I thought Mid Atlantic was a completely fake accent taught to radio and movie actors because of better fidelity with the recording equipment of the day

My understanding is it was a constructed accent that took "upper class" elements from US and British English.

It was also very quickly a self-reinforcing marker distinguishing one from the lower class.
