What do you think about cybercab & the incoming ability for private owners to participate?

We already have uber and Lyft and taxis and our own cars and some other self driving things and bikes… and isn’t Apple supposedly coming out with a car sometime? This isn’t special and a lot of city dwellers aren’t interested in supporting musk anymore.
Re:Tesla and SpaceX lose over $420B in combined market cap i... by Dig1t on Thursday November 05, 2026 @11:47PM (#50388345)
If you book a cybercab the price is significantly cheaper than an Uber or Lyft. You can book one to get across Austin for literally half the price of the competition.

I took screenshots of the prices I have paid because I was so happy with only having to pay $7 to get across my city.

Apple killed their car program years ago. I know because I work there.

>aren’t interested in supporting musk anymore.

That may be your personal political take, but there is no evidence that politics are slowing their growth in a meaningful way. There is still strong interest in Tesla products, products like Starlink are growing at an incredible rate, Starship launches command huge livestream viewership.

Starlink is a Tesla product? Both SpaceX and Tesla are counting it as their sale, wow!

He's responding to a claim that people "aren’t interested in supporting musk anymore"

Starlink is a Musk product.

There you go, now you understand.

I thought Apple canceled their car project - see https://carcody.com/apple-car-what-happened-to-project-titan...

It is almost as exciting as the transmutation of base metals into gold, the panacea, and the elixir of longevity — all of which I’m told are just around the corner at Musk’s companies

Have you heard of starship or the model y?

Those are at Musk's companies already.

no

I have ridden in a cybercab several times and they are omnipresent in my city. They work extremely well and are scaling quickly. "No prospects for growth" is a pretty wild take given the obvious new things they are building.
Re:Tesla and SpaceX lose over $420B in combined market cap i... by UltraSane on Thursday November 05, 2026 @11:38PM (#50388279)
Just hype and lies from Musk. He has been lying about self-driving cars for 10 years now.
Re:Tesla and SpaceX lose over $420B in combined market cap i... by Dig1t on Thursday November 05, 2026 @11:48PM (#50388359)
How is it a lie? You can literally book a self driving Tesla anywhere in the Bay Area or Austin. I see them driving around Austin every day.
Re:Tesla and SpaceX lose over $420B in combined market cap i... by UltraSane on Friday November 06, 2026 @12:11AM (#50388470)
The hype and lies are about how profitable robotaxis will be and the claim that private people will be able to participate.
Re:Tesla and SpaceX lose over $420B in combined market cap i... by Dig1t on Friday November 06, 2026 @12:24AM (#50388546)
Regardless of whether private people participate, the actual robotaxi network they are running is real and growing quickly. Are you saying that self driving taxis are not going to be popular? Or is it just that the private citizen program will not materialize?

Regardless of whether private Tesla owners end up participating in the robotaxi market it does seem obvious that self driving taxis are going to be huge. Waymo and Cybercabs are growing quickly and will almost certainly completely dominate the market. Why would you ride in a Uber with a stinky driver (and pay more) when you could ride in a self driving taxi without a driver for cheaper?

Re:Tesla and SpaceX lose over $420B in combined market cap i... by archagon on Friday November 06, 2026 @03:19AM (#50389579)
Why would I ride in a Musk Nazimobile when I can just take a Waymo?
Re:Tesla and SpaceX lose over $420B in combined market cap i... by UltraSane on Friday November 06, 2026 @09:17AM (#50392542)
Self-driving cars should be required to use sensors that directly and accurately measure distances to objects. Just guessing the distance using parallax is stupid.
Re:Tesla and SpaceX lose over $420B in combined market cap i... by sejje on Saturday November 07, 2026 @06:32PM (#50409055)
Self-driving cars should be required to be good at driving.

We should set a safety bar, and any method of achieving that bar should be fine. I'm fine with "N miles driven per injury."

It's not stupid if it works.

Re:Tesla and SpaceX lose over $420B in combined market cap i... by Dig1t on Friday November 06, 2026 @04:18PM (#50398670)
I and many millions of other Americans will happily ride in them. Your particular political view does not even represent 50% of the country. Even if you say 50% of Americans will boycott the company purely for political reasons, that's still a market of 150M people.
Re:Tesla and SpaceX lose over $420B in combined market cap i... by UltraSane on Friday November 06, 2026 @04:32PM (#50398813)
I do not trust any self driving car that can't directly measure distances to objects and instead just guesses it from video cameras.
Re:Tesla and SpaceX lose over $420B in combined market cap i... by Dig1t on Friday November 06, 2026 @05:39PM (#50399455)
Do you not trust any human drivers? They only have 2 eyeballs and cannot precisely measure the distance to any objects.

My guess is that you have ridden in an Uber or Lyft before and were comfortable enough to rely on their eyeball based system even though they weren't able to measure the distance to objects.

Regardless of whether you personally trust a camera-based system, the data do seem to show that it is possible to build a camera-based self driving system and have it be safer than human drivers.

Re:Tesla and SpaceX lose over $420B in combined market cap i... by UltraSane on Friday November 06, 2026 @06:12PM (#50399791)
Current computer binocular vision are not at all comparable to human vision and humans really aren't that great of drivers anyway.

What data? I don't really trust Tesla to release accurate data.

Re:Tesla and SpaceX lose over $420B in combined market cap i... by archagon on Friday November 06, 2026 @07:01PM (#50400212)
The CEO of a company saying and doing batshit crazy things for no reason, leading to a 50% (or 25%, or even 10%) global boycott, does not instill confidence in the company as an investment opportunity.
Re:Tesla and SpaceX lose over $420B in combined market cap i... by UltraSane on Friday November 06, 2026 @10:54PM (#50401475)
And if Musk were to suddenly die the value of his companies would instantly crater.

Not sure if this is an indictment of the company, or an endorsement of Musk.
Re:Tesla and SpaceX lose over $420B in combined market cap i... by UltraSane on Saturday November 07, 2026 @07:21PM (#50409367)
It is an acknowledgement that gullible people fall for Musk's hype over and over.

I think Elon Musk says a lot of things.
