And an identity verification platform: https://www.kairos.com/

And an AI safety organization: https://kairos-project.org/

And a DARPA program: https://www.darpa.mil/research/programs/knowledge-directed-a...

Pick any ancient greek word and you'll probably find at least a handful of collisions.

and...?

In general, the community tries to avoid/mitigate project naming confusion. It is usually a gentleman's agreement, but sometimes may get nasty with trademarks/copyrights (example: Arduino.)

If you are not associated with a core decision team, it is considered nice to avoid confusing the public. In my opinion, gleaning donations is just theft. =3

"The community" of every single person that works on software and names things? For which you can speak?

Oh that community! Yeah we banned Joel_Mckay for speaking for us

"we"?
Re:Show HN: Kairos – Open-source risk and fraud decisioning ... by Joel_Mckay on Wednesday November 04, 2026 @03:16AM (#50362696)
Are you asking a bad comedian to explain their joke?

My only active FOSS project right now is a unpublished 3D volumetric slicer for a home metal printer that won't be public for another 2 to 3 years for various trade reasons. I code mostly for fun these days, and the dude doesn't sound like fun to work around. =3

Re:Show HN: Kairos – Open-source risk and fraud decisioning ... by marcus_holmes on Thursday November 05, 2026 @12:20AM (#50375511)
I was trying, but obviously failing, to extend the joke by asking who "we" was, as per the old Lone Ranger joke (https://huntthedevil.wordpress.com/2015/05/08/what-do-you-me...)

I have no FOSS projects, I'm not sure I entirely agree with it all, there's an element of "getting developers to create free stuff for corporations". I notice there are no "FOSS" architecture plans, or any other professional output. But I digress. Good for you :)

It is a personal choice to share commercially non-viable works under Apache 2.0, but I agree FOSS won't normally pay the bills.

One can't do a OSS project expecting other people to give a toss, but rather it solves a niche issue you and 5 other hobbyists encountered. =3

I wish I had time to participate in FOSS projects these days, as there is a backlog of projects I'd like to get done.

Mostly focused on rather boring small stuff these days... like sub-micron boring... Have a wonderful day =3

In general, traditionally there are underappreciated curators that take on the role of keeping a named package or program consistent, and may go though a personal validation process with a OS build organization to provide a chain of accountability for the user-base.

The amount of abuse these people endure from general users is a classic rerun. =3

There will always be projects that share the same name. You can do quick search on Github: https://github.com/search?q=kairos&type=repositories. However it does not change the significance of what each project is building and the problem they sought to solve.
