While true, its regularly implied that the creators are being screwed by Spotify when in fact it would be between them and the rights holders and Spotify has nothing to do with that relationship / contract.

Isn't it the creators choice to sell their rights to a publisher? Is anyone holding a gun to their head?

The deal they made 8 years ago that gives the publisher all the rights is figuratively holding a gun to their head, yes.
