News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

dang

washedup is right, of course, that the community is many people with many views (though the point should be made less snarkily). Of course HN disagrees with itself since it's not a self to begin with.

I think there's another factor: it takes time to find the best ways of using such new tools. This is something the community is working out slowly (as is society generally) and this is naturally a lagging phenomenon.

Seeing generated sites like OP and karpathy's HackerTube (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50319510) which look good and don't have the obvious-LLM sameiness that so many others do, is an interesting step along this way.

Re:Anthropic's growth just flattened (really) on Monday November 02, 2026 @06:47PM (#50345914)
On HN, can you please not be snarky? We're trying for something a bit different than internet mean here.

The idea is: if you have a substantive point, make it thoughtfully; if not, please don't comment until you do.

https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html

Ok we'll unban the domain. Thanks!
Can you please not fulminate on HN, regardless of how wrong other people are or you feel they are?

This is in the site guidelines: https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html.

Edit: and it looks like we've had to ask you this multiple times already.

You're condemning them for spending all their time making the product work instead of...focusing on their website? Bit strange to call someone a scammer for doing the opposite of what scammers do.
I appreciate the kind reply!

A comment like the GP quickly pattern-matches as snark and dismissal because those are so common on the internet. In other words, if you don't intend your comment that way, you need to do something to disambiguate this. Your follow-up comment does this nicely.

The reason this happens is that we all tend to take our intent for granted and forget that it exists in our head and isn't accessible to others unless we make it explicit. https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&que...

This also leads to a fascinating (to me at least!) phenomenon where the reply to a moderation comment (i.e. your follow-up here) makes explicit the thought which the commenter meant to communicate. What's fascinating is how different this is from what they originally posted. I call this the rebound effect. https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&que...

Scam in this context would mean selling people a product or technology that won't ever exist. This is the opposite of that.
They're taking pre-orders. Obviously the product doesn't exist yet. The tech is real.

You can like or dislike generated images (if that's what they are—I haven't looked) but this post has nothing to do with scamming anyone, and given the wealth of technical information in the thread, including a video showing the product under development, that seems like a really weird claim to arrive at.

(Don't worry, we're not going to ban you.)

A tasteless sex reference is one thing, but shallow-curmudgeonly dismissal of new work is the real sin here!

Wow that's fascinating. I've added that bit to your text above - I hope that's ok! It answers what was emerging as a sort of mini-FAQ.

Edit: the more that I think about it the cooler and more important this feature seems!

It's better. I've turned off the flag.
> I like it but I don't want it, I'm not sure, it feels weird and cringy.

"Please don't post shallow dismissals, especially of other people's work. A good critical comment teaches us something."

https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html

p.s. Especially please don't do this when a thread is brand new. Such comments are the easiest to post, and therefore the quickest to appear, but by posting them, you steer the discussion straight away from the curious, thoughtful conversation we want here. Threads are extremely sensitive to initial conditions, so this is important.

Quite a few variations of this story, if one can call it that, have been posted already. (Edit: I listed them in a collapsed reply to this comment, if anyone cares.)

It's obviously a riler-upper and therefore off topic for Hacker News. In fact, with its revved-up linkbait title and ragepilled content, it's an exemplar of what this site is not for.

I think of you as a good HN contributor, but you've been posting a lot of unsubstantive comments lately, and breaking the site guidelines in other ways too. Can you please stop doing this, and return to using HN in the intended spirit? Your substantive, thoughtful points are welcome, but not comments like this current one, nor these (to pick a few examples):

Could you please stop posting unsubstantive comments and flamebait? You've unfortunately been doing it repeatedly. It's not what this site is for, and destroys what it is for.

If you wouldn't mind reviewing https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html and taking the intended spirit of the site more to heart, we'd be grateful.

Yikes. We've changed the URL from https://www.ajupress.com/view/20261028171670308 (and banned that site). I replaced it with the article that Google returns for the title, which looks like it might be the original source, or at least closer to it.

I think the data dump used to generate the site might be out of date? Bummer, if so, because I was hoping this could be an ongoing thing.

Please submit that (if you want to)! It's short but in a good way and I think we could use a thread about this.

If you do, let us know and we'll put it in the SCP (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26998308), so it will get a random placement on HN's front page.

We've banned this account for repeatedly (exclusively?) posting unsubstantive comments and ignoring our requests to stop.

If you don't want to be banned, you're welcome to email [email protected] and give us reason to believe that you'll follow the rules in the future. They're here: https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html.

That question showed up elsewhere in the thread too. I'm guessing that the data dump used to make it was a one-shot and now out of date?

Hopefully karpathy can fix it! I've got an idea for a new thread to suck in a whole bunch more interesting videos, but it won't be as fun if they don't show up on hackertube
