News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Let's say you're charged.

They seize your phone and pull photographs, text messages, messenger logs, maps data, etc. The messages are inculpatory.

What do you want to say? That the extraction method is unreliable, that the Police have incorrect logs? Imply that the text messages have been extracted with errors, somehow?

That simply isn't the case. The data extracted is both reliable and probative. This is a copy and paste.

The absence of real applications incorporating this stuff is damning.

Where are the killer apps?

Re:Venetians are pondering raising their entire city on Sunday May 28, 2023 @06:07AM (#36102691)
After visiting Venice a week ago I say do whatever it takes! Save the city! It's a floating wonderland, even though its a bit stinky.

People already have unhealthy parasocial relationships with influencers.

It seems clear that people (lonely/depressed people especially) will overdose on this sort of thing once it is developed, commercialised, and less bleeding edge.

It's vapour filling the place of human connection. It's stevia. It's not going to give you cancer, but it's still unhealthy and will certainly exceed the parameters of entertainment.

Had HN been around when personal computing dropped, I imagine that we could have made some attempt at a steel man argument justifying such a purpose. Even if that argument was 'hobbyists', there was something to be said.

With Quantum computing, what would that be?

Well done.

There is something like this in 'A Fire Upon the Deep' by Vernor Vinge; his intergalactic societies translate their alien languages - and incompatible methods of expression - using an application similar to this one.

Very cool whenever sci-fi becomes reality!

What a great idea! Are you inclined to make a guide? If so, my old-school wife and myself would be grateful.

Otherwise, I will enjoy the fun of figuring it out for myself some day.

Is anyone working on an RPG in light of this? Please?
Sorry but I am not going to pay for this before trying it out on my content.

Surely there can be a test function within the website which allows me to see what a user would experience?

Where can I buy one?
Re:Startups are betting on a psychedelic gold rush on Sunday October 17, 2021 @06:05PM (#28900231)
The sale of drugs to non-addicts just doesn't scale.

Startups selling psychedelics want repeat customers.

Terence McKenna said he would take magic mushrooms less than once per year.

I don't know what John Hopkins advises, but I would be surprised if they advocated even greater than annual dosing after initial treatment.

Re:A different kind of keyboard on Thursday September 23, 2021 @02:18AM (#28625709)
Cool article!

If you haven't come across Doug Engelbart yet, I highly recommend it. He invented the mouse (yes, that mouse), and was a staunch believer in chorded keyboards.

I'll admit, though, I don't really get it.

Hi, could you please recommend a product you have found worked well?
If you have an Audible subscription, you may have noticed the same behaviour there.

Large numbers of books labelled as 'free with your membership', which likely only cost Amazon the price of delivering the files. Which makes sense, because once I have paid for my credit the worst outcome financially is that I use it.

Re:The brain isn’t supposed to change this much on Thursday June 10, 2021 @02:32AM (#27457534)
Maybe it's like SHA256.

You change a single pixel in an image, for example, and you get a completely different result.

Amazon's support likely comes because they've identified an opportunity to profit from distribution.

Just another chapter of hypocrisy in the history of drug dealing.

Great news though.

Can I build apps for this?
Re:Show HN: StowShare – The Airbnb of Storage on Wednesday September 09, 2020 @03:37AM (#24418353)
I would use this, today, if it were in Auckland.

Chicken and egg problem - what I'm saying is hold on :)
