Transcendent experience has always been closely guarded and guided, for better or worse - there are good reasons not to throw someone into transcendence without preparing them carefully first. Just that our current situation appears to be so desperate, and the very idea of transcendence has disappeared off the cultural radar, that these drugs become necessary.
