Show HN: Uclusion – We spent 7 years building an opinionated planning tool

https://www.uclusion.com

Hi HN,Uclusion has unique collaboration features for teams and customers, but we want to highlight that it also solves three solo dev planning pain points:1. Data Structure: Almost all project management tools mess up the data structure. They either do Task > Subtasks (hiding the actual work deep inside child tasks) or Job > One-line tasks (forcing you to describe complex work without...

I like what you've done but doesn't

Our highest priority is to satisfy the customer through early and continuous delivery of valuable software.

need changing also? I think the software needs to be delivered early and continuously, but not necessarily to the customer in production.

Delivering directly to the customer made sense when there was much less software in the world and nearly anything you made was useful. These days the last thing customers need is more half baked software to have to evaluate.

"LinkedIn employees who move locations could see their pay adjusted based on the local market where they're based, said Greg Snapper, director of corporate communications."

That's subsidizing coming to the office. Better than mandating but still a little messed up.

Ask HN: How are your developer team meetings going?

For marketing reasons, we want to know if we should spend a lot of time explaining the problem of developer team meetings.I've always been aware that these meetings are time wasters but until recently I did not understand how ineffective they are for making plans or giving status. What is everyone's experience with meeting driven process?

Re:Why “validate your idea” is bad advice on Monday June 21, 2021 @02:11PM (#27581906)
It's a good article but mostly because there is so much misinformation out there.
This article is nonsensical - yes outdated VPNs are bad but 1. Don't have an outdated VPN 2. An outdated VPN will get you remote or not - it's just a matter of time
What if you had a system where people approve your stories with a certainty score and reason?

I mean maybe those tests you are writing really aren't useful - not all testing is - why not get some opinions on it immediately before you start?

Re:Ask HN: How do you find a co-founder you trust? on Thursday June 17, 2021 @01:14PM (#27541972)
I think you should relax the business oriented requirement for your co-founder and just focus on finding another person, with any skill set, that you trust.

It's not that you are risk averse it's that you are learning other areas averse. You need that co-founder because its a big idea but you may also need to get out of your personal comfort zone.

Re:Software Dark Ages on Thursday June 17, 2021 @01:05PM (#27541866)
I've really only ever seen people just waiting to retire able to operate that way. The latest brain studies show that it is use it or lose it and losing it can literally kill you. So unless some deep thought goes into it most of what you describe will not be maintainable for long.
People frequently have this misconception that they are competing with their peers. You are competing with people that could have been hired instead of you - not your peers.

And on that front you are diligent and will eventually reach performance, so everyone should be happy with you.

I am a little concerned that you have three different tickets assigned to you. Are you held up on the first two tickets and so need a third one assigned? If you are just working on all three at once then the context switching is bad for you.

If you are held up on the first two tickets does anyone know that? Do you have a way of communicating that you are held up on those tickets and what you need answered?

Re:Work 2021: Say goodbye to yesterday's work habits on Wednesday June 16, 2021 @02:35PM (#27531889)
I work for https://www.uclusion.com where of course we agree with the idea of saying goodbye to yesterday's work habits. But the author of that article is not fully grasping the situation.

If you just WFH as normal and Zoom for every meeting instead of reducing meetings, then work 2021 is not going to scale. The best you can hope for out of that scenario is maybe 3 days in office and 2 days remote.

"Steps that employers can take, the experts said, include allowing staff to set their own schedules, checking in with them to monitor well-being, designating meeting-free days and proactively addressing microaggressions or rude workplace behavior"

You're not going to stop burnout with "meeting-free days". You have to stop doing meeting driven process altogether. And most of the microagressions and rude behaviors are coming out of too many meetings as well. And for god's sake don't schedule 1-1 meetings to monitor for well being - that just adds another meeting onto the pile!

Re:Winners and losers of the work-from-home revolution on Monday June 14, 2021 @01:09PM (#27505164)
Your experience with remote work is not at all unique. And if your team would like to move onto something a bit more accommodating of higher productivity and remote work than their are new tools available also.
Re:Winners and losers of the work-from-home revolution on Monday June 14, 2021 @01:06PM (#27505121)
"For extroverts, the office can be an ideal place for getting things done with just the right amount of spontaneous interruption."

Yeah and abacus is better than calculators. The media pushing this daft narrative over and over won't make anyone believe this nonsense.

Re:Ask HN: Can you think deeply in real time? on Monday June 14, 2021 @12:59PM (#27505030)
No one is capable of formulating intelligent responses in real time on any kind of absolute scale. Yes relative to you they might be doing better but they are still likely spouting nonsense compared to less time constrained thought.

If this problem is coming up in real time meetings it's because the meetings are the wrong way to do things; not that you need to think faster to support an archaic way of making decisions.

It's difficult to read this article as anything other than another threat made by managers who want office work to stay the same. I mean where did the younger employees get the idea that their career won't be treated well if they WFH? From their managers of course.
This kind of reminds me of the saying in the military that "We are now fully prepared to fight WWII".

Perfecting meetings technology is tone deaf to what workers actually need.

We agree with those points and sell a tool https://www.uclusion.com that replaces traditional meetings.

Many of your real time meetings and discussions were not the best use of time even in the office but now remote is highlighting the problem as you explain.

Just how close are you trying to be with your co-workers? My parents don't live in the same state with me but we talk weekly on the phone and meet once in a while in person.

If you need hourly contact with your co-workers I hope it's more about doing the job then socializing. If it is about doing the job and your job is software development then are alternatives to endless meetings.

Re:Ask HN: Number of Meetings per Week? on Wednesday March 24, 2021 @02:44PM (#26571355)
Our experience was similar and one of the goals we started https://www.uclusion.com for was to help fix that.

http://www.paulgraham.com/makersschedule.html - Here's an article even more critical of meeting driven development from the founder of YC (and this site).

Re:Ask HN: How to focus so you work on you most important goals? on Tuesday September 22, 2020 @04:48PM (#24559708)
At work I use https://www.uclusion.com since I am a co-founder.
Re:Ask HN: Is it me or PWAs are pretty much dead? on Tuesday September 22, 2020 @04:31PM (#24559534)
https://www.uclusion.com uses PWA to be on mobile. Its true that means we don't have push notification support on Apple phones but since we have email and Slack integration having our own push notification is much less of a priority.
Re:Show HN: We're building a virtual meetup platform on Wednesday August 05, 2020 @09:10PM (#24067281)
Its definitely not solely a marketing speak problem. There are only two of us at my startup and we've had at least 10 revisions just to get the above the fold text in place. The below the fold we are still working on and will have a new revision soon.

Yet even now if you told me what we do is not clear I would not be very surprised. I mean sure it seems clear to me but how could it not since I already use the product myself?
