Sometimes when I'm helping with homework, and looking for an example to practice, I find something in the workbook pages which they haven't reached yet. I find it cute when kids are nervous they'll get into trouble for having done the work before the teacher reaches that section. Of all the things to get in trouble for...!

I really, really hope they're worrying unnecessarily! I think it's better to find out early if a teacher is going to have an issue with things like that.

Re:OLED iPad Mini on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @09:53PM (#50268417)
Interesting! Thanks for the opinion. I'm very skeptical that I'll feel the same way, but I'll check it out next time I'm near one.

I just replaced the battery in my Mini, and got the bonus free screen (I understand it is hard even for Apple to replace the battery without breaking the screen), so I'm probably set for a while, but it would be nice to have an upgrade path in the future!

Even countries which aren't as far along must be nervous when doing forecasting. Working with a team planning around forecast public healthcare requirements was anxiety inducing.

There were all sorts of plans to reduce the future requirement by addressing issues earlier, and preventing patients ending up in hospital, but it seemed to me that reduced quality of care in the future is inevitable.

Re:The new iPad mini on Monday October 26, 2026 @10:25PM (#50254031)
You mean that the corner was damaged, not that a cat also chewed on the corner of your MBP, right? I'm still in shock that a cat would chew on glass and metal enough to damage it - two cats doing it is too much in one day!
Re:OLED iPad Mini on Monday October 26, 2026 @10:16PM (#50253953)
The iPhone Air is larger than an iPhone 17 in height and width. Every non-plus/max iPhone since the 13 Mini came out is smaller than the Air in height and width. Wouldn't they be a more logical upgrade than the Air?

The main body of the iPhone Air is thinner, of course, but including the camera bulge, I think it's thicker than all non-pro iPhones up to the 16.

Is there something about making the main body thinner that makes the iPhone Air more comfortable to hold than other smaller phones? Is it the weight? The 17e is only 4 g heavier than the Air, and the 16e is only 2 g heavier.

I have never been interested in the Air because of the size, so I can't even remember if I have picked one up in an Apple Store.

To act as the Devil's Advocate here, I suppose the very high valuations for the AI companies are because some people think AI will solve those through allowing robots to do that work. Although, Healthcare is a lot broader, and seems to me to be much more complicated than the others. Surely less solvable than the others in your list - if any are in the near future.

Healthcare is probably the one that we need some sort of help with the most! I think the need for people (fine - or robots) working in Healthcare will grow faster compared to the others in the future because of population aging.

Edit: Clarified my meaning by adding "some people think" to the sentence "...because some people think AI will solve..."

Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone on Saturday October 24, 2026 @11:55PM (#50228161)
Wait - it looks like this is right! I was thinking that of course you could, but it doesn't seem like the option exists once Lockdown mode is turned on. Do you know why? I don't remember reading that in the list of effects.

It seems as though it doesn't affect existing favourites in any way...

Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone on Saturday October 24, 2026 @11:41PM (#50228085)
Doesn't disabling lockdown mode for specific websites solve this though? Or do you think this partially defeats the purpose for enabling it in the first place?
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone on Saturday October 24, 2026 @11:32PM (#50228029)
Hmm - I'm sure I've had that working. I have also had problems with notifications on my Apple Watch, and I'm not sure what I did to solve that, and I've also turned Lockdown mode on and off at various times, so I'm not sure.

Still - maybe take another look? I think it should work. I'll turn lockdown mode on again and test. I can't remember why I turned it off anyway.

Huh - I didn't know that!

Your username checks out :)

I would imagine because there are small differences "sk" vs "SK", "OpenAI" vs "Openai"
Re:Android apps running native on macOS on Monday October 19, 2026 @09:59PM (#50160458)
Have you looked into the Shortcuts app automations, to see whether you can forward incoming SMS to Gmail using that?

Just a couple of days ago, I deleted a shortcut/automation to forward messages to email which I had sitting around for ages. I had disabled it, but I don't remember if I disabled it because didn't need it, or I never got it working. I know WhatsApp was harder.

Free VPN? Does ProtonVPN do what you need?

Edit: By the way, I agree about wanting Android apps. I can't remember what I feel like I'm missing now - I must have learned to live without them.

Re:Passkeys Are Not a Trap on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @09:55PM (#50098186)
I might not be as thorough as others on here in my password manager setup, but I don't think my password manager setup is as phishing resistant as passkeys.

Fairly frequently, I find myself searching for the password manager entry I want, and copying the username or password.

For a while, I was very consistent in trying to fix the URLs for that password manager entry, every time it happened. But when I'm on mobile, sometimes it's just a pain.

There are quite a few scenarios - I'm logging into an app, and it doesn't use a browser window for authentication, but also logs out after a few weeks, I've been redirected to Microsoft or similar for the login, but I haven't added microsoft.com as a URL for my work login, or GitHub (I could be wrong about this example), etc.

When I list them, these reasons seem like I should have solved them already. I used to try to keep my password manager tidy, but when I'm at 674 entries and it's growing faster than I'm cleaning.

I also think Passkeys are a confusing mess, and I don't mind the idea in addition to a password/TOTP option, but definitely not instead. I do like having it as an option for Google, where I have occasionally encountered a scenario where I login from overseas, and can't login despite having everything they can possibly want (username, password, backup email, etc.). I can't remember the exact details now, so I hope I'm not being uncharitable to Google's login/lockout process, but I doubt it!

Re:New Apple TV 4K on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @09:17AM (#50087286)
Am I the only one who wishes this had a USB port? I get frustrated with very capable devices not offering a USB port to plug in a USB drive. It's already plugged into the TV, and TVs usually have such awful software that I usually want to avoid using the built in video player. The number of times I've lugged a laptop somewhere when there is something perfectly capable that doesn't allow me to do what I want.

Apple TV, Nintendo Switch, ... I'm sure I had more examples. Both obviously capable of playing a video file, but it is not built into the software.

Re:Citroen revives the 2CV for an electric age on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @01:45AM (#50067260)
I wanted to chime in with another example - sort of related to the European hatchbacks you mentioned.

For some reason, the Peugeot 405 is way lighter than I expected. Also not much above 1000kg for some versions. I was also shocked by how nice a place it was to be in, even at highway speeds, on not particularly great roads. I don't remember anything about the road noise, but the ride quality was good.

Well off-topic: One thing I always remember, is that one time I paid attention to the number of different shades of grey there were in the interior, and it was ridiculous. Almost nothing matched anything else. And yet, it was a very pleasant place to be. That car has by far the largest discrepancy of any vehicle, between how much I mocked it and how much I liked being in it or driving it. I was just completely wrong!

That is quite nice! I don't think I ever knew that. It doesn't feel quite as nice as using the down arrow in a list/details view, but it's plenty good enough.

Anyone have the equivalent for MacOS? :) I don't have any MacOS devices handy.

I've just written another post somewhere in this thread about discovering a nice feature in KDE Plasma, and remembered my recent search for a way to output HDMI from my old iPhone without ridiculous compression, and all this Linux phone talk stated to make me have crazy thoughts about how much I want Plasma Mobile. I was all set to write "just give me Plasma Mobile on something the size of an iPhone 13 Mini, and I don't care how much doesn't work". I used a 1st Gen iPhone SE, years past where it was sensible. I can suffer.

I started to list my few, basic must-haves - aware that everyone has a different list - but my own short list got embarrassingly long, very quickly. I thought I had simple requirements!

Obvious basics which surely aren't too much to ask: email, calendar, reminder and note syncing, password manager with TOTP generator, instant messaging (willingly to compromise and have only Signal or WhatsApp), route navigation, basic browsing, half-decent camera, ...

Phone calls - so I probably need 4G and 5G...

Oh - plus uncountable other small apps or utilities that hardly seem worth mentioning: calculator, file browser, compass, voice memos, ...

And then I thought about the ever-growing list of big, ugly Apps that I could live without, but really do make my life easier. Banking apps (sigh - I hate how many of these virtually require an app), the app to unlock my apartment block door, Outlook, Teams, ...

And then I started having sensible, disappointing thoughts. Maybe I'd rather just keep the iPhone 13 Mini. I just got a new battery (and bonus screen) installed by Apple on the weekend...

But seriously, when that starts to be unusable... if I have to carry something obnoxiously large, it better run mainstream Linux and turn into a desktop when I plug a USB-C dock into it!

I am often finding things I prefer about one of the OSs (or Desktop Environments in the case of Linux) that the others don't have. I can usually see how people prefer any particular one over the other.

The usual suspects are the keyboard support in Windows (enabling the extended keyboard navigation in MacOS made some apps act very strangely), and most of the look and feel of MacOS. There have even been things I really liked in ChromeOS.

Obviously there are many nice touches in the big Linux DEs, and I would rather be in KDE Plasma than anywhere else. Because of this, I'm generally not surprised when I encounter something that is done better than Windows or MacOS.

However...!

Yesterday I was editing filenames in the file browser, and accidentally navigated down to the next file in the folder - still in filename editing mode! It was a feature I didn't even know I wanted. Suddenly, I could edit a whole list of files, just as if it were rows in a text file. Now it's Monday, and I'm back in Windows. I am unlikely to need to use that feature, but still wish I didn't know what I was missing.

Re:How California Closed the Montana License Plate Loophole on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @01:41AM (#49988721)
To me at least, the scenario of moving from Montana to Washington, and leaving cars registered to Montana, seems less wrong than the commonly abused loophole.

As I understand, a fairly large number of people register cars in Montana while never living in the state.

Edit: Just to add, maybe the scenario you described should be cracked down on, but it feels like less purposeful avoiding/evading a tax. My opinion is that could come afterwards, with more warning given to people.

Re:Example.com Just Launched the Biggest Redesign in Decades on Monday October 05, 2026 @09:46PM (#49973176)
Wait, are you saying neverssl.com now sometimes uses SSL?

If this is a joke, it's over my head. If not, I'm not knowledgeable enough in this space to pass judgement, but that would seem crazy to me. Like the owner should consider a domain name change :)

As I understood the message, the GP post stated their predicted price for Adobe, and the target price for the options they purchased, not any change in price that has already occurred.
I'm interested how this works too.

Is there some sort of specific meaning or rule in this domain that makes this problem mean something different to how it would be read at face value?

Without knowing anything extra, to me this reads:

1. Alan is young, round and kind

2. Alan is sometimes rough

3. Kind with rough skin are usually red

(Alan has not been stated to be in this category - unless "sometimes rough" implies "rough skin")

4. If red, then green

(As above, no information yet on whether Alan is red, so this gives no additional information about Alan)

5. Young, round and green are usually blue

(No information yet on whether Alan is green, so this gives no additional information about Alan)

6. Statement: Alan is not blue = ??

(No additional information since statements 1 & 2: Alan is young, round and kind, Alan is sometimes rough)

BTW - I have just numbered the statements in the order I used them, in case anyone wants to correct or discuss anything. This isn't the order they were given.

Edit: I am forgetting my predicate logic, and didn't recognise this. I think this example has more decoration (is more loosely worded) than I was ever used to. I now think "sometimes rough" and "rough skin" are intended to be interpreted as meaning the same thing.

That makes everything I wrote above this edit wrong. With the statement that Alan is rough, it is implied that Alan is usually blue

Re:Moon Rabbit on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @10:34PM (#49825511)
I've been following a Wikipedia rabbit-hole on this - I really did want to steer away from that pun, but now it's occurred to me, it seems the sensible way to say it!

The Lunar Farside Highlands Problem is interesting too! I can't believe I've never wondered why the two sides look drastically different. https://astrobiology.nasa.gov/news/early-moon-baked-in-earth...

I suppose I thought it was just an artifact of space photography - like the colour of Neptune.

Re:Moon Rabbit on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @10:14PM (#49825377)
Mid-Autumn Festival coming up, and I was extremely satisfied to learn that the rabbit is a symbol of the moon in Chinese tradition. I never saw a person or a face in the moon - only ever a rabbit.
I think I agree with the idea that it is better to turn the smartphone into the phone you want, but I think it might require a bit more work than just not installing TikTok :)

I doubt you'd see many ads in the iPhone Assistive Access mode, which can (sort of) turn an iPhone into a feature phone. You might also need to swap out a few Apple apps though. https://support.apple.com/en-sg/guide/assistive-access-iphon...
