Let's make bets on how long it takes before the C&D hammer comes down hard on them.

Emphasis mine, source https://www.uspto.gov/page/about-trademark-infringement

https://trademarks.justia.com/860/49/mongodb-86049805.html

I wouldn't rule it out they will simply dispute the domain name https://my.nic.io/legal/legal_dispute.html

Hey, free publicity. News regarding C&D hammering tends to spread like wildfire in the open-source community. A boatload of publicity for a meager name change? That's a steal.

I don't see anything on on MangoDB.io that would result in commercial gain. Maybe I'm missing something though.

It’s been previously ruled that notoriety counts as a commercial gain. The authors could later add monetization to MangoDB, or leverage their increased reputation for gains.

Source? Sounds like this ruling would invalidate fair use...

Please explain how this has anything to do with fair use.

I doubt anyone will confuse Mango’s and Mongo’s. It’s clearly satire, even if it’s a real project.

This is trademark, not copyright. And no I don't think this qualifies as satire at all.

For as long as the mango in MangoDB is rendered as being pear shaped, they should do just fine.

This was actually my first thought even before continuing reading what they do.

I think they‘ll hear from lawyers sooner than later, if this gathers more attention…

They must.

If you don't protect your trademark you can lose it.
