Re:Ask HN: What are some good technology blogs to follow? on Sunday March 12, 2017 @10:39AM (#13850844)
I put together a votable list of most of the sites recommended by HN users so its easier to see which blogs are the most popular/recommended (anyone can vote).

https://www.diffur.com/which-programming-blogs-do-you-follow

This is one of my first side projects, and I created it because I’ve always been interested in opinion-based questions on HN (i.e. Ask HN: What is your favorite internet rabbit hole?). I know there are already several sites where you can ask opinionated questions (quota, slant, hn), but I was looking for something that’s uncluttered and straightforward. That’s why Diffur questions are simple lists. Anyone can vote and rankings are based on vote count.

Here are some topics I’ve added:

https://www.diffur.com/what-are-the-best-sites-to-learn-algo...

https://www.diffur.com/which-companies-have-beautiful-websit...

https://www.diffur.com/what-are-the-best-machine-learning-pr...

https://www.diffur.com/which-programming-blogs-do-you-follow

Would love to hear what you think. Also feel free to email me at [email protected].

haven't looked through the code yet, but does this port to chrome?

much more impressive drawings have been created than this.
The added animation doesn't add much.
You say it's subjective, but when you start posting things like the above, you're deeming this project as unworthy of being on HN just because you feel it's "novel". The OP never claims the technology is new or cutting-edge, so why even bring that up? And there's really no need to link other css artworks in an attempt to undermine the work at hand.

Why is this currently #6 on the HN front page?
Because someone took time to make this, and we tend to approach Show HN projects with an open mind.

If it doesn't work on your browser, then try another one. The OP isn't asking you to buy anything or force anything down your throat.

Ask HN: How do recruiting firms make sure they get paid?

I understand many recruiting firms (tech) take 20-30% from a successful candidate's starting salary. How do they make sure the employer discloses that the candidate was hired and their salary? What if multiple firms are reaching out to the same candidate for the same employer? I know I've received duplicate job offers from different sourcers on linkedin.

I think you're underestimating the level of traffic this "glorified phpBB theme with a relatively small community of fans" receives. Their Alexa rank sits at 3327 which alone means they're receiving tremendous traffic. Not to mention the whole concept of the site is to connect product enthusiasts with products they might end up purchasing. There's actually a fairly significant amount of upside if they can turn PH into a sales platform and take a commission.
Looks like the HN title was edited. The original HN title was: "Is There Anything Good About Men?"
Both. It feels as though both could offer interesting perspectives on alien intelligence. Since there's so much we don't know, I assume many theories would be labeled as fiction to be proven otherwise.
Although some have pointed out that the article is pure speculation, this is a topic that interests me. Are there any recommendable books that explore similar topics?

I've tried googling, but there's just too many "Alien" theory books out there. Hoping for some solid recommendations.

Clickbait to the max. Here's the summary at the end:

To summarize my main points: A few lucky men are at the top of society and enjoy the culture’s best rewards. Others, less fortunate, have their lives chewed up by it. Culture uses both men and women, but most cultures use them in somewhat different ways. Most cultures see individual men as more expendable than individual women, and this difference is probably based on nature, in whose reproductive competition some men are the big losers and other men are the biggest winners. Hence it uses men for the many risky jobs it has.

This is obnoxious towards a Show HN. One day I'll have down voting privileges.

Fiverr is way cheaper at similar quality.
Looks like a great resource with a number of collaborators. What was the process of getting all the collaborators to agree to advertise the book?

Have you ever been approached to sponsor another product/company? Under what terms would you accept?

What if Google wanted to support an Open Source project. Would it still be appropriate if the project mentioned Google as a sponsor, then showed a banner ad promoting the new Google Phone (no tracking/banner does not change)?

Have you ever heard of Quora?
Short story: I gave this a try not expecting much. I got matched with a person named "Lenny". The conversation started off fairly straight forward:

>Lenny: hello there

>hnperson: whats up

>Lenny: How are you doing today?

>hnperson: Not bad, yourself?

>Lenny: I'm doing beautifully

Having tried all the features I wanted to try, I was ready to end the conversation and get on with my work when Lenny asked:

>Lenny: I'm a recruiter for Facebook.

>Lenny: Are you happy with your current work?

This was a bit of a pleasant surprise, as I just entered the interview process with a few companies including Google and was planning to reach out to FB sometime today.

Unfortunately, before we were able to exchange contact info, Lenny left the chat in the middle of typing (presumably an accident?). I just wanted to share my Tuesday morning experience, and if Lenny is out there, I'd love to continue the conversation! If not, thanks for sharing this Show HN :)

We've been working on a project with a small community of developers that helps rank various tools and recommendations:

Would love to hear if this is helpful to you.
