These are still 1-click, not zero click. So the best protection you can have is not opening unknown files that were sent to you. That being said, lockdown mode blocks all sorts of message attachments. From the videos it look like they are using pdfs in the messaging vector, which would get blocked too. So you would be safe-ish. But lockdown mode is so restrictive that it doesn't really make sense for most users. Or at least it doesn't make sense to buy a $1500 phone and then limit yourself to something you could have gotten for $50.

You don’t know what lockdown is do you? I’ve had my phone in lockdown for a year. I can’t: collaborate on notes, and it does not automatically open links in chat. Other than that my experience is identical to non lockdown.

some sites don't work (you can explicitly whitelist them tho) but generally it's been fine. i would honestly prefer a phone that doesn't allow any comms to any non-contact list parties at this point.
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by throwaway219450 on Friday October 23, 2026 @04:32PM (#50214930)
From what I can see in Apple docs, aside from web limitations it sounds great. Is there any real reason to not enable this? Like I would be deeply suspicious of a PDF sent via messages and no auto-connect to insecure WiFi is also common sense.
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by dilyevsky on Friday October 23, 2026 @04:36PM (#50214977)
been using it for years, haven't found a compelling reason not to yet
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by Barbing on Saturday October 24, 2026 @01:51AM (#50218639)
The iPhone is so expensive, definitely want shared photo albums to be part of the ecosystem experience.

I’ll admit I thought you lost out on more by enabling.

Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by Den_VR on Saturday October 24, 2026 @01:32PM (#50223338)
If only they would let people turn things on and off when they want to
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by throwaway219450 on Monday October 26, 2026 @01:59AM (#50239679)
I will say from a couple days: the only issues so far are that the image carousel in the Amazon app no longer works, but clicking on the (blank) photo does. I haven’t found issues like that with any other sites or apps. You don’t seem to be able to view PDFs in Safari, but can download them and view with Preview. Not bad, it’s what I do on OS X anyway as you otherwise have to rely on browser caching to avoid re-downloading - except it’s surprisingly hard to find the download list if you didn’t recently download a file in the current tab? And it insists on showing “lockdown enabled” everywhere, which is probably a good reminder for those who need it, but I wish I could hide it. Maybe you can pick these options à la carte?
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by prmoustache on Friday October 23, 2026 @05:03PM (#50215291)
Doesn't seem like a lot according to the description and pretty much what I would set by default.

> Web browsing: Certain complex web technologies are blocked, which might cause some websites to load more slowly or not operate correctly. In addition, web fonts might not be displayed, and images might be replaced with a missing image icon.

Images being replaced with a missing image icon doesn't seem like a lot according to the description, and it's what you would set by default?

Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by Gigachad on Friday October 23, 2026 @10:17PM (#50217812)
“Might be” seems to carry a lot of weight. I’ve been running lockdown mode and I haven’t seen any images not load. Presumably it’s only images of a certain obscure kind.
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by josh2600 on Friday October 23, 2026 @05:04PM (#50215306)
Yeah what I want is a configurable version of lockdown mode where I can have my agent sync my allowlist with my hardware.

Like give me the list of what I can turn on and off, and then let me choose my lockdown sphere.

That’s the future, and it’s coming.

I can send my friends a PDF of a restaurant's menu over iMessage. I think that wouldn't work for you?

Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by lelandfe on Sunday October 25, 2026 @09:10AM (#50231182)
Not only would you not do that, I don't know that you can.
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by DANmode on Sunday October 25, 2026 @08:43PM (#50237564)
You don’t know that you can hit Share, or the address bar, and pass the restaurant.com/menu.pdf URL?

or am I misreading this conversation?

Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by lelandfe on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @06:19AM (#50256916)
I do that. Commenter I was replying to cannot, being as they have Lockdown Mode enabled.

> had my phone in lockdown for a year. I can’t: collaborate on notes

That's your own mistake, because you can collaborate on Notes while your iPhone is in Lockdown

Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by DANmode on Sunday October 25, 2026 @08:38PM (#50237532)
Just not initiate any new collaborations.

To be explicitly clear.

Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by sigmoid10 on Friday October 23, 2026 @06:51PM (#50216479)
I guess you don't browse any modern webpages? Otherwise I can't explain your perspective. You basically lose up to 95% of performance in anything remotely resembling a JS heavy web app. So it would run the same as on a cheap Android phone.
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by so-gala-massey on Friday October 23, 2026 @08:51PM (#50217336)
Send me a webpage that you can’t view in lockdown. I haven’t had a single problem. I guess I’m just not really relevant in your eyes.
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by ShinyLeftPad on Friday October 23, 2026 @10:01PM (#50217731)
it's very rare that they break but there's some popular ones like booking.com

in my experience like maybe <5% of the web break

Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by sigmoid10 on Saturday October 24, 2026 @08:24AM (#50220602)
Breaking is not the issue (at least most of the time), but the performance loss is everywhere.
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by troyjfarrell on Saturday October 24, 2026 @11:25AM (#50222183)
Turkish Airlines site does not load in Lockdown mode. Users cannot log in at rei.com with Lockdown mode on.
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by anakaine on Sunday October 25, 2026 @06:09PM (#50236515)
Now is this an unanticipated fault, or is the phone preventing some shady happenings, as that mode is designed to do?
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by Gigachad on Friday October 23, 2026 @10:15PM (#50217801)
My experience has been the iPhone chip is fast enough to still run pages just fine. Maybe those ones that load 300 adverts and relay out the page 5 times as they load won’t work but they hardly worked before anyway.
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by sigmoid10 on Saturday October 24, 2026 @08:26AM (#50220609)
Everything that runs with such a major performance decrease will also run fine on a cheap phone. If this is your normal use case that's fine, but it simply means you also didn't need such a powerful Iphone in the first place. It's like buying an RTX5090 and then playing 2048 in a browser and saying you don't understand why people always install Nvidia drivers.

Whoah don’t get personal now. I just prefer open source.

Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by sigmoid10 on Sunday October 25, 2026 @04:41AM (#50229489)
You can do so and that's fine, but it doesn't change the fact that it's stupid to buy a crazy expensive GPU and then only run it in a limited way because of some personal preference in an unrelated field.

i run Vanadium on GraheneOS with javascript JIT off (the default configuration) and it's fine basically everywhere
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by red369 on Saturday October 24, 2026 @11:41PM (#50228085)
Doesn't disabling lockdown mode for specific websites solve this though? Or do you think this partially defeats the purpose for enabling it in the first place?
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by gfto on Saturday October 24, 2026 @03:42AM (#50219055)
I would still be using lockdown mode if the call notifications were send to my Apple Watch. Other than that lockdown mode was working pretty good for me.
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by red369 on Saturday October 24, 2026 @11:32PM (#50228029)
Hmm - I'm sure I've had that working. I have also had problems with notifications on my Apple Watch, and I'm not sure what I did to solve that, and I've also turned Lockdown mode on and off at various times, so I'm not sure.

Still - maybe take another look? I think it should work. I'll turn lockdown mode on again and test. I can't remember why I turned it off anyway.

Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by SomeUserName432 on Saturday October 24, 2026 @04:20AM (#50219237)
My only gripe with lockdown mode is that my banking app loads icons from some source that ends up being blocked.

Quite annoying. I've tried to explain it to them, but to no avail.

Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by m463 on Saturday October 24, 2026 @04:22AM (#50219249)
It works great for me too.

But there are weirdnesses.

For example, you can't add a person to phone favorites.

Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by diavolodeejay on Saturday October 24, 2026 @05:08AM (#50219443)
Does the favorites added before enabling lockdown mode remain or they get removed as well?
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by m463 on Sunday October 25, 2026 @02:26AM (#50228862)
Favorites exist, but lockdown just means you can't add/delete favorites.

To change the list just turn off lockdown, add/remove people, then turn it back on.

Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by red369 on Saturday October 24, 2026 @11:55PM (#50228161)
Wait - it looks like this is right! I was thinking that of course you could, but it doesn't seem like the option exists once Lockdown mode is turned on. Do you know why? I don't remember reading that in the list of effects.

It seems as though it doesn't affect existing favourites in any way...

Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by m463 on Sunday October 25, 2026 @02:24AM (#50228854)
I believe folks in the favorites list have privileges to contact you, so this must prevent random people from doing that.

To add to favorites, turn off lockdown mode, favorite someone, then turn it back on.

Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by Panino on Friday October 23, 2026 @02:16PM (#50213214)
I use Lockdown Mode and the functionality I get is nothing like a $50 device. If you're being serious can you link to some $50 devices for sale that are on par with a recent iPhone Pro running in Lockdown Mode?
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by Too on Saturday October 24, 2026 @03:45AM (#50219069)
I’d bet the security of those $50 phones is worse than an iPhone without lockdown mode.
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by rogerkirkness on Saturday October 24, 2026 @11:23AM (#50222159)
N=1 from my own experience but other than occasionally disabling it in Safari for websites it seems to work flawlessly for me. I've had it on MacOS and iOS for about a year now.
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone by ckx on Sunday October 25, 2026 @03:50AM (#50229252)
I dont know why anyone would enable lockdown mode, it's completely useless to have enabled when you could avoud having it on by just not clicking on suspicious files. Besides unless your a high-ranking employee or CEO or something, nobody is going to actively try and hack your phone, lockdown mode is just completely useless...
