Has Hacker New Become Programmer News?

Does anybody else have the feeling HN somehow became "programmer news" along the way?I remember when it was "startup news" and mostly for startup founders. Then it became "Hacker News" and about "Anything that good hackers would find interesting".Not sure what everyones definition of a "good hacker" is. But somehow I would expect more outlandish topics then all the discussions about corporate...

Browsing Fiverr I see all these social media manager gigs.

Can these people really do something useful for a startup?

I'm always curious to broaden my musical taste.

But I would not want to let that site log into my Slotify account.

Gnoosic is a site I love. It creates AI based recommendations without any login:

Is the USLC always updated with the latest books?

What would be the legal background of using their index?

What is the main feature of Goodreads?

Is it discussing new books?

If so, what is the reason people want to discuss new books? Anybody here who does it?

If so: Why do you do it? And do you do it before or after you read it?

You won't have to use hot air if you go with a phone with replaceable battery.

They are fewer these days, but they still exist:

I know about them. But I would have to root my phone to install them. And that means trusting some binary blob from someone on the internet. So I would not do it.

some of the function names make
    me want to stab people
What would be an example?

My only real gripe with PHP is
    the annotation syntax
What do you mean? Afaik there is no "annotation syntax" in PHP. Could it be that you confuse what certain frameworks and IDEs do with PHP, the language?
Re:Knoppix 8.6 abandons systemd on Sunday September 01, 2019 @10:17AM (#20852397)
No, I can not remember having a race condition regarding startup scripts.
Re:Knoppix 8.6 abandons systemd on Sunday September 01, 2019 @10:14AM (#20852380)
By that logic, no mistakes can ever be criticized.

I explained, why systemd is a step in the wrong direction in mutiple ways. That has nothing to do with habbits.

Re:Knoppix 8.6 abandons systemd on Sunday September 01, 2019 @10:08AM (#20852345)
Everything I know about systemd is bad.

When I want to write a script that runs on startup, I expect that I can just put (or link) it in some directory where the scripts are that get started on startup. Or that there is one main script that calls all scripts that are intended to be startet on startup.

I do not want to write a "service" that has some "only run once and then discard" flag or whatever.

When I want to look at logs, I want to use the tools I like. less, grep, tail etc. I do not want to dabble with some binary format and its tooling.

When I want to start or stop a service, I want to call a script that does that. A script which I can look at and see what it does. Like /etc/init.d/apache2. I do not want to execute some magic command like "service apache start" which I have to guess or look up and which gives me no clue about what it does.

Re:AWS EC2/RDS Outage in us-east-1 on Saturday August 31, 2019 @11:33AM (#20846876)
Easier said then done if that would mean synchronizing database and filesystem that is heavily written to.
Re:AWS EC2/RDS Outage in us-east-1 on Saturday August 31, 2019 @11:32AM (#20846866)
Is there no way at all to reach Amazon EC2 instances in us-east-1 or is just the default route to the internet broken?

Is there any way for the owners of the instances to reach them?

For personalized movie recommendations http://www.gnovies.com is a nice alternative.

I wonder if movie reviews could be done via ActivityPub somehow.

Re:Rust: Enable WebAssembly backend by default on Sunday November 26, 2017 @11:06AM (#15781473)
I would like to code WebAssembly by hand. Are there any good tools / tutorials on this?
Re:Inside the Revolution at Etsy on Saturday November 25, 2017 @04:31PM (#15778107)
I didn't even know Etsy is a public traded company. What are some other companies that are basically 'a website' that are publically traded?

I have been coding for decades now and never had a use case for a linked list.

So how do we decide if qwerty or dvorak is fitter?
Re:Code Sponsor is shutting down on December 8 on Saturday November 25, 2017 @04:16AM (#15775166)
Eric, how is your service tied to GitHub? As far as I understand it, you simply are a matchmaker for developers and advertisers. And you track clicks to the advertisers urls. Where the developers put the links to those urls is not your decision, right?

If so, I don't think GitHub has an angle to attack you.

A developer with a Commission Junction account could very well put CJ links in their README. That would not give GitHub a vector to attack CJ.

Re:Gimp 2.9.4 Released on Thursday July 14, 2016 @04:11AM (#12092322)
Ever since I switched from Photoshop to Gimp, I have desperately waiting for non-destrutive editing aka adjustment-layers / filter-layers. It has been years now...

So I was excited to see a new version. Checked the features and ... nope.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Yes, that is part of it. I pretty much abandoned the thought of someone being wrong and someone being right. We all have this bias, that we are more intelligent then others. While on average, we are just average.
