News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

What are the most popular / best sofware developer fonts today? Personally I am favour of Jetbrains Mono, but always interested to see if there is still typeface innovation going on after 500 years.

I made a list of most popular monospaced fonts on hacker news[1].

Since the repo description says "Awesome list" (and it is, in fact, awesome!) might I recommend tagging it with https://github.com/topics/awesome so folks not lucky enough to be in this thread can also enjoy your content?

Glad that you liked it. Will do that in future. I'm still trying to organise the info in a meaningful manner without being overwhelming.

My intent is to make a collection of just the impactful players (influential typefaces, designers and foundries) in a concise manner. I have many other lists in the pipeline (other files in the repo). Finding it really difficult to be objective/professional about (some silly) typeface when writing about it. Although I don't want to put my opinions on a list about fonts but still feel so strongly about it that most descriptions are still left blank. Hopefully I'll be able to compile a (not so long) list about fonts very soon.

Wow, thank you for the comprehensive work.

I've been using Commit Mono for the past 6 months or so and love the clarity at small sizes (for my eyes, at least). Before that, I mainly used Source Code Pro and Comic Mono. My long term friend is Bitstream Vera Sans Mono.

Not sure if this font is still popular but I started to use terminus [1] early in my career. Since then I tried multiple other fonts but nothing stuck. I used to it over the years and to overcome familiarity I would need a font which is not just better but much better.

Comic Mono.

I started using it as a bit of a joke but I actually really liked it - visually distinct, easy to read and works well at small and larger sizes.

I'm guessing very very few kids today have or will see Comic Sans. 98/XP golden years, clippy/wizard/dog, minesweeper, space cadet pinball, winamp, classic MS paint

I dunno, it's still pretty popular in primary school work sheets & notices. They're probably less likely to use it themselves but their teachers are quite likely to use it and show it to them.

You're right. Didn't consider that.

I currently use Berkeley Mono: https://berkeleygraphics.com/typefaces/berkeley-mono/

I find it pleasing to my eye, a bit retro.

Source Code Pro Semibold 9px is my default

Looks better than anything else to my eyes on the terminal

CommitMono is my current favorite.

I can only use Ubuntu Mono. For some reason it is way more dense than any other monospace font I've found. I'd like to switch it up from time to time and try new fonts, but every time I've tried I lose a significant number of lines, or I have to set the font tiny and it looks rubbish.

Are there any other fonts that are as dense as Ubuntu Mono?
