Re:Ask HN: Best Practices for CSS in a Modern JavaScript App on Wednesday September 21, 2016 @05:18PM (#12552327)
I prefer react-css with react mostly because I can import styles and treat them like regular objects. I also find it much easier to do responsive styling by computing CSS values with js.

Another reason for this approach is that I believe React Native will be the universal framework for mobile and web development and it also uses this method of styling so I'm adapting to it.

Re:Ask HN: What's your programming process? on Thursday July 07, 2016 @10:54AM (#12049674)
My style is continually evolving, especially as I get more familiar with TDD/BDD. The biggest thing though is to do as much planning as possible before even writing a single line of code.

For front end stuff this includes wireframes and mock-ups.

For back end work I try to first model the data structure with as many features as I can think of so that I can picture what a mature version of the app may look like. This helps contextualize things so I can structure them properly. From there I will prune it down to only what is essential for MVP and then start building things out to support that model.

Doesnt the ETF also open the door to institutional funds that are normally restricted to specific assets? Seems to me that is the biggest advantage of a bitcoin ETF as it will open the gates to more capital for bitcoin investments.

Does anyone know who did this or a writeup about how they did it?
Re:Ask HN: When do you risk it all? on Friday October 10, 2014 @11:08PM (#8441099)
Is it possible to deploy an MVP or at least gather signups before going too far?

Ideas are a dime a dozen. Investors dont give a shit about your idea. What they want to see is that other people are willing to buy into your idea OR if you are so amazing that your idea is ahead of its time then at least you are able to execute on it.

Until you can prove either of those, you dont have much so dont bet much.

Re:Ask HN: Who to target Businesses or the General Public on Wednesday August 13, 2014 @04:44PM (#8174925)
I would go B2B because business are more likely to pay for things that save them time and money. Consumers generally dont like to spend money, which is why consumer services are typically free or cheap and usually generate revenue through ads.

Re:9-year-old kid sells his Apple shares to buy Bitcoin on Wednesday November 27, 2013 @07:12PM (#6812213)
Its easy to call it a bubble/scheme because most things usually are. The fundamental difference with bitcoin is that it is unlike anything the world has ever seen. Given the limited quantity and proven utility of it, many people believe it is still undervalued and maintain price targets in the tens of thousands upwards to hundreds of thousands. These targets are derived from simple calculations.

The only question is whether or not bitcoin will maintain its utility going forward. As long as it does then the value will continue to rise.

Do yourself a favor and hedge your one-sided, possibly wrong opinion and own some BTC sooner than later.

Re:Ask HN: Would you buy or sell bitcoin at current rate? Why? on Tuesday November 26, 2013 @11:46PM (#6806462)
It depends on your price target. I personally think BTC is going to the tens of thousands in the next few years so I see no reason to sell now and even buying at $1k is still relatively cheap.
Re:Ask HN: Can you make real money in crypto-currency mining? on Friday November 15, 2013 @03:39PM (#6742010)
I think the days of independent mining are over. Used to be you could mine several hundred BTC/month with a nice multi GPU setup. If you held on to those BTC then it would have been very profitable.

But as difficulty increases it requires more and more specialized hardware for less output. It is to the point now where you cannot expect to make money mining unless you are willing to invest millions in equipment and facilities.

Re:Ask HN: What is the Future of Bitcoin? on Tuesday November 12, 2013 @12:14AM (#6715993)
Its fairly simple to estimate future value of BTC. The supply is fixed - there will never be more than 21,000,000 BTC in circulation so the only other factor is how big you think Bitcoin will become relative to other currencies.

For example, there is about 1.22 Trillion USD in circulation. Right now BTC has a market capitalization of $4B which puts it at about 0.3% of USD. If BTC were to become even 5% of USD that would be a 16x increase over where it is now ($330 x 16 = $5500). So if you believe that BTC could be at least 5% of what USD is then you should expect BTC to be worth about $5500 ea.

I personally think that is a conservative estimate. I expect at least $10k in the next 5 years.

Re:Ask HN: Is a Bitcoin 2 feasible? on Monday November 11, 2013 @04:31PM (#6714195)
There are plenty of copy cat crypto currencies (+4 alliteration) already. But the question is, what value would a new currency provide over BTC? Mining difficulty is a feature of BTC in order to prevent all the coins from being mined before there is sufficient demand. IMO the market only needs one crypto currency and BTC is already the winner.
Re:Bitcoin is an Inflationary Currency on Tuesday October 22, 2013 @07:25PM (#6595700)
Even though mining will continue for the indefinite future, the total amount of BTC that will ever be circulated is capped. And the rate at which new coins are mined will decrease dramatically in the next few years - to the point where they will have little impact on what is already in circulation.
Re:Show HN: interactive digital menu on Friday May 17, 2013 @10:51PM (#5727723)
Yes this is a drawback however:

- There is nothing preventing the restaurant from making printed menus available to waiting guests.

- If the interactive menu can only serve one person at a time and is occupied nearly all of the time then it would prove a success, no?

Re:Show HN: interactive digital menu on Friday May 17, 2013 @10:45PM (#5727709)
Now THIS is good feedback. I totally agree that how I've been selling the product up to this point is weak and (admittedly) I haven't pushed it as hard I should because I feel like I need to develop more of the product before I can show the real features and benefits.

But to address your first point, what you are basically saying is that when a person walks into a restaurant they are ready to buy - its just a matter of what to buy. That may be true for some (or most) cases. But suppose someone walks into a restaurant on a busy strip for the first time, looks at the menu, reads only descriptions (because that is the only information available) and they do not like what they see so they move on. Who has not had that experience at least once? Or what if the dish they ordered looked worse than what they had in mind and made them regret their order and that bad experience causes them never to return to that restaurant?

I guess the value proposition I am making is that with more information, consumers are able to make better informed decisions and that results in lower uncertainty and remorse of the decision. How that affects the restaurants bottom line would be very difficult to measure. But if any business thinks that depriving their customers of information is more beneficial then there is a fundamental problem. I hope that is not the case.

Re:Show HN: interactive digital menu on Friday May 17, 2013 @09:33PM (#5727554)
The holy grail of this kind of technology is the ability to interact and order directly from every table. That seems to be the approach T1Vision is taking. The problem with that (at this stage) is the huge initial investment required to make that happen. Not only is the hardware cost high but it is also very challenging to integrate with existing POS systems. Not to mention changing the workflow of taking orders and getting food to tables.

Where my approach differs is that it is one screen in the front lobby. It would be used to draw people's attention and provide an informative experience and bypasses the challenge of actual order taking (for now) which makes the software simpler to develop and the hardware requirement much less so the total cost is actually reasonable for smaller/independent restaurants.

Show HN: interactive digital menu

I've been developing a brand new concept for an interactive digital menu. I have never actually seen one of these anywhere but it seems to me like a no-brainer. The idea is that you would replace the printed menu at the front of the house with an interactive touch screen application. People could browse the menu and learn more about the establishment while they wait to be seated. You can see it...

I've been sitting on this theory for a couple of years but finally got around to writing about it. The Instagram purchase makes sense from this perspective. I believe this is the ultimate goal for Facebook and I see no reason why they cannot achieve it.

My co-founders and I are interested in applying to YC. However, one of them is unsure of his ability to be in the Bay Area during the semester. Show HN: Interactive device control from a browser

I just launched a landing page for my startup CNTRLLR.http://cntrllr.comIn a few words, CNTRLLR is a new open platform for device control. Its similar to what you can do with AMX and Crestron except that our platform is built using web standards so apps run directly in the browser. We are working on a low cost hardware controller along with the system software. We are still working on the...
