Somewhat off topic and not condoning the editing of comments (I probably will condone the closing of boards once I know more) but:

What the hell is a pizzagate? I saw it mentioned a few times while reading the mess that is the reddit detectiving for Assange but never saw a clear description. And now it is apparently a pro-Trump thing too?

What was the logic behind calling him a pedophile for that?

Goddamnit, dang, this may be the worst administrative decision I've ever seen on HN. How is it not relevant backstory that pizzagate is the most batshit crazy conspiracy theory imaginable? It is absolutely relevant this was in response to people who have given every indication that they cannot be reasoned with.
Re:Reddit’s CEO edited comments that criticized him by Lazare on Thursday November 24, 2016 @04:26AM (#13029262)
This is going to sound hard to believe, but...

...based on zero evidence, a bunch of alt-right types decided that a pizza shop in Washington was somehow the center of some sort of bizarre satanic pedophilia cult/ring/thing, and that further that Clinton was somehow involved.

It evolved into some sort of weird meme/circlejerk/echo chamber/witchhunt/circus, centered around /r/pizzagate, complete with doxxing, stalking, physical protesters outside the shop, trending twitter hashtags, all sorts of madness

Unsurprisingly, the sub was banned. And if you choose to ban a sub focused around uncovering (I can't believe I'm writing this) Clinton's pedophile sex ring, then obviously this is because you yourself are a pedophile (and probably a Clinton supporter, which is probably worse). Why else would you help coverup Clinton's satanic pedophile sex cult?

(If you're curious, the original spark behind all this is Wikileak's release of John Podesta's emails. In them he mentioned eating pizza there. Which is clearly code for child abuse, and Podesta is sort of close to Clinton, so Podesta eating pizza is literally Clinton abusing children. No, I'm not making this up, and yes, that's the sum total of the evidence behind this. Literally, the whole thing is based on the supposition that it's so unlikely that Podesta likes pizza that it must be a codeword for child abuse, because obviously child abuse is much more understandable than liking pizza, or something.)

Re:Reddit’s CEO edited comments that criticized him by shawabawa3 on Thursday November 24, 2016 @04:41AM (#13029336)
I think it's sort of based on the fact that "cheese pizza" is 4chan slang for child porn, and there was a picture sent by podesta of an immigrant child (and her family) eating pizza with a title like "feels good" (that they helped this family, interpreted by conspiracy theorists as they molested this girl)
Re:Reddit’s CEO edited comments that criticized him by ss248 on Thursday November 24, 2016 @07:11AM (#13029911)
>"cheese pizza" is 4chan slang

This is not true actually.

FBI and some forensic science experts used it internally way back before 4chan was even created.

I find this personally interesting. I work at the national center for missing and exploited children (ncmec), and in the exploited children division (ECD) we build systems to accept reports from internet companies, do analysis and send reports to law enforcement with said analysis.

When we go out for lunch or whatever, we refer to child porn as CP. It's a bit awkward to explain we house the largest collection of CP.

Re:Reddit’s CEO edited comments that criticized him by mercer on Thursday November 24, 2016 @12:35PM (#13031522)
Odd question perhaps, but what would happen if you were hacked and that collection was stolen? Would it be considered distribution of CP? Would the legal ramifications for your organization be different from any other kind of data breach?
Re:Reddit’s CEO edited comments that criticized him by douglasisshiny on Thursday November 24, 2016 @06:27PM (#13033432)
That's a fine question. I don't know the answer to it. Obviously our system admins take security seriously.

I think I speak for a great many of us when I say that I'd like a citation for the idea that even 4chan considered "cheese pizza" a code for child pornography.

Intellectually, it appears we're cruising along at approximately the "asphinctersayswhat" level of complexity.

> I think I speak for a great many of us when I say that I'd like a citation for the idea that even 4chan considered "cheese pizza" a code for child pornography.

I've seen it referred to, jokingly, o 4chan and other forums.

For people who are baffled and/or puzzled, it's based on the acronym - child pornography - cp - cheese pizza.

> Post CP is an acronym in which CP can have a variety of meanings. Initially used as an acronym for 4chan posters to indirectly mention or request a child pornography thread, in later years the acronym became commonly associated with the posting of other subjects with the same first letters (C & P, most notably “Cheese Pizza”) to parody prohibited request threads or to troll those who hope to find child pornography.

> There was also "u jelly?," a way of asking if someone was jealous, and "cheese pizza," or "CP", slang for child porn. More shrewd 4chan users would start discussion threads about literal cheese pizza, including photos of pizzas, and add hidden links to a child porn archive within the image code -- accessed by opening the pizza images in a text program instead of an image viewer.

Re:Reddit’s CEO edited comments that criticized him by tothepixel on Thursday November 24, 2016 @11:31AM (#13031138)
The usage of code words and symbols by Comet Pizza and Besta Pizza are mapped to an FBI document that was uncovered. There's also been strange phrases uncovered in the Podesta emails that seem to indicate that code words are in use. Additionally, people have found hidden data in JPGs sent around, which appear to be hashes that were placed after the closing JPG headers. Not sure I believe any of it, but it's definitely interesting.
Re:Reddit’s CEO edited comments that criticized him by xeeeeeeeeeeenu on Thursday November 24, 2016 @12:01PM (#13031295)
Could you link that FBI document explaining pedo-slang that Podesta was allegedly using?
Re:Reddit’s CEO edited comments that criticized him by BickNowstrom on Thursday November 24, 2016 @02:37PM (#13032287)
AFAIK there is no such document. The only sourcing for the slang terms was an anonymous 4chan post.

    “hotdog” = boy

    “pizza” = girl

    “cheese” = little girl

    “pasta” = little boy

    “ice cream” = male prostitute

    “walnut” = person of colour

    “map” = semen

    “sauce” = orgy
https://twitter.com/JaredWyand/status/794284672675147776

The FBI document detailing the symbols can be found here: https://wikileaks.org/wiki/FBI_pedophile_symbols

The similarities were rather striking. One pizza place even changed their logo shortly after the comparisons were drawn. This only added more fuel to the fire. http://i.imgur.com/GIRxh8r.jpg

Myself being a huge fan of conspiracy theory I've seen this before: the minds become focussed on finding evidence, discarding Occam's razor, and mining for all the nuggets. What remains are coincidences that appear too good to be random. Compare with the "backwards playing record hidden messages" hype. Once someone points it out to you, your mind starts hearing it too.

P.S.: The "hashes" found in the .jpg images were a dead end / the result of pareidolia.

They actually did, and then they tried to find connections between the two. Turning up stuff like:

https://twitter.com/ClintonGlobal/status/651606553884258304

(A Unilever and Clinton Foundation cooperation found in https://wikileaks.org/podesta-emails/emailid/1596)

and some older abuse charges brought up against people connected with Unilever.

See also: https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:AfaAe2...

Also consider the possibility that the pedo symbology was inspired by the ice cream logo (and not the other way around).

But most likely just a (meaningful) coincidence. Hearts and spirals are common design elements after all.

Pizzagate is a conspiracy theory that spawned from the Podesta email leaks that cover a pedophile ring that involves several government officials.

There's a decent amount of circumstantial evidence for it, but I personally still think a bit of a stretch.

Re:Reddit’s CEO edited comments that criticized him by tptacek on Thursday November 24, 2016 @08:17AM (#13030158)
Is it possible that this is all a misunderstanding based on some odd subculture's redefinition of the term "circumstantial evidence"?
Re:Reddit’s CEO edited comments that criticized him by DanBC on Thursday November 24, 2016 @08:31AM (#13030219)
The "evil paedophile elites are kidnapping children to abuse them" (alternatively, CPS kidnap children to sell for adoption) conspiracy theory has existed for a long time.

Six years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dh-dNAby174

Four years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5LyzuVUweU

Eight years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_C75RO6LL4

Once the conspiracy theory exists you're going to get a mix of people who really believe it finding subreddits to share "proof"; trolls who like the lulz; people who don't know and don't care but who hate that politician and will share anything negative about them; and baffled people on the outside who can't tell the difference and can't understand how anyone can think that politicians order children for abuse by email.

What was the Cleeveland Ritual Abuse Scandal? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleveland_child_abuse_scandal (See also Rochdale, Orkney, Broxtowe, etc.)

The sad fact is that child abuse is fantastically common, and by devoting so much time to bogus bullshit we're failing to protect children who are being harmed right now, mostly by their relatives.

Re:Reddit’s CEO edited comments that criticized him by patrickg_zill on Thursday November 24, 2016 @02:12PM (#13032162)
From my observation and IMHO, pedophiles do make use of networks of people to find additional kids to abuse; sometimes it is via a social network with lax supervision (trust by regular people of a predator), and sometimes, an actual group of pedophiles participating.

Of course 2 or more people participating in certain acts, or even assisting a pedophile means "conspiracy".

In PizzaGate, I am keeping an open mind, and not scoffing; mainly due to some rather weird Instagram pictures and comments that used to be publicly available, that were linked to Comet Ping Pong and/or the owner. They were quite... unusual.

Snopes has not "debunked" anything. Once, the couple who run the Snopes blog were good at investigating urban legends and such. In recent years they have gotten more political and more obvious in their selective coverage to fit an agenda.

Note, I am 100% against harassing the guy and his business, but you cannot deny his instagram had the pictures on it. Does that justify a barrage of internet hate and accusations of criminality? No. But lying about Instagram pictures being faked when they weren't is also not helpful.

This is an edited screenshot of your post [0] with my personal user style applied. This is an archive.is link of your post [1]. Feel free to edit or delete this post. The edited screenshot should not and cannot be trusted to be valid. The archive link, on the other hand, can be trusted to have been a 3rd party 'screenshot' of your post at the time the archive was taken.

Unless you are suggesting archive.is is a malicious actor or has any known cases of editing or changing archives made using its service. To my knowledge, there is no evidence or reason to believe either accusation.

The archive.is links are not "created" by 4chan or Reddit users. The links are created by request of the service. It shouldn't matter who requests the service as long as the service is reliable.

If the NYT investigative report team claims the archive.is links are doctored - I'd lose my faith in the NYT's ability to investigate as they have clearly failed in their duty.

If someone is molested and the perpetrators also conduct a whacky satanic ritual during the act, the victim is going to have a hell of a hard time being believed if they come forth. Hell, we see it in this thread with people dismissing the whole thing based on that alone.

Don't get me wrong, I think the evidence for it is a stretch, but there is some objectively weird stuff in the emails that do not make sense if taken literally.

Perfectly reasonable view of things if you ask me. I remember watching this thing spawn in real time during the release of Podesta's emails. There were 4 things IMHO that made this into a big deal for the_donald: 1) #SpiritCooking, 2) the "Pizza Related Map", 3) Bill Clinton's alleged trips to "pedo island without the secret service", and 4) Some have interpreted Joe Biden's interaction with children as creepy. Then, people started looking at old emails in a whole new light and realized there appeared to be coded messages involving children in them. That's kind of where I stopped tracking personally because the signal to noise ratio is pretty low.

Jesus Christ, this is gets at exactly the Pizzagate fake news phenomena. Right here. This very thread and the other thread. The reason why people dismiss this as crazy talk, is because there's literally no evidence for this ever happening, and every time these types of allegations has been brought up before, they've been completely discredited.

Your proposition hinges on replacing the the axiom that extraordinary claims need extraordinary evidence, with extraordinary claims are more plausible to mundane ones.

Satanic child abuse is an old moral panic from the 1980s, of which nothing ever existed. Seriously, they're all discredited. Some even involved people claiming preschool teachers were fucking literal demons while riding on brooms.[0]

I toss out a joke about the completely discredited claim that Podesta is a warlock because of a mention of world famous artist Marina Abramović.[1] But of course, the fault is on me, because this is HN, and of course it's going to be treated as gospel.

But hell, what do I know. I'm contemplating ascending to the Aetheral plane because I've been listening to backmaksed Judas Priest[2] and playing Dungeons and Dragons[3].

Part of the reason we're getting conspiracy theories like this is probably that John Podesta conducting satanic ceremonies is kind of plausible. He (or his brother, I forget) is friends with an artist who likes to carry out elaborate ceremonies involving blood and bodily fluids, and helps fund her work (possibly stuff that's less intentionally controversial, though). While that's technically not satanic, the need to qualify the kind of blood magic he's linked to makes it hard to have a sense of what's realistic anymore.

You will be told it's just fake news. Move along, nothing to see. As to calling spez that, I suppose it's just the angry response at the r/pizzagate subreddit being removed.

Podesta has some messages where he uses code words. https://wikileaks.org/podesta-emails/emailid/32795 That's why people started digging around in the first place.

Conspiracy is hard work- eating, sleeping, those conspirators are superman/woman who can do without.

If Conspirators hold you capable of everything, its sort of flattering - in a darth Vader, Astmatic sort of way..

Why does a handkerchief have a map on it that's pizza related? It's a coded message.

The only thing that can be debated at this point is if / how to decode the message. I don't believe someone could make a good faith argument saying that it's not an encoded message.

This is what gets me as well. Yes it all sounds crazy and a bit of a reach, but what in the hell is a pizza related map on a handkerchief, seriously?

Doesn't sound too out of line for gift shop kitsch to me. "Old timey map featuring famous longstanding business" is definitely a pattern I've seen in promotional artwork.

I have seen many weird ties and handkerchiefs... Why is it such a stretch to believe that there exists a design in which there is a map with either different famous pizza shops or a map with different regional pizza types on it? My boss had a tie with pizza on it years ago. Either he's a pedo or perhaps the more reasonable explanation is that it's just a stupid tie with pizza on it.
