Re:Linux Load Averages: Solving the Mystery on Tuesday August 08, 2017 @04:21PM (#14962114)
There is one, a [hwrng] process, but I don't think that's it. It's also in D state on other virtual machines on the same host without this symptom.

(The process is probably from virtio-rng.)

OT: what could cause a system to have a load of 1 when idle?

I have one (unimportant) Linux system that idles with a load of exactly 1. The issue persists through reboots. It is a KVM virtual machine and qemu confirms nothing is going on in the background.

Any ideas how to find out what's causing it?

So many comments here and not a single mention of "Slashdot Beta". It was a huge disaster, every single article had complaints about it while it was in effect.

They changed owners shortly after and it's still a running joke years later.

Humans are so cute. The reason you haven't met us yet is simply that you're not ready. How do you expect.to love your galactic neighbour if you can't even love YOUR OWN PLANET.

Please stop killing each other and make Earth great again (sorry). We can help you build the next one.

Signed, Your friendly neighbourhood aliens

Hate to disappoint you, but I have to try this together with NFQUEUE to power a distributed computing cluster.

I will even use the lease information to implement a host-side firewall, BCP-38 style!

While Red Hats individual kernel patches are not available, they distribute the "squashed" sources under the terms of the GPL.

I've been toying with GuixSD recently and really love the immutable system configurations.

There are some caveats, but I would not mind using it on production servers. Sadly I haven't been able to convince my colleagues yet.

GNU is more of an umbrella than an organization with research and goals. FSF is more focused, but mainly towards industry.

If you create a decent Siri/Alexa clone and license it under GPL, I'm sure GNU would be happy to adopt it. :)

That said, a quick web search dug up these:

Re:Ask HN: How can I get better at bash? on Monday June 26, 2017 @08:51PM (#14641713)
I've started to dislike /usr/bin/env too. At least use -i. Otherwise you're one PATH manipulation away from executing a malicious program as your intended shell.
While I think you are missing the point, I'm baited by the proposition that devops requires paying constant attention to smartphones.

I use "Tasker" on Android to check for my name in the on-call calendar and change notification settings accordingly. Otherwise it's dead silent when at work and very low volume when connected to a wifi.

For others who are confused about this, they probably mean:

...and not the famous Hollywood drunkard known as Charles Bukowski.

What good is E2E if you are going to send the plaintext home anyway? Doing these requests on the device is stupid, but proxying them through FB servers would border on malicious.

From my understanding of the new EU General Data Protection Rules (GDPR), it will even make rsync.net unusable for most EU companies starting 2018.
> Are there any open hardware computers of comparable computing power?

IBMs POWER processors are comparable to high-end Xeons and the specifications are entirely open.

I'd love to see a new "Talos" effort in light of recent events: https://www.crowdsupply.com/raptor-computing-systems/talos-s...

POST requests work perfectly fine without cookies.

Edit: I just saw your comment in the sibling thread. Guess I won't be interacting with your sites any time soon.

(brb updating my bots and scrapers to use cookies)

What? I browse without cookies (even first-party), and apart from the WE USE COOKIES banner that ironically can't be acknowledged most sites work just fine.

Obviously shopping sites and similar get whitelisted.
