Seems like an interesting project, I think I will keep an eye out for a secondhand machine and give this a go. There are a couple of videos comparing the features like pressure profiling and temperature control to a much more expensive machine. Impressive.

With the shopping cart example, I'm not sure I understand how session identity can be preserved if I clear my local storage/cookies?
Re:Cooking the Books: Optimizing Purchase and Use of Ingredients on Wednesday January 17, 2018 @02:09PM (#16170761)
The closest thing I have found are the Sainsbury's meal plans which are weekly [1]. However as far as I can tell there is no optimisation to limit waste and the number of ingredients.

Re:Cooking the Books: Optimizing Purchase and Use of Ingredients on Wednesday January 17, 2018 @01:47PM (#16170560)
This is fantastic -

In the UK there has been a rise in 'cookery boxes' companies who send boxes of ingredients which you can use to cook a few different recipes.

However there is not many options in the market for a service where you can simply subscribe to the recipes (and generated shopping list) and then cook yourself. This could be based from an index of already available recipes online. Minimising the necessary ingredients (and therefore potential waste, and shop complexity), whilst maximising recipe variety is hard to do without a lot of planning. Combining this with the ability to favour and remove certain ingredients for example for preference, or intolerance would be really something indeed!

Is there an example of what a landing page would look like?
Hey robinhood - Are you considering packaging this up as a standalone iphone app?

Ask HN: Where to find OS translation projects?

My friend is has a masters in translation looking for open source projects to help on. I suggested she looked online, as some of the projects I've been involved in have all needed translation at some point. However now I've come to look for a project for her I can't find one. When I used to look at localisation files there were just a set of structured text files. I guess there have now been...

Do any consumer phones already have support for Galileo?
Re:Worried About the Privacy of Your Messages? Download Signal on Thursday December 08, 2016 @10:54AM (#13131065)
I ditched Signal in favour of WhatsApp given I believe the tech behind it was the same and the fact that a lot of my contacts are already on WhatsApp. The NYT article indicates that WhatsApp is still able to collect more information than Signal does collect.

This is an interesting point - If Apple decided that the requirements set out by the UK Government were at odds with its ethos and chose not to comply -

Would this result in a sales/import ban?

How would this effect devices already in circulation?

This would certainly educate the populous that the conversations happening in parliament and the media do/are having a direct impact into their daily lives - especially if it means someone is considering banning their favorite phone.

I'll preorder the book, interestingly it wont be available until May in the UK but Amazon will ship from the US.

Can anyone recommend any other similar books in the meantime?

Are products listed for sale only visible through shared links/listings? Or will this be a Craigslist/gum-tree type affair?
Re:Ask HN: How do you manage your passwords? on Wednesday March 11, 2015 @01:41PM (#9185376)
I've used Lastpass, and Password Box in the past, however i now use Dashlane, i've found that it has a good UI and works well.
"NSA has VPNs in Vulcan death grip" http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2014/12/nsa-has-vpns-in-v...

This again leads to the disempowerment issue, each measure seems to have been systematically either compromised or weakened. I look forward to new solutions such as the Dark Mail Alliance. The issue i have is that any solution needs to be very 'consumer friendly' as unless both parties are using a secure system taking extra measures is almost pointless. eg. i take steps to chose an email provider who doesn't share their data, or is outside of the NSA/GCHQ jurisdiction but then i have to send an email to an @gmail address i know that those steps i have taken are compromised by the other party.

Dispersing your activity around several different services is surely better than just using a one-stop-shop or all in one solution?
I'm keeping my eye on EFF's developments on their CA.

It's hard to totally avoid Microsoft/Google etc absolutely, but by not buying into them completely at least it's security through obscurity.

mailbox.org seems like another EU (Germany) based email startup. Email is a very big hard-to-deal-with issue, however the Dark Mail Technical Alliance and services such as those already mentioned are taking steps to making email more secure.

It is interesting you mention Telegram, i have started using that with contacts of mine who have also adopted it, i'm not totally convinced it is secure, but does seem a better alternative to WhatsApp.

Further to this i've secured the domains i host content on, not because the content needs securing in terms of handling financial data etc, but because i believe that the wider encryption is used the harder it will be to operate global 'catch-all' surveillance.

ref: http://darkmail.info http://mailbox.org https://telegram.org

Glen Greenwald gave a TED talk about a similar point of view. http://www.ted.com/talks/glenn_greenwald_why_privacy_matters...
Disempowerment is a common theme here - it is the case that the 'general public' (read majority non-technical) are concerned about the current and future ramifications of this surveillance but feel disempowered because of how widespread it is, and i think this is because it is difficult to make reasonable changes in the immediate term to effect anything. This is of course excluding publicising/talking about the issues from a political point of view.

If telecoms company A proved to be betraying the trust of its customers, customers might find it reasonable to move their custom to telecoms company B - however the issue is that if both telecoms company A and B are both guilty of surveillance there is no feasible choice for the consumer.

The same can be said about political parties. If all major political parties support mass surveillance there is no viable alternative to support.

Ask HN: Since CitizenFour, have you changed the way you conduct yourself online?

Ask HN: Since watching CitizenFour, or previously reading about the widespread surveillance conducted by governments - what changes have you made to how you conduct your life online? Have you adopted any new practices, or stopped or started using any new services? It would be interesting to see what effect this has had on how people, especially technically included people behave and conduct...

'A Dark Room' is an excellent game, minimal interface and a widening world. Have you found anything else similar and of remark?
Small St. espresso is worth a look, although I'm not sure it would be that good for working from for a long time - but it depends on what you are working on.
Re:Announcing the FastMail Calendar on Monday June 23, 2014 @07:40AM (#7931337)
I switched about a year ago now (from Google Apps), and very happy with the email service. However this and 'contact sync' (coming soon) will make it a very real possibility for a lot more people. Well done fastmail! At the moment I still have my calendar with iCloud, contacts with Google and email with FastMail.
