Re:FreeDOS 1.4 Is Here on Tuesday April 22, 2025 @09:04AM (#43761616)
Maybe Borland Turbo C? I also think Visual Basic for DOS had a text-mode UI editor.
In widescreen, the UI is unusable and gets very small on a video page for some reason. The overall design is genuinely overwhelming and feels like a bunch of components pasted in without any thought put into layout or scale.
It's a thin ChatGPT wrapper with AI-generated testimonial videos.
Re:Show HN: Monkeys.zip – 3000 Monkeys on Typewriters on Thursday April 03, 2025 @06:58PM (#43576481)
Is the plan to monetize this with paid 'gear' upgrades & 'claiming'? Feels a lot like an NFT project from 3 years ago.
Re:Readable File Sharing on Sunday March 23, 2025 @05:53PM (#43456199)
Using a subdomain as a file URL feels vaguely wrong and I don't think it's very clear to the recipient what they're actually clicking on, but the UX is at least smooth. I don't think /file/[keyword] would be that bad.

Maybe avoid using AI art with mangled hands and a visually noisy generated logo for your branding.
I've had issues with some software & games not being able to get a proper display context and refusing to start.
I think this originates from Isaacson's biography and was about the iPod?
Re:HTTrack Website Copier on Tuesday March 18, 2025 @09:33PM (#43407433)
Literally any modern social media, YouTube comments, anything using client-side rendering frameworks
Re:PeerTube v7.1 Is Out on Tuesday March 18, 2025 @09:23PM (#43407361)
I also don't understand having a search interface not front-and-center and under the weird sub-brand of "SepiaSearch".

ArchiveBox works decently with Javascript and uses a headless browser, can be deployed with Docker

Re:GIMP 3.0 Released on Monday March 17, 2025 @09:13PM (#43394716)
Krita still doesn't have a usable text tool or a way to change an image's color space.

To be replaced with a system providing a standardized method to give law enforcement easier "secure access" to your redacted personal information.
By 'note' I guess they mean rich text editor.
This just looks like a ChatGPT wrapper with a button that prompts it to explain a sentence in English. I don't see how this is better than an intentionally designed language-learning course, or just practicing a language by talking to any other language model. This does no actual teaching.
I thought that was just for unlocked bootloaders, I've never encountered issues having sideloading enabled.
Re:YouTube, when the walls fell [video] on Saturday March 08, 2025 @11:00PM (#43306074)
Title's a Star Trek reference, and the video is a retrospective on YouTube, the state of algorithmic feeds, and its alternatives. It's largely an endorsement of Floatplane and the creator talks about moving to that platform.
Re:The Return of Digg, a Star of an Earlier Internet Era on Wednesday March 05, 2025 @04:50PM (#43273072)
I loved i.reddit, and really miss sites that were actually optimized for performance and low-end devices. It being removed kind of felt like a final nail in the coffin for that whole era. I think HTML Gmail was killed around that time too.

AACS.

They don't play on Chrome for Android, either.
I think the 360 backwards compatibility is a mix of emulation and certain parts being disassembled & recompiled for x86 with some black magic.

edit: Here's an interview with platform lead Bill Stillwell that goes into a lot more detail https://www.eurogamer.net/digitalfoundry-2017-xbox-one-x-bac...

The cat is cute but I'd rather not have it running in front of the text while I'm trying to read and use my cursor.
Re:Calendar.txt on Friday February 28, 2025 @02:19PM (#43209244)
I'd be way more comfortable with a VPN or some kind of access-gating for a personal calendar compared to just exposing it on the web and relying on obscurity..

Re:History 2701 Wiki on Sunday February 16, 2025 @07:03PM (#43073197)
Fandom.com's UI somehow continues to get worse every time I have to use it.. On a mobile browser it's not even obvious what the purpose of the wiki even is, just showing a grid of Trending Articles with the actual main page hidden in a dropdown at the very bottom of the page
Did you write this with a language model or do you just like emojis, numbered lists, and went out of your way to insert an em-dash?
Re:It's Time to Rethink 6G on Thursday February 13, 2025 @09:57AM (#43036488)
"Streaming" as most people think of it is "heavily compressed video optimized for low bandwidth being piped over a network", usually with no user choice of resolution, encoding, or playback settings
