Liberalism is big because it's what liberated (parts of) eastern Europe from authoritarian poverty not too long ago.
This article is using "liberals" to refer to members of the political left in America:
>The urge to “deplatform” made liberals seem weak, insofar as it implied less than total confidence in their ability to prevail on the merits. The conservative account was all about allegiance and power, but at least it didn’t really pretend otherwise.
>The decision alludes to her conflicted relationship to a clutch of attitudes that are often coded as right-wing. Like many Silicon Valley intellectuals, she thinks that figures like the voguish neoreactionary Curtis Yarvin—whose more objectionable statements she explicitly rejects—and Peter Thiel had long demonstrated a better grasp of online behavior than liberals did.
There it is.
I skimmed through the whole article rather quickly without really reading it because every paragraph had the word liberal/s embedded in it. So I am critiquing based on assumptions about what is written.
But by god are liberal or republican or whatever other politics all that really impactful to the internet ? I myself have only seen them as a minor nuisance when a subreddit mod goes crazy and starts banning shit or when a discord server adopts some LGBTQ propaganda.
I feel like the "internet", and other forms of communication and media, aren't really dominated by any particular "political" view. Maybe if you are american, browse specifallcy american news online, follow twitter and etc. But for me personally liberal or other political values look like just inertia that has build up from people reacting to them and making memes, that has finally reached me in the form of a joke.
So sincerely, i dont really care about these memed to death political views unless they are being the butt of the joke. The internet is dying to me because it is massively monopolised, by the few big tech websites, it is full of ads, people are becoming more technologically illiterate due to smartphones, and the advent of AI spam is destroying entire communities based on sharing human content with each other. There is no way to truly filter for new content, most of my browsing is heavily limited by suggestion algorithms. I cannot find out the latest rising youtube videos as a descending list that are tagged educational and egyptian in order to find out something new. Filtering, ordering and finding are massively inadequate and underdeveloped compared to feed algorithms that are designed to turn my brain off.
