Re:Ask HN: How would you prepare a tablet for an apocalypse on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @04:30AM (#50349845)
Personally, I would download important Wikipedia pages (e.g Water Treatment, CPR), then map data for my general area. I would then load up on a few retro game ROMs to help pass the time. I would also bring a hand crank for charging and a tough, shock resistant, and water-proof case.

Ask HN: How would you prepare a tablet for an apocalypse

Let's assume that some sort of unforeseeable event causes the electricity grid to blackout, food and water is scarce, and over 90% of the population are dead. Your tablet has 8 GB of memory and 128 GB of storage space. You can download whatever is available on the internet. External accessories are allowed, but within reason (e.g a hand crank to charge). How would you prepare?

This is actually insane, AI has gotten to the point where it can create movies... everyone just ignores this crazy fact by trying to insult it. 3 years ago we just had basic chatbots. Now this. The future is looking pretty wild!

True!
Yeah I actually came from the Switzerland post! Glad you're making it free. I wil hopefully try this out at some point today!
Re:Switzerland. Block by block. At 1:1 scale on Monday October 26, 2026 @05:02PM (#50250903)
About 0.0000000001% of the daily global production.

I've never played either of those games but there are probably conversion tools online, and if there aren't, you could try coding one with AI.

everyone spotted in the wild!

GPT-6 only just came out! The AI landscape is always on the move!
Re:The new iPad mini on Monday October 26, 2026 @03:56PM (#50250002)
As someone who occasionally browses Hacker News on a Kindle e-Reader, having a low refresh rate really doesn't matter.
Re:The new iPad mini on Monday October 26, 2026 @03:51PM (#50249944)
I think it only really matters for gamers, but seriously, who's gaming on an iPad?! Use a PC or console!

This is so useless yet so cool!
This makes so much sense, this is why I like Hacker News, you get smart people from different political views all having interesting and healthy discussions.
> shouldn't be so easy to make convincing content that seems like it is.

I agree with some of your points, but, who on Earth is getting convinced that the world is flat?

Yes, but using Tor actually can have negative effects, such as buying illegal things, like drugs, and other things that you would want to be anonymous while buying...
Heck, why not just save a ton of photos and videos on a local hard drive about how we live today, and film their reactions. I can imagine the episode name already "SHOWING MEDIEVAL ENGLAND CITIZENS YouTube VIDEOS!! (RIOT STARTED!!)"
Re:No Signs of AI Payoff Outside the Tech Sector on Sunday October 25, 2026 @05:45AM (#50229797)
For now, that is...
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone on Sunday October 25, 2026 @03:50AM (#50229252)
I dont know why anyone would enable lockdown mode, it's completely useless to have enabled when you could avoud having it on by just not clicking on suspicious files. Besides unless your a high-ranking employee or CEO or something, nobody is going to actively try and hack your phone, lockdown mode is just completely useless...
Yep, someone hand me a time machine!
This is actually a really good point that I think many people fail to understand these days!

Genuine, I do not joke about serious topics.
Re:The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable on Thursday October 22, 2026 @05:46AM (#50193252)
This is sad, loss of human life should definitely be a wake up call!
There is still hope for the dodo.

Can anyone provide a list of bad things that have happened because of climate change, genuinely curious and I want to learn from the experts here!
There aren't many professional careers left, however you can always program your own website/app without using AI, and make money through that.
Re:Ask HN: Is Wikipedia going to be obsolete soon? on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @05:38AM (#50178102)
Wikipedia has always had an app, Wikipedia is not going away, sure, it will recieve less traffic, but it has and always will be a staple of the Internet. If Wikipedia ever went down, millions of pages of human knowledge would disappear. It's not going away anytime soon.
Welcome to the Internet!
