This. Especially in a field where, if the questions are to be taken at face value then the results can be incredibly socially important.

I read this and went to craigslist just to see if it was as cheap as they said. in chicago, there dozens of treadmills posted in the last 3 days and easily ten or so at or less than $100.

The last line here is not hyperbole. It changes you, plain and simple, to read this mans experiences and their translation into a form of therapy.

Who is this "average computer user"? Anybody that makes the jump to Linux has a reason to(and there many, not just tinkerers), otherwise they stick with a windows machine or pony up for a mac.

I can't believe this getting upvoted. I wonder how much software you use every single day thats created and maintained by "self-important teenagers and manchildren".

I actually played Hunt the Wumpus on my dads Kaypro2 when I was a kid. Grand Theft Wumpus might be the funniest thing I read this week. With Lisp + Graphs? Solid. I wonder if more of No Starch's offerings are this cool.

I'm worried that this is going to be one of those group think exercises where people are simply going to key off of their opinions without even looking at the code. Or, worse, reiterate their claims on other forums. I don't think, at least in Patio11's case, that this is gross self-promotion, I think its simply arrogance.

Most of what you have to say here I find myself agreeing with with a smile and nod. But I wish you would just let this one go. He may not be the easiest person in the world to argue with, but his work and that book specifically are excellent. I also emailed him thanking him for sharing his work and got a prompt, sincere reply. I've been to your site and seen your thorough and organized postings on freelancing and I've read each one. And not having sent a thank you via email( my apologies), here's an honest one now;
Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge in an articulate and interesting way. It helps the late bloomers among us find our path.
That being said I just want to scream when I log on and the first comment on this post is pure snark from someone who should seemingly be above that. C'mon man, for some who is so clearly motivated by empathy and understanding in the comments they leave here I would hope you could just let. shit. go.

troll much? Nothing, in any of his writing, and certainly not that quote, give any indication of a desire to "impose a marxist system". Sounds kind of like your the ideologue here. I fail to understand how relating the experiences of those who built the country you probably think you value would be such a threat to its survival.

Really? A link to an article that opens with a quote from Kevin Macdonald? I knew that the comments for this one would probably be a minefield but this is absurd. Take the antisemitism elsewhere.

I wish I were kidding when I say that I had sworn off HN for a few weeks to make sure i sufficiently devoted myself to a project. I lasted 2 days and the first thing I see back is this essay at the top of the front page.
