If the BCC chain survives, exchanges "not interacting" with the BCC chain will have great implications on the scarcity of the BCC token.

It's way more likely that they will change their policy after angry holders aren't allowed their coins. The more expensive BCC gets, the stronger the incentive for those exchanges to cave or cheat. Regardless, most exchange's hot wallet addresses are known. The second exchanges cheat, everyone will know.

This is either a political signal that they are still on team Segwit or it's a very risky bet that BCC will die, made for the purpose of saving a few bucks in administrative costs.

The only possibility outside of ignoring it is to sell the BCH coins and pocket the money. They have told their customers what they need to do if they want to access the BCH chain. If they choose not to, they are owed nothing.

Can someone tell me what will happen if I have my BTC sitting in a private, non exchange wallet like Electrum at the time of fork? It seems the process is I create a new BTC wallet, transfer my BTC to the new wallet, and then use the old wallet/seed to create a BCH wallet? That will magically give me the "new" BCH coins associated with my BTC?
Re:Bitcoin Cash and a Critical Alert for Bitcoin Margin Traders by gus_massa on Friday July 28, 2017 @05:49PM (#14877876)
The problem is that the coins are not in your wallet. Your coins are just a number in the blockchain. The wallet is only a file "password" to move your bitcoins from one part of the blockchain to another part of the blockchain.

If you loose your wallet file, the coins are not lost, they are still there. It's like having some coins of gold, and loosing the only key of a hyper secure safe box where their are stored in, while it is sinking in the Titanic. The gold coins are still there, but you will not be able to use them.

A wallet is a bad analogy. Let's try another worse analogy.

The blockchain is like a giant Google spreadsheet. Each cell has a password. With the password you can subtract a value from the cell and add the value to another cell. You don't need the password of the other cell where you add the number. The wallet file just store the password.

So you "have" 20 sheetcoins in in the cell G84 and the password is MHALL. (It's much more complicated. I'm ignoring a lot of technical details here.) So the sheetcoins are not in your wallet file, they are in the Google server. If you loose the password you just can't change your cell anymore.

Now let's suppose that someone decides to copy the spreadsheet to Office365. And they don't copy only the values but also the passwords. So now you "have" 20 sheetcoins in the cell G84 of in the Microsoft server. And you can move some of them to another cell to pay for something, because you have the password MHALL.

The coins are not in the wallet file, they are in the Google and Microsoft servers. So you have the "double" of coins.

If you instead copy the wallet file to a pendrive, or another computer, you don't double your number of coins. You are only copying the password to move them.

Now the problem of the two spreadsheets is that people must take them seriously. If nobody cares about the new copy in Office365, then your coins there are worthless, because nobody will accept a change in the Office365 version in exchange for something useful. But if everyone decides to forget the old Google version and use only the new version, then the coins in the old version are worthless, they are just numbers. And there are some in between cases, were some people prefer one version an other people prefer the other version, and the coins in both version have some value. You have more the "double" of coins but the price of each will be lower, so you don't have the "double" of dollars.

One very important details is that the blockchain is decentralized, so you don't need a server in Google or Microsoft to host the spreadsheet. "Everyone" has a somewhat synchronized copy, and "everyone" process your request to move some coins from the cell G84 to another cell if you have the MHALL password.

(How can you send your password to everyone to prove you are allowed to use the G84 cell in a safe way, so no one can reuse your password to steal all your coins? Well, that one of the technical details I'm hiding.)

Now, since there is no central server and "everyone" host a copy of the spreadsheet, people can use a slightly different version of the spreadsheet hosting version. So some people will have the spreadsheet of version A and other will have the spreadsheet of version B. If a request to move coins is legal in version A and illegal in version B you will have a different value in the cell G84 in the computer of the people that runs version A and version B. It's easier to give a different name to each value, and say that you have some Acoins and some Bcoins.

Correct.

There is a Bitcoin Cash fork for Electrum: https://github.com/fyookball/electrum

Electrum themselves recommend moving your coins to a different set of private keys before importing the old set into that client, though: https://electrum.org/bcc.txt

So if I transfer from Coinbase to kraken - I'd be able to leverage the split in a no risk scenario?
Re:Bitcoin Cash and a Critical Alert for Bitcoin Margin Traders by TekMol on Friday July 28, 2017 @03:10PM (#14876701)
Well.. at the moment are you at the mercy of Coinbase. Then you are at the mercy of Kraken. Why don't you just keep the coins to yourself?

Have any link to a guide on how to do that? Wallet on my own?
