Re:A unique collection of laptops adorned with creative stickers on Wednesday November 12, 2025 @12:47PM (#45903214)
I buy a hard case, then put the stickers on that. Then I can pop it off if I need to be in a more "professional" environment or if I want to upgrade/sell it.

Absolutely. Some of us see (or at least I see) the level of discussion and feel it would be hard for me to say something worthwhile that sounds kinda smart. So I mostly lurk while being grateful for those who do write incredibly insightful comments.

Show HN: Garden Planting Reminders via Email

https://rootedreminders.com/

As a gardener, I frequently forget when to put things in my garden. My pepper seeds are always started too late and I get too excited to plant on the first nice day even if it's not the ideal team for every plant.So I built a little tool where you can enter your zip to find your frost dates (or if you're outside the US, you can manually add your frost dates).Then you can pick from a list of...

Re:Show HN: Remember when to plant things in your garden on Thursday March 09, 2023 @08:59AM (#35081196)
I built this because I always forget that even though it's freezing cold outside, I should probably start thinking about starting my tomato, pepper and other seeds indoors.

You can add your zip code and select the plants you want to grow throughout the season. The app will then remind you when you need to seed/transplant/sow everything based on your frost date.

Hopefully this helps someone else, too!

Re:Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (March 2023) on Thursday March 02, 2023 @04:39PM (#35002469)
I always forget when to plant things in my garden so I made a little tool for myself. You set your zip, then pick your plants, and it will tell you your upcoming planting dates.

Re:Ask HN: What are your “scratch own itch” projects? on Sunday November 13, 2022 @09:08AM (#33583199)
Amazon has been really hit or miss for me lately, so I wanted to find other sites that sell high quality stuff and don’t have fake reviews or counterfeits. I looked for somewhere that had a list of them but couldn’t find much. So I’ve started a small collection of the ones I know and like. https://zochre.com

In the past I’ve built more complicated products to scratch itches (mostly PM related). This one is kinda fun cause it’s so stupidly simple.

Lately I've been buying directly from the brands I like more and more often. Sure, it may take an extra couple of days for shipping, but I feel it's worth it. Plus a lot of stores now have shopify pay and other payment options that make it just as fast to checkout.

I've been keeping track of the stores I like in a side project (https://zochre.com/) although it doesn't have any electronics stores yet.

When I'm in clamshell mode, I love having an external trackpad. I used to have a trackball mouse which was decent enough - it's just that it was a pain when working in Adobe products & Figma and wanted gestures. I see no need to go back to a regular mouse or use anything else.

Personally, I haven't noticed any fatigue. I also do have tap to click mode on which I feel helps.

Re:Starlink for RVs on Monday May 23, 2022 @08:10PM (#31486446)
We took our dishy out on an RV trip last weekend and it was great. Put it in the back of the truck and had great reception the entire time. I'm not sure I'll be able to go back to terrible RV park WiFi ever again.
I recently went through the ClickUp onboarding and clicked skip on all the onboarding tutorials that popped up. After avoiding them, they hit me with an incentive of $10 towards my subscription, so I did land up watching them. So I guess it worked.
Why not both? There's a board certification in clinical informatics where the current opportunities are endless. My partner is over 40, board certified in CI and anesthesia, and makes damn good money. There are plenty of opportunities for people who enjoy problem solving in both medicine and tech — plus, there's a whole lot less ageism.
Re:Ask HN: Was Your Turkey Dry? on Saturday November 27, 2021 @07:44AM (#29359738)
This year I...

- brined in a mix of salt, sugar and herbs for around 36 hours

- injected a butter mix under the skin (this one was my partner's idea so I'm not sure how if affected the outcome, but I suppose it couldn't hurt)

- fried the turkey in peanut oil

It came out really, really well. Process improvement for next year is to remember it took a bit longer than expected for the oil to heat up so it threw off timing with all the side dishes, so get the oil heated before you need it. I'd also be curious if buying an organic bird changes the taste.

The turkey was always dry during my Thanksgivings growing up, so when I hosted my own Thanksgiving dinner, I was determined to get it right. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

I'm working on a little side project where you can share snippets of your design to test them for clarity (5-second tests, basically). The idea is you can go through everyone's designs, answer some questions about them, and then get feedback on yours.

Not sure if it'd be helpful for what you're looking for (and I'm just getting started so there aren't a lot of posts yet — working on that), but hey, worth a shot. IsThisClear.com

I figured some results will be spammy, plus it could allow for a paid plan later down the line where folks could bypass having to take other people’s exams

I was tired of paying a bunch of money for 5-second user tests on the bigger UI testing platforms, so I made a free option. https://isthisclear.com/
Re:Ask HN: Do You Journal a Lot? on Wednesday December 16, 2020 @02:49PM (#25447590)
Every day for the last 1.5 years!

I write it in a running text document with the latest entry at the top. Keeping it simple has made it easy to keep up with.

I've settled into the following format.

* date

* how yesterday went and any notable events

* what I'm hoping to get done today

* as of lately, local covid #s

* 3 things I'm grateful for

* the top headline of the day

* a quick rating of my current "thinking power", energy, mood, and how I'm feeling physically

Re:Ask HN: How to be productive while travelling? on Thursday September 24, 2020 @05:20PM (#24583814)
Can you write up a journal entry on your phone or in a notebook? Maybe some thoughts on yesterday and how you're feeling today.

I've found journaling to be a great productivity enhancer, especially since I can do a debrief of the last month and see where things went well and where they did not so I know what to do (and not do) again.

Re:Ask HN: What’s your daily/weekly routine? on Sunday August 02, 2020 @11:03PM (#24033823)
I’m using the one in Krissy Moehl’s book. So far, so good! It feels pretty balanced.
Re:Ask HN: What’s your daily/weekly routine? on Sunday August 02, 2020 @11:01PM (#24033811)
I work for myself, so I definitely have the benefit of a flexible schedule. I used to be a product director, now I’m working on building a tool to scratch an itch I had in my past role.
Re:Ask HN: What’s your daily/weekly routine? on Sunday August 02, 2020 @12:34PM (#24029670)
* Wake up somewhere around 7am. Coffee.

* Meditate (10-30 minutes depending on how I feel)

* Light yoga/stretching + daily journal

* Whatever workout is on the ultra marathon training plan

* shower then get to work

* 1pm lunch

* back to work

* if afternoon drowsiness sets in then its nap time, if not, keep working

* cook & eat while watching some tv

* depending on how I'm feeling either get some more work done or just relax

* get ready for bed + read + sleep usually around 10:30. I like to sleep.

Sundays are for debriefing last week and planning the next. On bad days, replace the work with playing animal crossing, cleaning, mindlessly browsing the internet, and switching between online courses & YouTube

Re:Remote work has its perks, until you want a promotion on Thursday May 28, 2020 @06:47PM (#23343891)
My last role was remote. I was only promoted after a big onsite meeting that went really well. If that in-person meeting had never happened, it would have been really hard to get that promotion.
Re:Show HN: Remotehh – Virtual hangouts for remote workers on Friday February 14, 2020 @09:49AM (#22326983)
Hey y'all. I've been working remotely for the last 7 years now and while I love it, there are definitely some drawbacks to it — most notably, loneliness. In past roles, I tried to get ahead of this by hosting remote happy hours where a group of us just hang out and chat about non-work things.

I created this site last weekend to help others find similar groups. It is still a work in progress, so let me know what you'd like to see in something like this. I'm hoping to get a few groups set up soon.

Re:Ask HN: Good solution for storing notes/excerpts from books? on Wednesday January 01, 2020 @06:16PM (#21931458)
Readwise is great for revisiting kindle highlights and notes
I've been wanting to journal more consistently, so I set up an automator task to open up my journal app at the same time everyday (typically sometime during my daily, so I come back to my computer and it's there just waiting for me).
