Not an option with uverse unfortunately. The router and modem are combined into a single box.

Admittedly it's been a while since I have had U-Verse, but I was able to disable wifi on the modem, put the modem in "DMZ mode," and make an Apple Airport Extreme work well with it. Still not real bridged mode, although the router behind the U-Verse modem in DMZ mode would get the real external IP address handed to it so it doesn't act like a double-NAT situation.

You still had to have your TVs run through to the actual U-Verse modem, though, and can't plug them into a router sitting behind it.

Yeah you can. I have

Uverse Router ==> PFSense Box ==> GigE switch ==> Uverse TV box.

The trick is enabling IGMP proxy. The first 10 seconds of a Uverse TV stream is transmitted over UDP. After 10 seconds, it switches to multicast. You need IGMP proxy on the PFSense box (or IGMP proxy capable switch) to relay that multicast traffic to the ports on the other interface.

After that, DMZ your PFSense box, add just a few firewall allow rules, and you're done!

Ah, that's right, now you're jogging my memory as to why it didn't work for me.

My consumer level router I had at the time wasn't capable of doing the IGMP proxy.

Out of curiosity I looked and my Asus RT-N66U does in fact offer it, so more consumer routers may be directly compatible now too.

What the heck? Do you have any clue what the motivation is behind this?

It's how they deliver instant channel change. The unicast udp burst is about 30% higher than the nominal bitrate of the multicast. The STB stitches the unicast and multicast together seamlessly.

That is an impressively smart solution really. I don't have instant channel change :(

Yeah like tacoman said, it's for channel changing.

Multicast saves on bandwidth.

What's wrong with double NAT?

Nothing really, but you should generally avoid it if possible. It just creates the possibility of having unexpected problems later on.

Double port forwarding, for one.

My UVerse Router is the "entry" point into my system. but, everything else is behind a Cisco RV042, which routes around static IP Addresses.

More info on my setup here:

I also have a Wifi Router plugged into the RV042, so Wifi is completely turned off at the UVerse router.

My U-Verse provided box has my Airport Time Capsule connected via Ethernet and it's MAC put in the DMZ. From there, the Airport is my network gateway. It was a little bit of a challenge to setup, but is possible.

I have Time Warner (but probably a very similar device) and the wireless setup GUI lets you put the router into bridged mode. Good enough.
