I dont think people really have that many misconceptions about Catholicism. Its by and large a tool of social control to enrich some at the cost of money, using shame and (historically at least) violence to repress basic human values and characteristics. It may be the single largest racket in history and the amount of money stolen from poor and vulnerable communities is shocking.
