Re:Iterating Backwards in C on Friday October 30, 2026 @04:38AM (#50301234)
Conventionally, loops with <= is very much a Pascal thing, not C.
Re:Iterating Backwards in C on Friday October 30, 2026 @04:33AM (#50301205)
There is nothing clearer about your way unless someone is just starting with C.

'while (i--)k is a shortcut, which might seem terse when one first encounters it, it is a well-established and trivial to understand construct. On the other hand, your embellishment only adds pointless friction when reading the code.

Re:Eunice is almost here (William Gibson, Agency) on Monday October 26, 2026 @11:27AM (#50245402)
YMMV, but I found Daemon rather unreadable. Both in writing and the content.

Definitely not even in the same ballpark as Gibson, or even Stephenson.

Any rule is as good as its enforcement.

The plank rule just exists, not enforced, so nobody observes it.

Same will happen with the high-tech regulation. In fact, it is already happening left and right where it does exist.

Amen. Very well put.
How do you propose people pay for a roller coaster ride?

Please add spaces after periods. The presentation is terrible.

Different target audience.

I'd rather have an aluminum key.

> Heated steering wheel on the other hand; that's heavenly

Twice I tried it on rental cars it freaked the hell out of me. This is what I'd imagine people experiencing some exotic neurological collapse feel like - part of hands feeling warm, while surrounding bits feeling frozen. Mixed signaling, really bizarre dissonance. So now when I get a new car, I get pretty much every option except for the heated steering wheel.

> I've yet to encounter a program where a single flipped JE/JNE or NOP couldn't unlock most or all capabilities

There are some, with code consistency cross-checks and such. Cracking them with static code patching can get very time-consuming. Patching them dynamically works, but some have checks for that too. It's not common though for sure.

Bah... how pedestrian. Wago or bust!

Excellent collection, compliments to the chef!

One of my recent favourites - Le Soleil by Foscarini - https://www.foscarini.com/en/product/le-soleil-std-s-en/

It's wonderfully asymmetrical without overdoing it, with every layer suspended and swaying independently when prodded. Exceptional light distribution.

Re:Ballmer Peak on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @05:48PM (#49914918)
You have a point. It's possible that Munroe being a physist might've known about Balmer Jump... though that's still quite a stretch to assume it was the source of the comic.
Re:Ballmer Peak on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @03:35AM (#49905660)
It's a different Balmer.

Same in French.

It's just that professions are properties.

First country to admit putting weapons in space.
This still can be gamed.

Works fine here.

That's pretty damn obvious to everyone with a half of brain, yet here we are being pulled apart.

What an odd question to ask.
Re:Terrance Tao explains 6 essential mathematical concepts on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @05:01AM (#49519652)
The expression is "To know is to be able to explain".

It holds up very well in a lot of situations.

But w/h does.

have/want if old/new is already taken.
The difficult part, which is glanced over, is calculating the number of leap years for the year "slide" in Part 5.

A bit more guidance there would go a long way.

There are only two dates that aren't symmetrical - 3/14 and 2/28 - and they are easier to remember in the mm/yy format.
Re:Bedtime Procrastination on Saturday August 15, 2026 @06:35PM (#49314931)
Never heard of this book, so I looked it up.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Why_We_Sleep

From the "Crticial reception" section:

Criticism surrounding the book involved concern about statistical errors in the book and the alarmism it generated in some readers.[27] A review from Alexey Guzey, an independent researcher, criticized the book in an essay entitled Matthew Walker's "Why We Sleep" Is Riddled with Scientific and Factual Errors.[28] The criticism was discussed on the BBC series More or Less.[29] Guzey's criticism was also discussed by Andrew Gelman, a statistician at Columbia University.[30] In a later post on Columbia's statistics blog, Gelman indicated that Walker's purported removal of a bar from a graph could be a "smoking gun," commenting that it entered "research misconduct" territory.[31] Walker posted his responses to these and other criticisms in 2019 on his own blog.

---

Additional critiques are listed in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Walker_(scientist)#Why...

Not being a domain expert, I'd certainly want to see a handful of peer reviews for a book of this sort before subscribing to its conclusions. The fact that it's a best-seller and well-received by the mainstream press is largely irrelevant.

Re:Dropbox is an obvious PE Target? on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @03:10AM (#49268819)
It would've helped to clarify that "PE" stands for "private equity".

Here's an example - https://remute.bandcamp.com/merch/limited-expansion-pack-35-...

I'd guess they use .mod files - instruments and tracks, rather than digitized audio.
