Why should someone who is almost dead care about the current and future value of their house? Why should someone who is almost dead care about what their neighborhood looks like after they're gone? There some sort of mental illness where these people think they're going to live forever.

It might be unfamiliar, but people care about their neighbours and family, and passing on a good place to others to raise their families there in future.
