Cars make you broke, average cost of car ownership for an American is $8K per year.
It stigmatizes inquiry, it's shorthand for 'heretic', pariah.
I try to avoid using Orwellian terms.

I always intended to read "Missing 411" after hearing the author speak on the radio, but haven't made time for it.

Can you quantify that at all? How much of a discount is there baked in due to subsidies?

As I understand it the innovation is at the zoning level. In order to affect change you need to change all of these zoning laws, and the keyword is Form Based Code, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Form-based_code

Encouraging info from the wiki: The Cincinnati Form-Based Code adopted in 2013 is designed to be applied citywide in an incremental way, neighborhood by neighborhood. The code establishes transect zones and specifies standards for transects, building types, frontage types, walkable neighborhoods, and thoroughfares that can be adapted to each neighborhood.[4][5]

Shouting "racism!" is a good way to shut down the discussion

Shouting "culture!" doesn't really work as well.

Vaccines sometimes cause grave injury and the vaccine court pays out. Some people aren't so keen to press their luck.

Then the media would just hide behind the fact that the fabricated evidence was coming from the intel agencies.

Also the term 'filter-bubble' which acts as if conservatives are simply not exposed to liberal viewpoints.

Re:How the Anti-Vaxxers Are Winning on Thursday February 16, 2017 @04:05AM (#13658574)
If you are injured by a vaccine you can't sue the manufacturer, you have to go though the Vaccine Court. Meanwhile the vaccines themselves can enumerate some hideous side effects.

Re:The Happy City and Our $20 Trillion Opportunity on Sunday February 12, 2017 @09:54AM (#13628577)
I think people are already making a big impact by moving back to urban centers, increasing the demand for transit and housing. I'm astonished by the number of new developments going up in Minneapolis.
One of the great cities of Europe, maybe Milan, (so many to choose from) because I love walk-able cities. Toronto is very walk-able, so I think you're already in a nice spot.
I've seen plenty of evidence of paid protesters. Not sure why you have to act like a jerk.

Re:Why Silicon Valley Wouldn't Work Without Immigrants on Wednesday February 08, 2017 @11:04AM (#13599261)
Counterpoint: Tel Aviv has an active tech economy despite a difficult immigration environment. You probably just need first world infrastructure, capital, and low levels of government corruption.
Re:Ask HN: What are some 'must watch' talks? on Monday February 06, 2017 @10:51AM (#13580520)
Does anyone have a link to the talk something along the lines of ~'the power of stupid ideas' -- the beginning was about this shop that petitioned the London bus authority to move the bus stop closer to this shop to create a virtual wall. I only saw half of it and I'd like to see the other half.
Some time ago there was a thread about some app that got popular which the dev busted out in a few days because he knew his way around heroku hackathon-starter / node.js https://github.com/sahat/hackathon-starter

Great point, I've not seen this point mentioned elsewhere in these types of discussions.
