It's unbelievable to me that this is legal. You put your trust into a corporate entity with your data. The entity goes away, so does the guarantee? Oh, OK.

I learned that the hard way with 23&Me.

> I learned that the hard way with 23&Me.

That's why I've never done a DNA test, it's not worth your literal biological data being sold off to god knows where to discriminate against you. I thought everyone realized this but didn't realize it was a niche opinion.

Re:Character.ai Files for Bankruptcy by c-linkage on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @09:25AM (#50071356)
It would have been nice if my siblings had the same opinion.
Re:Character.ai Files for Bankruptcy by satvikpendem on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @05:36AM (#50084831)
Tragedy of the commons, sadly. At least none of my family members have done it, as we already know the results will be unsurprising.

Has that discrimination scenario ever happened?
Re:Character.ai Files for Bankruptcy by smallerize on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @10:50AM (#50072641)
I don't know if this is exactly the scenario you are thinking of, but the sections on Covid and Australia show real treatment or insurance decisions being made based on genetics. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetic_discrimination

That's not at all what was being discussed; that's DNA information collected by the government.
Re:Character.ai Files for Bankruptcy by vikramkr on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @11:15AM (#50073031)
Yeah they'll buy 23 and me data too
Re:Character.ai Files for Bankruptcy by pfdietz on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @11:32AM (#50073329)
I was asking for what had happened, not what you imagine could happen.
Re:Character.ai Files for Bankruptcy by garciasn on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @12:00PM (#50073823)
Buddy; governments move over decades and centuries, not minutes and hours. You cannot measure the effect of government action in the immediate like you want to.

The fact that the government is moving to collect these data as well as partner with third-party private industry (e.g., Palantir) to avoid direct data collection that runs counter to current/settled law, you have to begin to piece together the future.

Regardless of your apparent desire to avoid accountability for the US government's actions, potential or actual, these are truths for which the citizenry need to protect themselves against both by their own individual actions as well as the collective actions of their voting behaviors.

Re:Character.ai Files for Bankruptcy by vikramkr on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @01:34PM (#50075524)
Dude they 100% do and have lmao that's not some hypothetical. People have been tracked down with 23 and me data by the feds.
Re:Character.ai Files for Bankruptcy by pfdietz on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @05:15PM (#50078881)
I believe what you are talking about there is forensic genealogy. That doesn't track down people who are in the database, but finds people who are distantly related and then, through genealogical information, figures out who the suspect could be.

In other words, the people who put their DNA up help track down dangerous criminals. This doesn't sound like something people would object to. I certainly wouldn't.

And this is not the discrimination we were talking about, unless we have now defined the tracking down of murderers and rapists as "discrimination".

Re:Character.ai Files for Bankruptcy by Dylan16807 on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @09:06PM (#50081140)
> dangerous criminals

It's not like they're putting the evidence through a proper trial before using it to find people. A lot of them are innocent. And I'm pretty sure guilt doesn't imply dangerous either. And if they're a not-distant relative, for most crimes I probably don't want to be a big factor in them getting locked up.

Re:Character.ai Files for Bankruptcy by stickfigure on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @01:41PM (#50091718)
Thankfully, Ted Kaczynski's brother felt differently.
Re:Character.ai Files for Bankruptcy by Dylan16807 on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @04:13PM (#50094418)
Differently from what? Which part of my post are you trying to disagree with?

When I talk about some cases not being dangerous and not wanting to help with most crimes for close relatives, I'm not talking about being an active bomber.

Re:Character.ai Files for Bankruptcy by pfdietz on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @04:48PM (#50187402)
The forensic genealogical process does not itself produce evidence used in court. It's used to find a suspect, and then that suspect's DNA is compared directly against the evidential DNA collected at the crime scene.
Re:Character.ai Files for Bankruptcy by vikramkr on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @11:06PM (#50081899)
No, you don't put your DNA up with the intent of it tracking criminals, your DNA is in the system and it can be used by law enforcement, could be at a price, would hopefully be with a warrant, but or could be and has historically been done without user consent or a warrant (like was going on with GEDmatch).

And no it's not - I'm not sure why you narrowed it down so far to use cases with consent and a warrant. That's obviously not what I'm referring to at all. The initial point was about sold off to discriminate "God knows where," public private etc.

it's already legal to discriminate in life insurance based on genetic data. Here's quest diagnostics bragging about how good that division is doing at providing lab data, both real and current: https://blog.examone.com/blog/2022/12/20/50-years-of-laborat...

Genetics targeted marketing is a thing: https://www.ama.org/2020/12/16/genetic-data-and-marketing-ch...

It's a rather bold move to look at the American healthcare system, the state of privacy regulations, and the general practices of like everyone involved and decide that you don't have to worry about your DNA ending up being used for some bullshit you didn't consent to if you let some random third party put it in their database.

Are you under the impression that all current and future shady business transactions are public knowledge?
Re:Character.ai Files for Bankruptcy by pfdietz on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @10:46PM (#50098524)
Well that's an awfully convenient way to absolve yourself of any need to provide evidence.
Re:Character.ai Files for Bankruptcy by gregw2 on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @10:57AM (#50072757)
I hate to say it but fyi, don't give blood nowdays unless you read all the fine print they have an opt out policy you trust...
Re:Character.ai Files for Bankruptcy by deltoidmaximus on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @11:21AM (#50073154)
What are they doing when you give blood?
Re:Character.ai Files for Bankruptcy by gregw2 on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @01:59PM (#50075912)
They reserve the right to sequence your DNA in the fine print last time I went to give blood over a year ago.

Presumably it's for medical research but that doesn't mean it similarly gets bought/sold for another purpose, sooner or later and possibly in bankruptcy like 23andme as mentioned by the parent poster who cared enough that I figured I'd warn them about less intuitive similar risks.

I think I have started to see similar language at doctors office paperwork recently but maybe I am misremembering. If you care about not getting sequenced, you have to read the fine print nowdays.

I agree it sucks but isn't that life? Jim makes you a promise, Jim dies, his kids don't have to keep Jim's promise, nor anyone else.

My original mortgage lender has a very functioning web portal to set up autopay and check my account.

They sold my mortgage to a big bank whose web portal and app are pure garbage. Constantly crashing, the autopay frequently just doesn’t autopay, and getting a statement history requires delving through a bunch of random menus.

It’s really obnoxious that I just get no say unless I refinance.

Re:Character.ai Files for Bankruptcy by delichon on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @10:12AM (#50072095)
Imagine buying a bond that you are not allowed to sell, and just have to wait for maturity. You'd pay less than for a normal bond, right? Same goes for a mortgage lender. They would risk less and you'd be paying a lot more for such a loan, if you can find one.

This exact thing happened to me. Went from an extremely nice bill paying experience to a buggy crashing one.
